I've searched for any information on what might affect this sort of thing, but I haven't found any information as far as research on how any of this works.
There any sort of ideas as to what might affect this? Is it like empaths where your actual skill or level doesn't matter and you just get X amount for a trap/lock of Y difficulty?
Thanks.

Unless I'm making this up I thought you got more experience the harder the pick was. Meaning using a lower pick (copper) could get your more xp, picking locks towards the upper limit of your range could get your more xp, etc. But that might just be total "hold a smooth stone in your hand to absorb faster" type stuff.
TLDR: I don't know.

Under normal situations (not belled and have at least 30 lockpick ranks) the most experience you can get from a lock is 150.
The key is how your maxlock when you open the lock compares with the lock difficulty.
If your maxlock with a copper lockpick is 300, and you open a 300 lock with a copper lockpick, you get 150 exp. As the lock gets easier, the experience starts to go down. You can go a few lock sizes below your maxlock and still get 150 but then you start losing experience slowly to start with and then at a faster rate until somewhere around 200 below your maxlock, you are down at the minimum. i.e. open a 100 lock with copper when your maxlock is 300 and you will get 25 exp.
Open that 300 lock with glaes and your maxlock is now 480 and again you will be down around 25 exp for it.
Use lore and exp is halved. Have less than 30 ranks, and you just get a flat 20 or 10 lored.
As a rule of thumb, if you don't take much RT when you open the box, you don't get much exp for it either.

It's good to note that exp for locksmithing doesn't kick in until you have 30 ranks in picking locks.

TLDR version:
If the lock is within I think -150 of your max lock for the lockpick you're using, you'll get full (150) exp.
I have no idea how lock mastery affects anything though, if at all. Never paid much attention to it, but I think it's good for measuring the lock so you can better choose which lockpick to use.
I miss lockpicking, I need to pick it back up again.
