to tell me what to put in my care package to my brother in Afghanistan.

I know there are a good amount of Veterans on this forum, and perhaps some currently deployed. His mother and sister usually take care of the hygiene products. So what would you have wanted sent to you.

PS. we already sent a kiddie pool...

Usually I send tons of Ludens Cough Drops. They taste like candy and he loves them...

This is just off the top of my head, but maybe some hygiene products, cough drops and a kiddy pool maybe.

Orly? Never would have thought of that.

I dunno man.

You should send him... another kiddy pool!

Then, when he receives the kiddy pool, you ship off and personally place it down beside the other kiddy pool, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle.

Actually you put a smaller one inside the larger one - so you get the eternity pool effect.

COCAINE.

I sent my brother reeses, even though they melted on the deck waiting to be dispersed he'd freeze them and eat them. I'd also send him peanuts, seasoning salt, hard candy, gum, and tobasco/hot sauce.

When he was doing MP duty in Iraq I usually sent him, along with the abovementioned crap, Copenhagen in a tin. He requested it because he used it to trade around to other guys and apparently it's an awesome bartering tool.

I always used to pack smokes and chew when going in the field. I use neither and made a killing when people ran out of the stuff they brought.

A couple dozen small squirt guns and a really big thing of tabasco sauce.

Mighty Nikkisaurus

Honestly though, think of snack food they like and that doesn't melt. Trail mix, pretzels, gold fish, little Debbie/hostess snacks, ritz crackers, beef jerkey, those shredded potato sticks things, gum, popcorn, rice crispy treats, salsa and chips, powdered drink mixes (gatorade, lemonade, crystal light, etc), pop tarts, snack bars (granola bars, power bars, nutrigrain bars), pickles, cup o noodles, those individual containers of soup and pasta that you microwave (i.e. cup of ravioli, cup of spaghetti-os), easy mac, graham crackers, cookies (homemade is allowed, vaccum seal them so they stay fresh), brownies/blondies, chex mix.. try to get everything in single serving size so that he can trade it for other stuff if he wants.

Tordane
07-26-2010, 04:47 PM
Current Magazines, Books, Mix CD's, Copenhagen(thirded), jerky, on-the-go packs(gatorade, kool-aid, crystal clear, etc)[mix with water].

Also good to ask if they need any equipment like sunglasses, decent sun block, sports gear, and even gov. issue upgrades.

Mighty Nikkisaurus
07-26-2010, 04:50 PM
And do not send porn, or booze. The entire package won't make it to them and they'll get in trouble.

Also, another good idea is to send him things that may be available only in the region you are in. A good friend of mine that joined kept asking for me to mail him A-Treat white birch beer.

Kippered snacks an' hi-capacity SD cards (64 gig an' up) wit' a couple o' da latest movies (digital copy types). Should be able ta get up to 4, mebbe 5 on the card.

If budget is no concern, send 'long one o' those new-fangled external harddrives with a bunch o' movies!

Dat would really stand out.

An' thanks fer da outstandin' avatar, SoTT!

I think what the swedish chef is trying to say is kippered snacks (no fucking clue what those are) and movies. The movies isn't really a bad idea as long as you know the person you're sending it to has the ability to read the media. SD would be a solid choice given it's survivability. Also, bork bork bork.

Make sure you post pics of the pool.

*If the smaller pool is not 'taller' than the larger one - you might have to improvise with some sort of platform/block devise. Bricks or cinder blocks would suffice without too much effort. Or an old tire if you want to keep it in genre with the trailer park theme.

Wait.. what?

He is my brother, however he is not my blood. My mother's last request before she died was that his mother take care of my brothers and I. Their family, and my family have become one in my mind. However, I specified his mother and sister to create the line between what I was sending and what his blood family was sending.

I guess it might be confusing to other people.

If he's working nights at all I'd say send some ramen noodles(the kind in their own bowl already). My husband lived on them for awhile because the chow hall opened later after his shift ended.

If you're feeling generous & using flat rate boxes(highly recommended), toss in some magazines for the guys to read.

We sent extra puzzle(rubix cube, etc), small games & crosswords we found at yard sales just so the guys who didn't have game systems, tvs & such had things to do.

Chapstick, sunblock &/or aloe gel.

Sporting goods stores sell these little scented things you toss into shoes to keep them from stinking, husband liked those so his pt shoes & boots didn't stench the room out.

Some of the most useful things I was sent (excluding yummie beef jerky and the like) were....

Mini Carabiners (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/ursalite_micro_carabiner.html) Great for clipping equipment NODS etc onto your gear and helmet. Saves a ton of time and effort from tying it down... Everyone in his unit needs them if they have been over there for a bit.

AA Batteries, no matter where you are there is always a shortage of AA batteries for both personal stuff and equipment

If he is an avid reader a Miniature LED book light that takes AA or AAA batteries is great

I could not find any online, but there are these little disposable toothbrushes that you just put on the tip of your finger, they work great and were easy to pack into gear when I was not planning on coming back for a few days. Also, Floss Sticks (http://www.amazon.com/Plackers-Lasting-Disposable-Sticks-Sensitive/dp/B002GTAQ16) are awesome
