I have a habit of buying pens. I’m fascinated with all the different kinds there are. My favorites to actually use are black .7 gel pens.

I’ve never really explored the fountain pen arena but I picked up this thing and I love it. It is so nice to write with I find myself just writing random phrases just because it writes so beautifully.

So what is your favorite writing implement?

I actually picked up the G2 Limited and it was great until the ball broke and it started leaking. Very disappointed.

I don't write enough on paper to give a fuck what I'm using at any particular time but I typically keep a cheap mechanical pencil on me when I will be writing.

I have a Bic pen with a rubber band wrapped a couple of times around it. Comfort-Grip, bitch.

I keep some generic pens on my desk and have a couple mechanicals for note taking, like Bob I don't generally write enough to care.

That said I love the classic Bic pen. Not so much as a writing implement, but for the utility. Instant plastic tube. You never know when you're going to need it, I have a fondness for this pen because we would turn them into spitball tubes and see where you could get them to stick. The chalkboard while the teacher was writing was a classic... my 'best' was getting a yellow spitball to stick on the white ceiling of the bus, and having it stay there for multiple years.

Quick ViewZebra® F-301 Stainless Steel Retractable Ballpoint Pen, 0.7 mm, Fine Point, Stainless Steel Barrel, Black Ink

Not an expensive pen guy....

This particular pen is useful for military service-people, as the retractable clicker is exactly a 1/4 of an inch wide. If preparing for an inspection, you can check ribbons/metals length from pockets with this pen.

Most people think “a pen is just a pen”, you pick it up, take off the cap and write. For me a pen is more than that. I need it to write clearly, not smudge, have a stable ink flow and if possible have a rubber comfort grip. Price really isn’t a factor for me because I would rather pay a little bit more and have a quality pen than to skimp and get something that writes like crap. When I first saw the Pentel EnerGel I knew that I had to try it out – the cool metallic finish with black accents made it stand out from the rest of the pens on display and since it was a Pentel, I knew that there was a very good chance it would far exceed my expectations. Having had this pen for several months I can say that it is amongst my favorite in the gel ink variety but you’ll have to keep reading to find out why. Yes, I am a pen junkie and I’m not afraid to admit it.

Features

When you first see this pen you might think that it is made of metal rather than plastic. The sleek and sharp looking design of the barrel and cap give this pen a definite visual edge over other gel pens. The metal clip that is attached to the cap is extremely sturdy and so far none of mine have broken off or bent. The comfort grip on the base of the pen will allow you to write for extended periods of time without hand cramps or aches. The pens are available in black, red or blue ink in a .5 or .7 mm tip. This section is for the single .7 mm black gel pen however they are sold in combination packs [1 each black, blue and red] or by the dozen [single color]. The ink flow is perfect almost every single time you pick this up and write with it. For the most part the ink dries almost instantly however there are some papers, like Post-It Notes, that will take a little longer for the ink to dry.

Since the ink is force fed to the tip using the clear gel inside the chamber, you can write with this pen on a flat or sloped surface as well upside down. I found this really useful when I had to climb under the sink and write down the model numbers and information about the garbage disposal when it started giving me trouble. Since space was a little cramped, I had a small piece of paper that I had to hold with one hand on the top of the inside of the cabinet while writing with the other. If I would have tried that with a regular pen I doubt I would have gotten the same steady ink flow. While I doubt this will be something that will happen often it is nice to know that the pen will work even under the most bizarre of circumstances.

If I had to name one bad think about the pen it would have to be that there is no real way to get an accurate reading of the amount of ink that is left. There is a small clear window on the body of the pen but it doesn’t display the ink but rather the clear gel. The .7 mm black EnerGel has been going for a few months now, using it almost every single day, and is still writing perfectly but without some type of gauge, it is hard to tell when it will need to be replaced. After I purchased the single one I stocked up on the other colors and picked up a few of the .5 mm ones to try them out so I know I won’t get stuck when this one dies on me. One important thing to know is that this is not refillable so if you are looking for a pen that is, look elsewhere.

Price

These can be purchased for about $1.50 individually, double packs for about $2.19 and by the dozen. I highly suggest that you try them out individually so you can see which one will work best for you. I found the best prices on these at Wal-Mart as well as Office Depot. Both places offer them in single or double packs, the three count mix [one of each color] and Office Depot sells them by the dozen. If you find that you really like the Pentel EnerGel buying them by the dozen is the best value however the dozen packs are only available in single color lots [one dozen black, one dozen red or one dozen blue]. For the money these are great gel pens that give you months of writing, even if you use it every day for extended periods of time.

Overall Ease of Use

The rubber comfort grip on the pen barrel is a definite perk and will help to eliminate cramping and aches associated with taking notes or writing letters. The ink is also acid free so it can be used for scrapbooking or crafts without having to worry about the ink damaging the paper. The cap snaps back into place with a nice click and stays put. You won’t have to worry about it coming lose and leaking everywhere and the clip on the cap makes it easy to carry it around in knapsacks, purses or pockets.

The Bottom Line

So far the .7 mm size seems to be the best for everyday use, note taking, letter writing and addressing envelopes. The others that I have purchased are equally impressive but I have a real love for black ink, especially when it flows out effortlessly, doesn’t clump or spit and dries almost instantly. If you are looking for a solid pen that will deliver a steady ink supply flow under various conditions, I highly suggest checking out the Pentel EnerGel. Even if you don’t really care for other gel type pens, this one is a cut above the common ordinary gel pens that are usually found in the cute neon colors and stop writing after a few weeks.

It takes me half an hour to pick a good pen, but recently I just found these felt tip pens from Sharpie, and they're awesome. They write boldly, and the ink doesn't appear strong on the back of the page or bleed through paper.

I like a nice good pen. Especially since this semester I'm taking a creative writing course, and I like to have something comfortable to write with seeing as I get hand cramps every damn 5 minutes.

Feel the difference! EnerGel® Alloy RT features our precise advanced blend of super-smooth liquid and gel inks. The vivid, quick-drying ink is perfect for lefties and the sleek, balanced alloy barrel is ideal for maximum writing performance. It's distinctive, textured grip area provides extended comfort while you write. This strong gel roller is equipped with a metal tip and produces medium 0.7mm lines. Retractable and refillable with Pentel LR7 refill, this pen is exquisite.

I have one of these at the moment and its not bad. Not as sturdy as it looks but writes very well.

I may not be able to use them much any more, but I still love fountain pens. Though I typically need them to be fine point, with quick drying ink, since I'm a lefty.

This is one of my favorites; I bought it in red while I was in Spain 12 years ago:

Pilot Vanishing Point Fountain Pen (the company was Namiki when I bought the pen)

The Levenger bottled ink (http://www.levenger.com/PAGETEMPLATES/PRODUCT/Product.asp?Params=category=8-221|level=2-3|pageid=787) is my favorite. I like the bottle shape for refilling my pens, and the ink quality is beyond fantastic.

I also like the Waterman bottled ink (http://www.montgomerypens.com/product_detail.asp?product_id=4150) 'cause of the bottle design that lets you tilt the bottle to help get the ink from the bottom.

For general, I-need-an-inexpensive-ballpoint-pen writing, my favorite is the Parker Penman, medium point, in blue.

(Yes, I, too, am a pen geek.)

A. I used to be a big fan of the Uni-ball Signo 207 Premier. Very smooth writing, great silicone boob gel grip, but the tips kept breaking so I stopped buying them altogether.

B. I tried the 207 Jet Stream Premier. Its only mediocre for what is advertised as a “premier” pen. Not so crazy about the design. Too light weight.

C. The plain old Signo 207 is the best deal. Great writing, very sturdy, looks good for the price point.

They have a quite a few more that I still need to try.

A. Zebra Z Grip Max Gel is one of my work pens. Built solid, writes smooth, very black, no deterioration of the casing with daily use, black and silver, simple stylish design. Great for check writing.

B. My inventory/payroll pen/pencil is the Uni-ball Signo MF2. Rotate the pocket clip to switch from mechanical pencil to fine point black pen. Lost the eraser cap straight away but its more for function. Perfect pairing for writing in small spaces.

I absolutely love these, but I only buy them in black. They're comfortable to write with, because I tend to grip whatever i'm using really tightly (i'll forever have a small callus because of that), and they're kinda soft where I hold them.

However this semester i've been using a lot of mechanical Bic pencils.

For Procedures... These are nice because if you forget to click it and slide it in your pocket, the clip unlatches and retracts the tip. They also seem to disappear faster than any of the other pens in the office.

Currently using a Zebra F-301. Really sleek design. Super tight construction. Nice black and brushed steel look. The ball point is fine like a used pencil. It writes smooth but the feel is tighter than gel. Been keeping it in the breast pocket nerd style.

Just bought the Zebra F-701. I like all of Zebra's products and definitely like this. It has an old Exacto Blade feel to it. It writes smooth and thin. The ink could be a little darker. Solid construction. Nothing unscrews on this pen. Thats a huge drawback. If you need to replace the ink you have to throw this really nice pen out. Unless I am missing a way to replace the ink.

You will revert back to elementary school cursive when this gets into your hands. It distributes ink in a similar manner as the feather quill yet does not require dipping into an inkwell! No more grinding tar, pitch, burnt bones, and animal blood... Bic has already done that for you and placed it neatly into this implement without you having to get your hands dirty.

We've come a long way from wiping our mud on walls. I would encourage everyone to embrace those advances and enjoy clean hands.

I work in the NYC courts, both in the Supreme Court in NY (Supreme is actually the trial level court in NY) and in the EOIR courts of the 2nd circuit. almost every court I've worked in has preferred blue ink when signing things. I don't think there's a strict legal requirement, and it's definitely outdated as fraud protection, but I believe the tradition stemmed from that - to prove a signature was authentic and not a copy.

Okay I figured a legal system of some kind but did not want to assume. I don't know why but that's still interesting to me. Traditionalisms! I did rake my brain for instances when I've been required to use blue ink to sign something. Once in my life on my original DD 214 (that never sees open air these days because they are hell to replace.) I'm sure it's a local jurisdictional thing. I was a social worker in Buffalo before law school, and any NY State stuff we filled out we did it in blue ink. I'm not sure if it was required (and it certainly isn't mandatory in the courts) but I think one of the Rockefellers must have disputed a contract signed in black or something once upon a time.

The IRS lost my tax return last year and had me resend it and that I was allowed to use a copy as long as I signed in blue so they could tell the signature was original.

I am not really sure why, but writing in blue ink always makes me feel better about my day. It is probably leftover damage from when people used to be much harder on my anus in terms of substance abuse.

Sorry to disappoint, but the list of things that have entered my anus is a short one. It only includes a medical apparatus they raped me with in the ER, and slut-tongues from my enjoyable and intoxicated youth.

The IRS functions on a level of government bureacracy that believes if you take the effort to get it color-photocopied, you should get away with it.

It's almost like those perfect murders, where you respect the murderer's foresight in killing a total scumbag and then vanishing. You kind of wish you didn't have to catch him.

It drives me nuts that the state of California requires black ink on their employment verification forms for state disability insurance (their state SDI is better than our company short term disability policy, ESPECIALLY for our non-management staff). I'm always using blue ink, because a lot of times my blue signature is the only indication I'm sending an original letter, and my black pens don't feel as comfortable in my hand.

I need to find that disposable fountain pen.

I like the G2-07 for everyday writing.

I came here to talk about pens... and apparently people are now talking about hotdog stands after 9 pages.

I've always found the G2-07 is probably one of the best pens. Very consistent lines, doesn't clog that much. While I'm not a big fan of .7 pens or graphite for pencils, I found that the G2-05 would clog much more easily, thus being more burdensome than a slightly less fine line... ... I worked at an office supply store throughout high school, and had far too much time on my hands.

& lol at the tags for this thread.

I own one of those vanishing point pilot fountain pens. I think it's clever, my only complaint is the reservoir for ink seems a tad small---or perhaps I'm really mean grading papers. I go through some red ink. Mine is the same style/color as the one posted. Pretty neat a fountain pen with a click-top.---doesn't improve my handwriting a lick tho.

I may not be able to use them much any more, but I still love fountain pens. Though I typically need them to be fine point, with quick drying ink, since I'm a lefty.

This is one of my favorites; I bought it in red while I was in Spain 12 years ago:

Lamy Safari

This is another of my favorites; gotta love how the tip retracts! (I have it in blue.)

We were talking about those earlier. Great dependable pens. The only odd thing about them is the weird orangeness at the end of the ink thingy.

Kastrel
02-25-2013, 08:30 PM
Yeah. They smear a little if you put your hand on fresh ink, and they don't like to write on certain materials, but otherwise, they make thick and bold lines and I find them very reliable.
