Does anyone know the earth lore requirements to get the different hardness levels (i.e. thin, thick, hard etc...)? Also does anyone have a rough idea of the benefit conferred at these levels?

Trying to decide if I should get a small amount of earth lore to get one or two extra hardness levels before pushing towards 1x CM with my war mage.
The AS per TP benefits would be roughly comparable. Pros are increased unencumbered carrying capacity and whatever extra protection I can get from stone skin. The con is less CMan points. I have 3 ranks of feint, and with a 1 second RT it's already very effective. Not sure that the fourth rank is a huge priority for me yet. I'm only 6 ranks of CM behind level right now, and would be able to hit 1x by abount 40 or 50 depending how much earth lore I get.

Never really got into earth lore much. I considered Stone skin decent protection, but not really important enough to upgrade it with Lores. But thats just my opinion.

I don't think it would be worth it right now, but that's just speaking anecdotally having tried a heavy earth lore build a couple times for giggles.

Now after the elemental lore review roles out and heavy earth lore will get you some other tasty defensive benefits, it might be worth it. I'm planning on going that route.

Hmm.. well if its under review probably definately not worth getting considering that everytime I've seen things get 'reviewed' it tends to get nerfed...

You can always get the hardest level, even without lore, just cast it again and again until you do. The extra lore just makes it more likely. It does something else to it too (like it can take more damage before crumbling). But the actual hardness level (which I believe translates into how much damage it'll absorb in a given hit), doesn't require the lore.

1) that's just silly

2) i doubt very, very seriously if fucking stone skin has ever come up during a "we need to nerf this next" conversation

3) i meant the greater benefits of earth lore in general, in addition to stoneskin, which will be included with the e-lore review (RSN)

lots of defensive benefits from EL:E planned.

Oh well excuse me for talking about my experiences in the age of nerfing. One of the GM's even said awhile back that when things get 'reviewed' it tends to get nerfed. And from personal experience they never make anything better through review they just make things worse. Take the Wizard and Major Elemental spell circles, might be just my opinion, but when they reviewed those a few years back it did make them worse.

doesnt earth lore give you a + to str and AS when u cast 509?

i believe it's just AS. From when I recall when I was fooling around with E-Lore it didn't make any difference on my encumbrance, which made me sad. This was at level 35ish, fully doubled since I was playing around with stone fist and you need to basically be doubled to use pound.

But the benefit is pretty minuscule for AS, in terms of points invested. It's something like an extra 15 AS if you have 200 ranks.

Yep. the lores only do give you a bonus on AS. However, the 509 does help with encumberance, but that does not go up with training in lores.

Thanks for the responses everyone. One more thing... can anyone give me some insight into the mechanics of how stone skin reduces damage? Can it reduce the crit rank that would've otherwise occured? Or does it just soak up damage like damage padding?

Crit rank reduction: No
Damage padding: Yes

Raw damage + Crit damage = Total damage
Total damage - Stone Skin absorption = Actual damage taken

So it doesn't reduce the severity or likelihood of stuns? That's somewhat disappointing.
