Heard that on the radio today.

I guess if our only sport was professional soccer we could just have sports on Saturday.

Unfortunately, we don't suck.

The pope is getting dillusional.

I'm not entirely convinced he isn't dead already and the other highups are using him for a very scary ventriloquist act.

Whenever I see that man he's hunched over like a sick gerbil. I hope he isn't in any kind of pain.

Gah, no more baseball on Sundays? Good thing I am not Catholic.

Sadly enough, his mental capacity is supposedly fully intact. Parkinsons just attacks the body.

Silly ruling, either way.

Just last month the Vatican joined Moslem countries in blocking a vote to add sexuality to the classes protected under the UN's international declaration of human rights. The measure was put forward by Brazil and supported by Canada and most of Europe. (And most of these Muslim countries have laws outlawing homosexuality which are vigorously enforced and very punitive.)

The Vatican is also objecting to the UN giving marriage benefits to same sex couple who are citizens of countries that extend those benefits to their citizens. Not to everyone, mind you. Just of those countries with same sex marriage laws already. Needless to say, those Muslim countries also object to the UN doing that.

I'm guessing the Pope is longing for the days when the Church ruled the Western world in an iron fist and no one dared contradict it. The Vatican is beginning to have more in common with extremist Islam countries than so-called Christian Western nations.

So I suppose gays who like sports are doubly condemned.

I'll be sure to toast the Pope with at least one beer during every sporting event I watch on Sundays.

That sucks for all the hardcore Catholics who watch sports on Sunday.

Yes.. because it is GOD'S will to make you sit in church for hours on end dying of boredom.

It's GOD'S will for all men not to enjoy Sundays.

Give me a break.

Oh, here's a blast from the past. Lets just have them start selling us indulgences again so we can do whatever we want on Sundays.:saint::saint::saint:

Give me a break. To hell with our souls, we want to be entertained!!!

If the only way you can enjoy a Sunday is to watch someone else (who you have no relationship with) play a game, I think you need more than one break.

I'll never understand the Church's plan of attack, I gotta admit. They seem to go after the most random stuff sometimes, ignoring the root problems. I'll try to get a word in with the Bishop.

edit: Raven, I think what he's longing for are the days when priests could keep their cassocks on, when it wasn't cool to make fun of Catholicism, and when he could ski, let alone walk.

Man, that's over the top. I mean, orthodox Jews have rules about working on the Sabbath and a whole bunch of other related things, but they don't try to impose their laws on everyone else. I know a few who would LIKE to see the rest of the world comply, but even those few aren't gonna try to lobby for it.

If Catholics don't want to work on their Sabbath (which would include playing professional baseball since it -is- a job, afterall), then I say let them have their own laws and follow them as they see fit. But to try and demand the rest of the world follow suit? That's just silly. THE REST OF THE WORLD ISN'T CATHOLIC! Yeesh.

Actually.. I find it amusing you believe you will lose your so called "soul" by watching someone play a game on Sunday.

You can't "lose" your soul.

If I spend one hour in church, and three hours watching a game, which will I think about more? C'mon, it's not that hard a connection.

You are the one that said "To hell with our souls" not me. Coming from a hard line Christian.. it lead me to take it verbatim... that you would lose your soul to Satan if you watched games on your Sabbath. THAT is why I found it so amusing.

If there really was this God you claim there is.. I doubt very much that he would worry about his followers watching entertainment on TV on anyday. If He does, then maybe he is not as benevolent as is claimed.

THAT is why I found it so amusing. For future reference, anytime I end a sentence with three exclamation points, I am not being serious. The same goes for any other unusual punctuation. For instance: You did what?!?!?!?!? not serious. You did what? serious.
If there really was this God you claim there is.. I doubt very much that he would worry about his followers watching entertainment on TV on anyday. If He does, then maybe he is not as benevolent as is claimed. Doing things because God will forgive you anyway isn't a real bang-up moral foundation. I'm positive God would rather you do things other than watch a game on TV. Like, say, work in a soup kitchen, or help out a neighbor, or go outside and toss the pigskin around with your family. Again, I don't understand why the Pope would go after this specific instance rather than saying "families should spend more active time together", but I've never met the Pope, so I don't know how his mind works.

Religion? Nothxu.

It's always a good time to be an atheist. It really puts the real world into perspective without the safety net of "Oh well, at least I have the afterlife to look forward to".

Condemning the "culture of the here and now," the Holy Father encouraged the leaders of the church to "lead men and women from the shadows of moral confusion and ambiguous thinking." Noting the secular culture is undermining family life, the pope encouraged Catholics to remain faithful to the Sunday Mass.

I wonder if the Pope realizes sports promote the family life far more than Sunday Mass?

Hell, the only time I was ever close to my father growing up is when we'd meet in the living room on Sundays to cheer on the Bills, or to go to the home games.

I seriously think the Pope is becoming delusional. However, it's sad, because he's recently red-hatted a buncha conservatives bishops, almost guaranteeing that when he dies, someone of similar mindset will get the chair.

I think the problem is, the Church fears becoming irrelevant, which it is, in the modern world. But this certainly isn't the way to solve that.

I don't watch tv or sports or play computer games on sunday. I go to church in the morning, and I spend time with my family. I'm completely in love and adore my time with my family on Sundays. We have big dinners and sit around the table for hours and hours chatting away and it couldn't be more fun or entertaining. We do this because we believe that by taking that time out to spend with out families, it is a tribute to the Sabbath.

There are a million things wrong with society...just think how much better it would be if people put spending quality time with their children or serving the community as their number one priority rather than being glued to a triple dose of football games on any day, not just Sunday. I think that's really the point. However, because Sunday is considered the Sabbath for Christians, that's why it is pointed out as "the day" to do such things.

If you believe in God or not, if you want to practice a religion or not, you can't deny the good purposely putting "better" things ahead on your priority list than a computer game or a sports event would be on your personal life.

Just my couple of pennies...

Even if he was trying to bash atheists with that statement, I wouldn't be very insulted. It's rather insightful no matter what the intention.

I think the whole point of the matter is, Chyrain, is that if you were a Christian, you would do that any day of the week, regardless of when the Sabbath was. Thus, it wouldn't matter if you watch the game on Sunday, because hell, you spend time "doing 'better' things" other times.

Although I will say this: there is no such thing as a more spiritually rich event as football. None.

We've had this discussion before, but I'm still right (:P), so I'll say it again: Baseball > Football.

TheEschaton

Well, what? Kairos is a once (twice, if you lead) in a lifetime experience. You can't put those on a scale with football.

I might amend the idea that nothing is more spiritually rich than football, but I find spiritual richness in football nonetheless.

Edited to add: Whereas baseball is a buncha guys standing around scratching their balls and chewing tobacco. Can find that on any porch in the South, that doesn't make it a sport.
