...looks pretty badass. No tile-stacking, no religion, ranged combat, HEXAGONAL TILES, city-states, etc.
September 21st.
Hopefully they get cracking on some badass Fantasy mods ala Fall From Heaven quickly.

Day 1. I love Civ even though I suck at it (I can't do diplomacy and Civ IV's espionage made me want to cry) I just like the idea of exploration and defending territory.
I will warn you Makkah, that there's been quite a bit of talk about how Mods may not be as easy as they once were and many modders have discussed boycotting the game due to them only being downloadable through a forced Steamworks install (even for single player).
Check the Fanatics forums for more info:

That sucks; a few interviews I've read said modding will be EASIER...

Yes, easier for sure. The mods will be availiable through a centralized portal, as opposed to the myriad of fansites. Only mods really ready for prime time will be allowed for download too, so no half finished game breaking ones. Easier editing and also the import of previous mods for CIV 4 should be a snap. But only if you are willing to submit your mod to Steam for QC and basically give your IP to them to distribute as they see fit. That's what the modders are against.
Personally I'm a fan of the core game with altered rulesets for enhanced realism in particular circumstances not necessarily full on mods, as long as those are allowed I'll be cool, but I definitely feel for the modders, they are already doing this work for free, to then have someone else make money (through advertising and such on Steam, the mods will still be free to download) off of their hard work will be hard to swallow.

Would be a shame to see no new Fall From Heaven or Warhammer mods...

I was just playing Civ IV the other day wondering when this would be coming out. Awesome.

I'm looking to buy this, but I'll probably need a new computer in the future.
With this Steam install, would I have to buy a new copy of Civ V to play on a new computer?

Steam allows you to keep a digital copy where ever you can hook up to the internet. I use it at work and at home all the time.

Oh alright. From what I read in some of the reviews, people were bitching about Steam. Why is that then?

I've only had a problem with it when I've not had internet. I think because it hurts efforts at piracy.

If I bought all my games I would love nothing more than Steam. I do have a handful of Steam games but I pirated Civ 5, and I'm probably the worst player ever. I am having fun crushing the shit out of everyone around me since they are just getting riflemen and I stacked science enough to already have nuclear missiles and shit.
I'll wait for it to go on sale, as it will inevitably do.
Steam owns for that.

Loving Civ5 so far. The changes are overall very positive. Combat is way better. The battle analysis is much more accurate than it used to be (I havent seen any upsets yet). Definitely worth the try.
