What I think would be interesting

With all the angst going on about who's killing who and who's in what gang...

I used to play a game called Neverwinter Nights on AOL back in the mid 90's. There were "safe" areas of the game where system mechanics did not allow CvC, and areas where ganking was allowed. Various guilds would claim ownership of some of the CvC areas, and epic battles were fought there. It wasn't as sophisticated as Gemstone in the sense of mechanics and what not, but I LOVED the concept. Wild untamed areas where rewards were nicer (better loot) and risks higher (chance of getting ganked).

You folks are trying to say the world is yours unless you pay my fees... I think a good and viable alternative would be to say something like... You want to hunt titans, you gotta pay us, or we'll gank you if you are on our turf.

You want to get into the sewers, there's a 1000 silver entry fee, or we send in our ethugs.

Shit like that. Factions could form, particularly in towns - gang fights could occur, planned wars, unplanned wars, invasions, etc.

Well what we are doing now is working for us, so I see no need to change. You have good ideas though!

The problem, however, is this: People will still cry. They will whine and cry and moan and scream and call us all sorts of names and act as if we are personally ruining their lives IRL and are worse than nazis combined with communists. And we'll be getting less reward for our troubles. (Wow, RC, you went and did the crying pre-emptively before I could even post)

A group is apparently already forming against us. 3 factions currently exist. Those who like us, those who hate us, and those who dont care.

You miss my point, which is this - ultimately, it's a RPing game. No rules or not, it's still RPing. Killing someone without any interaction at all isn't roleplaying.

If you advertise on the net something like

"We are in control of the glacier. No one hunts it without the Yakuza's express permission. Want phat lewt from rarely hunted mobs, we will sell you hunting rights to it."

"If you are found poaching, the penalty is death. If you are found poaching twice, we'll kill your family"

Shit like that makes interaction FUN. Don't want to pay the fee and just script all day long? GS is big enough you can without hampering your enjoyment. You have your fun being a gang and playing, they have their fun either fighting your gang, or testing your grounds limits, or whatever else.

Randomly killing people, which is what you do, isn't roleplaying, doesn't facilitate player growth, more often than not will result in nothing more than hard feelings (even if it's not on your part - it's still valid).

You call it whining and crying, when the reality is you are just saying your way is right and theirs is wrong. Which is what they are saying. Either you both are whining and crying, neither are whining and crying, but it's not one or the other.

But, we DO interact. Sure, its AFTER we kill them that the interaction takes place but...there is interaction.

I even put in the extortion thing because people wanted us to RP more, so I found it was an acceptable way to RP what I was trying to get across.

So...as I said. It doesnt matter WHAT we do. If we kill them, they will call us names. I dont mind. RC is cute when hes raging :)

Oh, and another point...

Dead people can't pay fees. The mafia kills only when it benefits them. They know that it needs to happen sometimes, but really, a dead person cannot continue to pay.

Instead of dead, replace that with you've gone past the point where I'll (the player) tolerate your bullshit, and I'll either never pay you, quit, or form up against you. Which, you claim you want the CvC, but frankly I think it's now PvP and will result ultimately in hard feelings.

Again, just my unbiased opinion based on the awesome threads here. I think you guys are missing the point of being bad guys. Bad guys don't hide in the dark. They walk freely in the streets and flaunt their power. Can you say that about you walking around in plain sight, alone?

Bad guys should strike fear (even if it's not "real" fear) into others. Your prey should be willing, or at worst, unwilling but afraid of the alternatives. Some may not even consider it a real inconvience (consider we pay taxes for police IRL) and just part of living. They should not be pissed off, frustrated, upset, whatever - with YOU behind the character.

Again, just my opinion. I will give you that it is MUCH harder to be what I'm describing, versus the whole "feint, swing, kill, extort, repeat" routine. You (general you for those in the "gang") said so yourself as you are at the point you script it. Um... yay fun?

Keep up the good work. Eventually the crying will stop and people will probably fight back enough so that you can't do what you're doing anymore, but for now it's very entertaining to watch a lot of the usual PC assholes go boohoo. You'd at least have to define it as "useless venting". At least there's the BriarFox movement in place to start taking some real action so we'll get less venting/complaining/sadface (not crying) posts.
