So, new to 712, did it just kill me?

>A Grimswarm troll hunter removes a plain wooden arrow from in his quiver.
A Grimswarm troll hunter fires a plain wooden arrow at you!
AS: +185 vs DS: +89 with AvD: +34 + d100 roll: +24 = +154
... and hits for 26 points of damage!
Nice puncture to the abdomen, just missed vital organs!
You sense that the shadows swirling around you refuse to come to your aid.
The shadowy tendrils begin to swirl faster and faster until they are just a blurred haze of fast moving darkness.
... 30 points of damage!
Hard blow breaks your femur!
... 60 points of damage!
Your neck has been removed!
Your head quickly falls to the ground.
The silvery luminescence fades from around you.
A dark shadow seems to detach itself from your body, swiftly dissipating into the air.

It seems you have died, my friend.

Obviously I got hit by the Grimswarm, but they dont have any crazy flares, were the 30 dmg and 60 dmg hits the results of chant retribution going off, but me failing some kind of roll (I have no lore training?) and losing my ass? I had "chant retribution 706" earlier, and this is the first time I've noticed being hit with it active. So, it this normal or am I just stupid?

Yeah, chant retribution without lore isn't the best. With zero demonology, I wouldn't recommend it.

I have 25 ranks of demons and my 706 retribution works pretty decently. I wouldn't try 130 with 25 ranks ><

I haven't actually gotten hit by a critter since I threw in demon lore.

You should try and get 50 ranks of Demonology Lore. This will give you a 95% success rate which is the best you can have.

I chanted retribution once with 130, unless things have changed over the last 5 years.... you may find that a painful trip... Though as someone pointed out to me. He used it while hunting in war camps. It was a lot better than ending up on the menu.

I do 719.

And it just saved my ass.

I normally use 708 with Zhelas. If the creature loses its right arm all is good. Desorceri recommended I try 717. If it didn't kill the creature outright even the creatures resistant to stun would lie prone.

When hunting Sentries.. Well hell... if you don't kill it, more than likely the last thing you will see is a focused implosion and you land in the tower in town.

To each their own hunting style.

Peace

I know some that swear by 708ing' the leg. The mob will just keep trying to stand up instead of casting or swinging.

True.. I think it really depends on whether or not creatures are BCS. Radicals, Combatants and Executioners just stand around as they gaze at their arms on the ground.

Ah, so it was failed retribution, good to know. I guess I wont be trying that again until I get some lores. So far life has been easy and good MDing everything that moves until it stops, but I think that'll stop soon, I guess we'll see. Thanks for the info though ya'll.

I prefer using 711 in my cloak. When something hits me and the cloak goes off then I know it's stunned for up to 7 seconds of RT and losing health as well. I wear padded armor though, so generally the hits I take aren't too hard. This strategy works very well for me in the temple if I get charged and then something mstrikes me and hits me 3 times for like 5 damage each time, my cloak basically kills it for me.

130 isn't a bad choice but it will end your hunt for you since you're one, fogged out, and two it takes almost all your spirit when it activates which prevents you from going back in. That's incredibly annoying if you're lightly stunned and then get nicked for a few damage. 130 has also cost me a few runestaves in areas that disarm so keep that in mind as well.
