From the officials:
LORDKRIP
At this point, I figure using a runestaff is pretty non-mainstream as a cleric. Most clerics, especially upper-level ones tend to brawl/shield anyway.
My thoughts as well. I'm not going to go into much detail about it, since we still need to work everything out internally, but it was announced at SimuCon that the Unarmed Combat System would not work while holding a shield. So the brawl/shield method will only be viable until then.

I wonder how many pures are going to cancel after they become no longer viable.

So are brawling and UAC going to be the same skill?
Because they said UAC wouldn't be compatible with all brawling weapons, which makes me think you can still train in Brawling, use those weapons it isn't compatible with and be considered "brawling" instead of UAC. In which case, if you use a shield and brawl one-handed, if you put your weapon away to skin/whatever, you'd be considered UAC and loose all defense? Am I missing something? Because that seems counterintuitive.

Someone put this into stupid speak for me..my brawl/shield empath..will no longer be a viable option?

I imagine that is part of the details they're going to work out. But yeah, they can't sit on the fence with that. Either you can go UAC with all the brawling weapons or they need to still work with the AS/DS normal.

A lot of pures do not want to hold a runestaff. Get this through your head designers!

Alot of spell-casters need their hands to move to cast spells. Did you see Merlin rattling off spells carrying a wall shield bigger than him?
I don't like it either but it is what it is.

Gandalf held a sword and a runestaff!
I can't complain too much, my wizard only uses a shield and I'd switch to ranged if they mucked it up too bad. I just hope they're careful and don't screw everyone over.

Let them release UAC first before worrying over it. It's been coming out RSN for what.. 6 years?

Right, because holding a big stick is WAY less encumbering.
This is a dumb, dumb change if they ruin the build. If they ruin the OFFENSIVE capabilities of the Brawl/Shield build, so be it. If they make it unviable DEFENSIVELY, then they will seriously be fucking over a significant part of their playerbase.

I'm guessing defense from holding a brawling weapon + shield would remain unchanged, but shield + defense from an open hand is going away.

If they were smart...all they would need to do is make a new skill called (insert new name for old brawling here), have it cost the same as it does now, and call it a day.

I don't think you need to worry about brawl/shield builds in general. There's no need for a big crusade here. All Estild was commenting on was that you can't use the new Unarmed Combat System's attacks (or defend well against it) while wielding a shield.

Let this be a lesson to all, never trust Inspire's interpretation of anything. He isn't right, in the head.

Frankly, nothing was answered, though.
Oscuro and Estild have zero desire to see pures using shields. It's pretty evident.
Additionally, Estild would not have made the comment if it wasn't of significance. Neither one of them said what will happen with open hand and shield, assuming you have trained brawl. I'm a firm believer that it's a decent nerf to voln fu any way you turn it, for pures.
To each their own opinion, certainly. Oscuro blowing it off is just a smoke screen while they rethink or not. Estild comment wasn't, "We'd like to encourage people to go without a shield so we're going to up the DS for having two open hands."
