The forum is hosted where the php memory limit is set to 8MB. It constantly runs out of memory searching. So someone needs to change the memory limit.

I've never really had any issues tracking down posts, and it's a free community so I don't expect Kranar to go all out on the hosting provider and updating the search (although I'm sure if someone tracked down a vBulletin update/mod that would improve things and just pointed it out, he'd install it, he did that for tables pretty quickly).

There is nothing wrong with VB other than the version we are using is very out of date.

The fact it is a free forum doesn't mean you can't find a reliable host who can handle the content and allow users to change their PHP memory size.

There is no plugin in Vbulletin that circumvents the PHP memory size portion.

Anyways this was discussed at length before and the suggestions that were made were received with lukewarm reception at the time so I have no desire to rehash those.

The reality is that there are people, myself included, who have run larger, way more complicated communities, for free. The amount this forum costs in total is probably much less than what most believe it is.

The fix for things like search and maintenance to VB should be trivial. But than again so is doing something about spammers like IW, yet that hasn't happened either.

Besides, Kranar knows how much I dislike the way the technical aspects of this forum are being handled. We have chatted about it in the past and we simply have agreed to disagree. I wish when I handed the forum over to Caels I was more specific in which they would be handed down in the future, or in which they were maintained technically. I did not, and so I can't go back and change that.

But it should be enough to say that this place was the first community I started, and up until a year ago it remained on my resume as a technical achievement in forum building. I removed it because of the a fore mentioned technical disagreements.

The memory errors (which I actually have never encountered when I'm looking for threads, I either have something specific I know a single word to find it and use the built in one, or I have a more generic couple of words and know that search does not respect quotes, this isn't broken).

Search is broken, and the fix is easy. Up the memory available to PHP from an archaic 8mb to something like 32mb.

It is not limited, limited search within Vbulletin is something you can turn on which would say "Too many results please refine your search". You don't get that. You get a php memory error which is being throw by apache.

The bottom line is that a replicable issue is a bug. This is totally replicable on many fronts and there is a very easy solution.

The forum is hosted where the php memory limit is set to 8MB. It constantly runs out of memory searching. So someone needs to change the memory limit.

I wasnt saying I sit around all day trying to break the thing or even use it very often but sometimes reasonable searchs give the not enough memory exception randomly when I am actually trying to look something up. Searching a corpus of text with a million posts depending on how its written your search criteria might not even effect the error it could come down to something as weird as the size of the text in the results or the size of the posts its trying to sort by relevence. I have no idea how its written but I doubt the error is because the people trying to look things up are purposely typing vague phases. I would not be suprised if the memory error has nothing to do with what you are searching for and everything to do with the amount of posts on here now.

I understand trying to break real systems that people rely on for their livelihood, unrealistic scenarios are great for identifying problems that may not have surfaced right away and could be a nightmare in the future.

I see no reason for anyone to search for the word "Thread" or "Threads" on this board, and if you are, you're likely looking for something more specific, searching "thread" in the title only (Say I was looking for the "Thread for things that make you smile" thread) works just fine for me (a bit slow, but how often am I doing that that it'd make a difference, the amount of time it'd take Kranar wouldn't be saved on my end, so why should he spend the time instead of me?)

I don't think anyone would be any happier if instead of seeing the ugly "x bytes have been used" or whatever it is error message they got a nice "Search criteria is not specific enough" message, because that'd be the quick bug "Fix" to this.

After that, it's not necessary, especially when that's not the purpose of the testing in the first place. It's to fix existing bugs, not regression test thinking that the updated code broke EVERYTHING, especially when the business is telling her to not waste time doing it. But that's a tangent for another time and place.

As for the search, it has its flaws, but it doesn't seem to be enough to be worth investigating. Perhaps more PMs and messages need to be sent directly to Kranar with a specific need and he can make it happen. He's not going to look through threads to find bugs, especially when the complaint isn't specific enough.

I personally think that is a shame and is a large security risk on top of it. Version 4.0 has much better search functionality, and I know, not believe, I KNOW, moving to 4.0 and changing web hosts would solve this problem.
