View Full Version : Best money I ever spent...

was on some furniture "insurance" for our leather couch. I spent $190 bucks on it 5 years ago that covers anything wrong with it from manufacturers defects to a kid spilling a pitcher of milk all over it.

One of the handles of the corner recliners broke so we called and Macy's came out and attempted to fix it. They couldn't find the part, so today, they are replacing the entire couch for free.

Stupid for them (it was a plastic handle that attached to a metal cord that could easily be fixed... the technician was simply too lazy to work that day) but fantastic for me. Needless to say, I purchased the same type of insurance on the new one.

Perfect.

Normally I'm against any type of insurance offered by retailers, they make a shitton of money off them. The all inclusive insurance stuff from furniture retailers is pretty awesome though..

Same here. I will tell the cashier "NO THANK YOU" even before they finish their spiel regarding insurance for this and that.. but this furniture insurance was so cheap compared to the cost of the furniture that I was like "And you cover anything?? Tack it on"

I typically avoid the insurance plans, too -- I used to try to sell them when I worked in computer field service, because I made an assload of money on commissions from them.

That said, I bought "Goof Proof (http://www.mybobs.com/goofproof/default.aspx)" for a set of leather couches I bought because I have kids and pets, and it's basically a no-questions-asked replacement policy for five years. A year later, my cat shredded the shit out of it and the company (which New Englanders will know the name of) replaced the entire thing for me.

You bought your furniture at Macy's. Try buying quality furniture, which nullifies the need for furniture insurance.

1) Cats shouldn't cost anything, because you never truly own them and therefore are never truly responsible for them. They are soulsucking demons, and no money should be spent on them.
2) Sorry to burst your bubble, but you didn't spend $4000 on any single piece of furniture at Macy's. That's a fact. Maybe on the entire set. Especially since you reference "one of the corner recliners." Furniture bragging rights revoked.
3) Macy's sucks.
4) Furniture insurance is a scam.

Bobs is great for that sort of stuff. Cheap, decent enough furniture that if you destroy you can get replaced. I just wish he wasn't so fucking annoying, if I ever see him, I'm going to punch him in the nuts, and then say "thanks for the couch".

I always say fuck you to the insurance at the check out except on the following in the past:

1)Our leather couches just as PB did. Paid for itself several times over at a mere cost of like $150 at purchase.

2)Flight sticks. Was like $30 but if you play a lot with those they get fucked up faster than you know. I've had about 8 replaced over my years of gaming and it only cost me $30!!!

3) Surround sound / stereo systems. Nothing like blowing the receiver and be fucking fucked. Worth the extra bucks. Had several speakers replaced a few times and the receiver all for like $70. And they bring the shit to your house and do it for you. Bravo.

I don't see the need in putting down someone else's furniture. This is ridiculous. It's not like he bought a countertop microwave and metal brackets and tried to pass it off as an above the range. It's probably servicing it's purpose just fine and, chances are, if you ever came to his house, you'd never have known.

I bought what I consider to be a decent couch off craigslist when I bought my place. It had minimal use, looked nice, and was comfortable. I have two dogs who like to get their hair all over furniture. Something tells me I'm honestly just as happy with my couch, that I've spent less on, than other people who have spent a ton on a piece of furniture. It looks nice too and I get compliments on it frequently.

So:

1.) Cats are great pets.
2.) Spend whatever you want on the furniture you want. No one really should give a shit.
3.) Macy's is good if it's selling the furniture you want.
4.) Furniture insurance worked out great for you. Smart investment, especially for the price, considering your pets and kids.

1) Cats are fucking awful.
2) I don't give a shit until someone comes in here talking about how they made out because they bought furniture insurance (see #4) when they could have just bought decent furniture to begin with. Plastic handles? Really?
3) No.
4) Furniture insurance is a scam.

edit: PB, I'm glad that it worked out for you. I've had my couch for over 4 years and since I barely use it, I'll probably have it for a long-ass time. I don't have kids, dogs, and demonspawn fucking my shit up. So...money saved, etc etc. Kudos.

What the fuck are you talking about? The list wasn't to show you I have other expenses.. the list was to show you why I wouldn't purchase an expensive piece of furniture you sit on.

2) Sorry to burst your bubble, but you didn't spend $4000 on any single piece of furniture at Macy's. That's a fact. Maybe on the entire set. Especially since you reference "one of the corner recliners." Furniture bragging rights revoked.

You might want to check your facts.

It's a leather sectional.. which means it comes in pieces and then is assembled in my house. I'm not bragging, I'm merely stating that 4K is enough to spend on that type of furniture. Also, the corner recliner was on my last sofa that was replaced.

You might have difficulty in believing this.. but here is the couch we purchased in chocolate brown:

http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=441065&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

You can see that this is over $4,000.

Now I'm sure you still don't believe me, so here is a picture of it so far.. we had to return the end chaise because it had a cut in the leather, but you can tell there is a piece missing because there is no armrest:

Being forced to repeat a few grades doesn't mean that your 14th - 17th year in school is the same as "college".

My wife skips department stores for furniture unless it has Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn stamped on the door.

Real men don't argue or fret over furniture. Real men just use furniture and order the wife to fix it when it breaks. If it is not comfortable then wife is corrected - sometimes by removing the tongue.

I don't know enough about cabinets to name some high end cabinet maker and claim that I got mine from there. But those Elle models? Yeah, in my bed? The girl ones? They know. I'll ask them when I get home. I just know I spent over $4000 a piece, even on hardware.

We purchased this house in March of '09.. the cabinets were in the house when we renovated it. We simply painted them.

I kinda liked them before. Just a personal preference. I can see how they wouldn't match with darker floors.

When you painted them, did you just sand them down and throw a coat on them? I ask because I might be doing that to mine this winter. I might just throw on some new hardware though to match our new appliances, haven't really decided yet.

I had planned on slowly changing out the appliances. I figured the fridge was the youngest and least likely to go soon, so I started with the microwave and the stove two months ago. I was looking into getting a dishwasher this week and then last night, the fridge stopped working ... so my slow timeline went by a lot faster than I had planned. Luckily my place is pretty small, so the fridge was a decent price.

We lightly sanded them, just to scuff the clear coat up. The key to doing it is to go to Sherman Williams and telling them exactly what you are doing. I brought in a small drawer face to show them what color it was and that I was going to paint it white. He then mixed up some primer that was a yellow color.. which is supposed to be some "opposite color" so that it wouldn't bleed through the white. Could have been bullshit, but it only took 2 light coats of white to completely cover it.

I suggest renting a professional spray painter from somewhere like Home Depot... it makes a world of difference and made it easy as hell. I was able to plastic off half of my garage, take off all the doors and paint them for 3 days in my garage.

I actually liked the natural wood color better, but the white does go much better with the dark floors.
