View Full Version : Cicada Invasion
So, who here is going to be covered in cicadas? According to a map I saw, middle TN is going to be swamped. I lived in west TN during the last 17 year invasion and it wasn't an issue. I hear they're good eating. (ugh)
If my daughter was out of school by then, I'd be taking a month long trip. I hate bugs!

I live in West TN so I'll be on the lookout I suppose.
Ive been in one cicada invasion here in IL, and I don't wish to experience them again. Good luck with the bugs , they're gonna be EVERYWHERE!

They are big as heck, loud as heck and just seem to be everywhere when they arrive.
At the least it will be something you remember.

We get cicadas here in semi-rural Connecticut every spring. I don't remember ever seeing swarms of them, like last year's cricket invasion, but we get enough that it sounds like the very earth is SCREECHING all night long until mid-Autumn.
On the other hand, a single cicada makes a lot of noise, so it could just be a small cluster for all we know.
The crickets are neat, fun to watch and play with, but devestating on the plantlife.
Cicadas are actually good looking bugs, and if they wanna go to town on the two dead trees in the back yard, they're welcome to them. It'll be less work when we finally cut the suckers down and pull up the roots.

The best time to eat them's when they're soft!
Apparently, they taste like cold, canned asparagus.

Ish. I wonder if we will get them in Western South Carolina? I am not fond of bugs, but they do have a cheery song.
HarmNone will try to like the little varmits

According to the map on one of the related sites, I guess I'll be seeing them this year... and I'm not looking forward to it. :barf:
edit: Because I'm stupid.

Looks like just the southern corner of North Carolina. We should escape them this year, if the map proves to be correct. :D

When I was a kid (the last 17 year invasion) we used to play with them. We used to build them mazes out of cardboard and have races. We used to take the shells off of trees and put them in girls hair.
I wonder if they'll be as fun at this age.

I kinda figured you were a pain in the ass as a kid, Wezas.
Not much has changed. :p
According to the map, it looks like Mass will be spared! ::cheer::
And I read they can taste like anywhere from asparagus to "clam-flavored potato." That's some spectrum they're covering there.
Soooo....who's willing to try one and tell us what exactly it tastes like?

I would, but they won't be here.
Someone can FedEx me a few, though.

What do they taste like?
Periodical cicadas are best eaten when they are still white (teneral), and they taste like cold canned asparagus. Like all insects, cicadas have a good balance of vitamins, are low in fat, and the females are especially high in protein. They are also Atkins friendly!
From Artha's link.
More reason to hate vegetables. They taste like Cicada.

I lived in Memphis before and never even heard of them.
I remember when I lived in south TX (Houston) we used to get all these little bugs that would swarm... mostly the cars suffered. The front end of cars would be covered in dead bugs. We called them fuck-bugs (cause I guess they were mating... always stuck together).
No cicada pizzas for me. (ugh again)

Do they have fried, breaded cicada on a stick? If they don't, I bet they will at the Minnesota State Fair this year.

Brood X just makes me think these are like, Mutant cicada's that shoot fire out their ass and lightning from their eyes!
I love the name, so very hip. Bob should draw some up for us to see what a Brood X Cicada looks like

Yeah, but it would be exponentially cooler if it weren't a thumbnail.

Why oh why do they combine rides that make you puke with all that fried stuff? I personally like the fried corn. Remember The Simpsons episode where they went to the fair and Homer got his clothes deep fried?
Also, nice picture Bob. Hope they aren't that big.

Last year they had deep-fried candy bars on a stick, and deep-fried pickles on a stick.
