View Full Version : Little one born!
My little guy was born yesterday at 1218. He came into the world weighing 6lbs 1.5oz and 19 3/4 inches.
Sadly he had some fluid buildup in his lungs so he is in the NICU, but all is looking up and we hope to be able to take him home on Tuesday.

Awesome, congrats!
Welcome to a brave new world... a world of little sleep (for the month or two before you deploy?), and a lot of crying and pooping. The baby, too.

Yeah the wife knows all about babies... Me not so much... so I've already gotten the crash course in feeding, burping, and cleaning up the messes over the last two days. It appears that is going to be solely my job up until I leave, which I'm okay with. So far hes been pretty good with crying, silence has been just a feeding, cleaning or a pacifier away....
Doubt it will stay that way though.

This is actually a really good idea to help with bonding in the time you have.

Welcome to the best club ever.

Very handsome! Either I missed it, or it wasn't mentioned!
What did you name him?

Robert Marcial, after his grandfathers.

Yeah, sadly i don't think it going to have much of an effect on him... I'm already enthralled with the little guy but being gone for a year or more, I'm just going to be a stranger when I get back

Aww. I like the name Robert. Thats my brother's name. But thats not why I like it.
I like it because its strong and I think it will suit him well. Plus, family names are always covered in awesomesauce.
:] Congrats!
And I don't have personal experience with this, but I think that your son will have a connection to you regardless. There is just something about family, you know they're family even when you don't. (if that made sense at all)

Tell that to the siblings seperated at birth who end up married. IT HAPPENS.

Okay. Yes, that does happen...
I think there is a case about it in Ireland or Scotland where half brother/sister had a baby and got married to find out that they had the same father...
Anyways, I meant more children to their parents. But I suppose you could debate that too...
Maybe its just in my life that I've always known who my family was.

Congrats! Beautiful baby.
A suggestion, friend of mine, before he deployed, made a few vids, reading a couple of stories, just talking to the baby, saying her name, singing a lullabye. Mom played those vids to their daughter all the time, baby loved them, snoozed to the lullabyes and stories, listened to the conversations. They tell me that when he returned, the baby absolutely knew his face and his voice, and was totally into Daddy. Might work for you?
Regardless, love 'em, love 'em some more.

There's no teeth yet so it's probably cool.

It worked for another friend of mine as well. They web-cammed whenever possible as well.

Major congratulations. I agree with the video taping idea. It sucks being away from your kid for any extended period of time, but really the first year is all pooping and puking anyway. You'll be home just in time for when he actually starts being fun.
There's no teeth yet so it's probably cool.
Congrats, dude.
Bastard beat me to it.
Yeah grats Dave. Don't drop it.

Congrats on a healthy baby. :)
My daughter didn't see her father from 4 months until she was a year old and during that time she only had phone conversations with him. When she saw him, she knew immediately who he was and had no reservations about hanging out and doing whatever with him. I wouldn't worry too much about being gone. Take some of the other poster's advice and you'll be fine.

Congrats!
I've heard of a lot of military families doing the video thing with little ones to help stay connected. Totally worth doing.
And while kids may get fun around a year old, they also start getting into more as they're more mobile and curious...so depending on your perspective, you could be missing out on the "easy time" (said after I desperately tried to keep my 21-month-old out of everything she shouldn't have been into 45 minutes ago).
(Btw, my 2nd thought on seeing the pic, after "So cute!", was, "Does every hospital in this country use the same hat, blanket and pacifier??")
We already planned on doing the skype thing, but per everyone's good advice we're going to sit down and record me reading the Peter Rabbit (http://www.peterrabbit.com/us/index.asp) books so she can play them for him when I'm not able to get online.
Sadly we were not able to take him home yet since hes been in the NICU for breathing/eating issues but its looking hopeful for tomorrow. I'm going to go enjoy my last night of normal uninterrupted blissful sleep
Still not home. He had a breathing "episode" last night and will be in the NICU for another 5 days at a minimum =(.

This sucks. I had a friend who's baby was in the NICU for 39 days before she came home -- it can be nerve-wracking and trying, but at least you know they're in capable hands.

As sad as I know that is, it's really great that they are catching it in the hospital before you take him home, so you won't have that stress.. I imagine you would never sleep if he was having breathing episodes at home!!
Congratulations on the kiddo, hope he gets out of NICU after the next 5 days.
