View Full Version : Mana Leech effectiveness?

Krakiipedia says that first cast leech return is based on MjE ranks. I have 16 ranks, and cannot leech any mana. This is casintg against magical critters that should have mana (i.e. wraiths, wind witches, thunder trolls). I have no EMC, and am 1x in HP, but according to Krakiipedia these are not factors in first cast leech return. Is this just a case of knowing the spell not being enough to use it (i.e. I won't be able to leech anything until I have more 500 ranks), or is Krakiipedia wrong and EMC plays a role?

If you can ward them and they have mana, you should be getting at least something.
Also in other mana leech news, I always thought the max mana return was capped at ranks per level, which in my case would be 100. Apparently it's not though, I leeched like 110 or so from a sand devil the other day. I'm level 100 with 138 MjE ranks.

Okay, someone in game told me EMC is a factor, and I tested it out since I'm still in my insta-migrate period. Definitely more EMC = more leechable mana, so perhaps if whoever runs Krakiipedia sees this an update is in order?

Admittedly, my test sample size was not that big, and my methodology was half-assed. But basically, a dozen or so casts at various magical critters that I believed to be freshly spawned, with various warding margins and 0 EMC all returned no mana. At 3 EMC ranks, and same conditions, I would get 1 or 2 mana usually. At 7 EMC ranks I would get 2 to 5 usually.

Could it possibly be a percentage based on the skill bonus?

I would definately get more EMC ranks. I have no idea of the formula but the amount pulled seems tied to EMC.

I've always been under the impression that the endroll determines how much you can get for a given leech attempt and then a transfer efficiency is applied to it exactly like SEND (i.e. 24 ranks of EMC will maximize your leech). The amount you can leech from a given creature definitely depends upon their max mana.
As an example, I could usually get around 60-70 mana from frozen corpses (~40 on the first shot, ~20 on the second, and nothing thereafter) and snow crones I could leech for >100.
so perhaps if whoever runs Krakiipedia sees this an update is in order?
It's a wiki.

You can leech a max of your MjE ranks per cast, this is lowered as you get closer to needing to 'recharge'.
You can leech a max of your mana pool before having to 'recharge'.
Warding and EMC determine if you meet your max pull.
Recharging what you can leech is calculated at 1 minute after your LAST leech, so if you leech something every 20 seconds, you will not begin recharging, if you leech something ever 61 seconds, you'll get one recharge pulse between leeches.
Recharge pulses are determined by EMC, every 20 skill results in 1 more mana recharged in these pulses (this formula may not hold up at all skill levels). So if you leech 30 mana, and have 100 skill, it'll take 6 minutes to be back to full leeching capabilities.

Alright thanks. Looks like I'll need to get a bunch of EMC to be using this spell effectively.
Now I guess I have to decide if it's worth fitting that in to my war mage training path...

425 makes mana leech even more fun. Suggest you have that spell when you hit that level.

False, 425 means that all monsters have their eTDs increased expecting you to have 425 up.
