So our local paper posts people's mugshots on their website and in the paper. They also list their real name, their age, and their address. Look at these three and tell me what you think. Especially the first one....

Lots of cities have papers/websites like that.
We have one called the The Slammer.

Our area has two of them. Jailbirds, and Busted! I like to read them because theyre hilarious, but at the same time, its sad that my area has that much crime, since I live in a really small town.

It's pretty shitty to do on someone being charged for something, vs being convicted. That second girl is going to have her (legitimate) business hurt by this (maybe that's a good thing).

It's no worse than what the regular news (take your pick) carries.

I'm pretty sure no wants to be arrested, especially for prostitution. I remember how embarrassed I was when I was arrested when my name was the paper and can't imagine how much it would blow for something like this.

When I lived in KY, the jail website was frequented so much that it was causing a network slowdown at the company where I worked, and they blocked it. The website did real time updates of people's arrests, so the "fun" thing to do on a Monday morning was to check to see who got arrested over the weekend for DUI or public intoxication, then post the mugshot at their cubicle.

Yeah I don't see how they can do it for a charge, that is kind of like slander or whatever isn't it?

She hooks up with the baby's daddy in another room while the baby sleeps. Gets paid for both jobs.
Wouldn't posting her address like that count as advertisement?

What farmer said. Being charged with something doesn't mean that you're guilty of doing it, it just puts that thought into everyone's head.

Yeah I was amazed when I found out about the busted hookers. Then I was a little upset. I wish I'd known such services existed in the area.
On the plus side, I didn't, and so now I don't have herpes, and haven't been arrested.

^This.
At the very least it taints the jury pool and could prevent a fair trial. At worst it presents an opportunity for libel if the person is not convicted and they can proove that they were adversely affected by the publicity.
I would not think the benefit to the local paper would be worth the potential risk.

I never understood the disparity between not posting alleged victim names, but still posting potential suspect names.

If it was easy to win a case for libel/adverse publicity, it wouldn't happen all over the country in papers, the internet and TV.
As for tainting the jury, there's no extra information published that a juror wouldn't have for a trial. Unless the person arrested was some sort of famous person (and in that case the jury would be most likely tainted anyway due to the publicity that comes with being famous) I doubt it's a concern for the average joe.

You really don't see the difference between an alleged victim and someone accused of a crime?

Either mention them both or not at all. I prefer that neither of them be named until there's a final verdict.
If the suspect is found innocent, their life is still screwed because their name was exposed, meanwhile the victim gets away with the slander the accusation caused.

I remember something from some long time ago about why this information was published in the first place, but forget the specifics (I think it was to either prevent people from getting arrested for no reason, or to let people know why so and so was missing). Now there is more of a stigma on being arrested where the public views it as being the same as being guilty. Either way in our current society I don't think it's necessary to publish arrests in this fashion, I'm fine with publishing convictions, but it just seems too potentially damaging.

And if they truly were a victim? Then what? They just suck up getting their name dragged through the news?
I'd rather not have it be public knowledge that I got ass raped in an Irish Pub.
Thanks.

Yeah I wouldn't agree with going as far as to "publish them both.." but I certainly agree with the "publish none". Publish the names of convicted criminals all you want, but allegations getting published don't help anyone, and it's only done because people love gossip and love to read that stuff.

What if some drunk dude accused you of ass raping them in the same Irish Pub? Now fast forward 6 months, long after the case was dropped or went to trial, and your new potential employer googles your name and sees you were accused of ass raping.
I believe there are a couple places in the US where people post on billboards the names of alleged solicitors of prostitutes.
Its not that far fetched. Consider William Kennedy Smith, the Duke Lacrosse team, etc...
If you're found guilty, spread your name over kingdom come for all I care. If we truly believe in innocent until proven guilty, we should treat those accused with the same respect we treat alleged victims.

I don't recall seeing arrests printed when I live in WA, at least not name and address, it was more of a non-specific "a white 22 year old male was arrested in south Everett because of being a douchetard".
When I moved to CT I was pretty shocked to see they printed all of the information. I definitely think the only time specific information should be printed is when the person is convicted.

Wow... I need to move to WA if they're arresting people for being douchetards I'm going to go to see if I can join the force.

So just for kicks, I started to google the address of these whores to see exactly how close they are to my house, and low and behold, after typing just "61" their address was the second recommendation. Free advertising achieved.
