Stupid slippery slope thing there. There are plenty of things that reduce attentiveness while driving, and they're all pretty difficult to enforce restrictions on. Driving while tired is arguably more dangerous than texting, since most (assumption) people realize that texting while driving is dangerous while they are doing it and do so in a manner that makes them more attentive to the road (I've texted 'brt' while driving, and things along those lines, never full texts, but when I do so, it practically takes me a minute a letter, and I'm ultra-attentive, I know not everyone is this way).

Speech recognition software makes it a lot better, but that then encourages communication while driving, which can be just as distracting. Well educated/trained drivers are the only reasonable answer I know of, full restrictions on things like texting may stop some people, but not everyone.

I'm not saying I know the answer, I just don't think it's that clearcut as to say ban texting while driving. (I actually get more distracted now when I get a phone call because of the no talking while driving thing, as I try to covertly attend to the phone, be it checking the caller ID to see if it's worth answering or getting my phone into speaker mode or whatever, I don't drive enough to have setup a good system like some people have w/ bluetooth headsets).

I think it would kill no one if cell phones were banned-period-in the car.
I know people who can't talk on the phone and drive.
They should install something that kills cell phone connection when you get in a car.
We didn't have cell phones not that long ago, people can survive a car ride without communicating with the outside world.

The only problem with banning cellphone connection when in a car (by some device that blocks signal) is that sometimes people do get into accidents when they CAN reach their phone BUT they can't get out of the car in order to call for help.

I still wouldn't say don't ban just because of this. The ODDS are, someone with a cell would pass.. and they could stop, get out of the car, and call 911.
Due to these odds, it would be better to prevent a whole lot of accidents.

I don't think they would pass a law like that. It can cause too much danger. Because the moment it passed, someone somewhere in the middle of bum-fuck nowehere would crash their car and end up dying from injuries that could be properly taken care of by a doctor. But they died because they couldn't call for help. And a whole shitstorm would happen and the law would come under fire and blah blah blah

So politicians seeing this possibility would probably not pass the law in the first place.

But thats just my opinion, sometimes those guys can surprise you

Edit: I'm not saying that I don't agree with you. I'm just saying I don't think it would happen. I try not to text, or even make a phone call when driving. But I'm the first one to admit that I do indeed do it.

I agree. If my phone didn't work in my car, I wouldn't WANT to use it (obviously) and it would be safer. and I might be pissed for a little bit, but I'd get over it and realize it was for my safety.

To some extent I support legislation when it starts to affect and impose on the rights of others. I suppose that would be my line in the sand with regards to the imposition of government upon our freedoms.

Someone having a head on collision while texting would fall into that category. Especially if I was the other participant in that instance.

The slippery slope is what you mentioned with regards to passenger activities. Should they be regulated? Should we require all cars not have things in them that could distract from teh driver? No radio, complete silence (a blessing for those with kids) or other things?

At what point is personal responsibility trumped by legislation?
