View Full Version : General Rogue questions
Hello Rogueish types.
I had some assorted skills and training related questions I was hoping you might be able to help me with so I can get my Rogue back to old days form, or at least suitably fun and neat.
What sort of initial stats would work out best for an Elf Rogue, in your opinion?
With the current set of skills and all that, how magical of a Rogue can you really get and stay in the effective category? I'm really not thinking of going the drastic route or anything, so what do you think is the best bang for your buck as it were?
Next, what do you find to be the best combination of lockpick training skills? From what I recall when I last Rogued, I had tripled in the relevant skills and was able to pick boxes from creatures well above my level.
Third, how much training in Ambush, CM, and Dodging should one get to, again, get the most effective combination from them?
Lastly, what sort of armor would you recommend? Before I know I used some Chain Hauberk, but there weren't all manner of fancy combat maneuvers that it'd hinder (especially if undertrained for - it was always easy to shave off the extra RT and all).
Thanks for any input!

A very cookie cutter rogue build is something like: 1x armor, 1x CMAN, 1x PF, 2x dodge, 2x weapon, 1x shield if you're sword and board, 2x picking/disarm, 2x perception, 2x ambush, 2x stalk/hide. 20 ranks of arcane symbols/ magic item use is a good early target. You'll want more eventually though. This will also probably leave some points to play with.
If picking above your level is important to you, going with ranged weapons will allow you plenty of points to 3x picking/disarm. 2x picking/disarm will allow you to get the majority of your own boxes though.
If you don't want to cast spells while hunting, I'm a fan of metal breast plate. Though with some of the recent cman's and armor specializations I can certainly see the argument for staying in lighter armor. Brigandine would probably be the minimum for me, but I've heard of some people staying in even lighter. It's really going to come down to your play style and personal preference.
There is no wrong way to rogue. Try things out, see what you like.
And as far as stats go, take the time to use Tsorans stat spreadsheet. And find a combination that you're happy with. If you think you're going to play this character for a long time, placing stats to allow for plenty of growth is usually a good plan.

Endlin said it pretty well, there is no wrong way to train a rogue. When people ask me about a rogue, I say, well, if you're picking, decide if you're 2x or 3x, with or without lore. If you aren't, 2x everything you can. if you can't 2x it, 1x it.
As for stat placement, I google GSIV STAT CRUNCHER and it pops up with a site that will maximize your stats for cap, or show you the TPs you'd gain with a certain stat set.
As for armor, in Prime, I still swear by my MBP, (Hauberk is crap unless you're planning to cast in it.) Both are 80 ranks to use with min penalties. Prior to that, I'd suggest getting into brig ASAP, and potentially holding off there until you're ready for MBP.
Oh, and download and use grguild. It's awesome. (Shameless plug, check the thread in this folder for more info.)

Ummm, I know I'm probably off the boat here, but Ausek ran around in robes when he hunted...though he was a sniper. Shadow Mastery, Armored Stealth, Evasion Mastery, and Vanish. If he ever fell out of hiding, which was nearly never, he would vanish immediately and be fine. Over hunted just fine that way too.

I'm pretty sure I agreed this is also viable. In so many words.
I will throw in though that in MBP, I die less often than a friend of mine who wears brig. Who is significantly more post cap than I am. Sure he stays hidden better, no denying that. But when he gets hit, he dies. I usually walk away. Not to metion the CVA advantage.

I hate agreeing with Endlin. Someone start a new thread or something. As I moved further into the post-cap realm, hiding (although the ranks are still there) started to get phased out. If I can save 2-3 seconds and still kill in one swing, I'm going to. (and you can.)

First of all, thanks for the replies!

That's good to know. How would 2x combined with 403/404 work out comparatively?

Heh, that's one of the things. I always liked how flexible Rogues were. I used to know tons about skills and everything but I don't anymore so it's a very different perspective, which I'm hoping to change.

Ok, thanks for that mention. That seems to give some ideas quick and effectively. I'll also check out grguild as it looks like it may be efficient.

Which type of football?

Hockey > football, no matter which type.

Lores are pretty much required if you're only 2xing. Right around the 55-60 level you will notice a BIG jump in locks/traps and you will no longer be able to pick the majority of your boxes...atleast that's what I found. No matter what I hunted when I was ranged/404/2x picking I was unable to pick the majority of my boxes in from Tomb Trolls and Blighted Forest.
