So our New England elitists had their throw-down.

Anyone interested in a possible gathering in any of the above listed cities?

Next few months are not good for me because of a new babby plus a brutal Fall semester. Personally, I'd like to see it in January or early February. That way we can all wear our most elegant scarves and plush overcoats, plus the epicness involved would likely require months of careful planning.

This may have happened before but I don't remember because I was either on a PC sabbatical or otherwise occupied/inebriated.

Just remember, the farther South we go, the more likely we'll reel in a hillbilly folk or two, and drunk hillbillies are awesome.

Discuss.

Edit - If there's a GWAR or Municipal Waste show in any of these cities that night, that place should win by default.

DC would be good.

Hillbillies are funny, though.

I'd be down for just about any of the above. The 'free drinking at my Grandpa's wine festival in October' offer that I've extended before still holds and I might potentially be up to nabbing free tickets for y'all if you tell me early enough.

I'll go anywhere. So long as it's not before January (hampered by lack of vacation time until then, as it's tied up for family crap now), I'll fly to any of those places. Although I have a preference for DC.

BWI blows balls. But I think the rest of Baltimore is ok; I haven't been there in forever so it could be different from what I remember.

Ok, back to the other posts so I can contribute something productive.

FWIW, I'm hoping we'll take a day to go to the Richmond Folk Festival the 2nd week of October. If you've never been (it started after the National Folk Festival finished its 3-year run here), it's really worth it; you can check out the info here (http://www.richmondfolkfestival.org/). (It's free and they sell beer, and there aren't may other places to try fried alligator...which really DOES taste like chicken.)

Anything out of town for me (which is anything much beyond Richmond/Petersburg) is going to have to wait until at least February, what with the new baby due in early December and all.

Oh, and we did have a small group get together here in Richmond about 2-1/2 years ago, and there was a DC thing almost 2 years ago.

I'm really biased towards Richmond just 'cause I used to live there and could actually probably find a few bars that weren't terrible.

I've been thinking things I've heard about Baltimore, mainly from people who have watched The Wire, and am going to have to eliminate it from contention.

So.. Richmond or DC? I can probably 'lead' a Richmond expedition but have no clue about DC.

Looking at possible dates, all of which are Friday/Saturday/Sunday combos..

January 28/29/30
February 3/4/5

Let's make it happen, dudes.

I figured I'd post a thread for a Boston GTG once September rolls around.

I dunno if I'd be able to make it down for a DC gtg, as much as I'd love to. Kind of a long ways for me!

ETA: I'm going to try to get back to the PNW for Thanksgiving or Christmas this year.. I'll be about 30 minutes north of Seattle if there are any people in that area who want to try to plan for a little gathering. Probably won't be huge or epic since it's the holidays but then the West coast won't be entirely left out of the lurve.

Considering that I currently live in Richmond, I can probably be of more help if it's held down here. And then don't have to travel. (And no, my house is NOT open to folks, it's cramped enough here already.) I haven't done the bar scene in a long while, but I know people who do, so can get some good recommendations.

I'm also putting in a personal vote for February 3/4/5 'cause that's my birthday weekend.

Does 821 Cafe still have $1 High-Life/PBR?

And do you know if Avalon on Main St still open?

You can count me as a "likely" since it's in Richmond. That's just still a hard timeframe for me to make promises around.

Unless someone promises to buy me lots and lots and lots of drinks for my birthday. Then I'll move heaven and hell to be a definite.

I live just outside of DC, in Maryland. I lived in DC for about a year, and while I don't drink (I'd much rather smoke pot) I can say that Adam's Morgan seemed like a decent place to crawl at, either that or somewhere in the Dupont Circle area.

That'd be my sugguestion anyway, but I'm open to just about anything, since as I said, I don't really drink.

EDIT: As for time of year/dates, I don't really care. Pretty much if I don't have to work the next day, I'd be in.

NocturnalRob
09-02-2010, 05:54 PM
I will have to respectfully disagree about Adam's Morgan unless you plan on leaving before midnight. It's a complete shithole.

Georgetown is full of college kids, and should be avoided unless that's your scene.

Ceyrin's right though. Dupont can be fun. Big Hunt is always a good place to start. Decent draft selection.

I quite fine with your disagreeing, since as I said before I don't really drink and thus wouldn't really know. I was just quoting off some random areas where I saw several bars when I lived in DC.

One thing I do know about DC though, is that the bars close really early, I think it's like midnight or 1am, even on weekends - even earlier during the week.

I seem to remember this bar that's also a book store. That place was cool, if a bit crowded every time I went there.

I'm really digging that February 3/4/5 range I mentioned earlier. One night is fine with me, but if anyone wants to take this to a mini-bender level, I'm game.

I don't really know what you mean by I-95 providing... but I can say this...

Part of good self-care for me was to not go looking when I moved away from where I was before. Basically, I'd spend all my disposable income on marijuana if given the chance several years ago.

These days, I generally limit it to once a year, and that time is never when it's cold (I hate being stoned and cold). What I get comes from further north, and is generally not the sort of bullshit you describe, but I also don't get it anywhere even remotely local. I go on a roadtrip for it.

From my experience, the closer you live to I-95, the sticky icky is better quality and more readily available.

As far as smoking, once a year may be right on for me too. Shit, probably less than that. Glad to hear someone else kicked that "Well, I have $100 that could pay a bill or provide some food for myself, but dude a few blocks over just got some killer shit that comes in VIALS not bags!" habit. While fun, it was incredibly stupid.

Anyway back on topic.

YAY DC!!!!
