View Full Version : Slovenia vs. United States
Totally doable. Slovenia only scored one goal against Algeria. England may have given us a tie but we still held up strong against a world class league.
GO GO USA!!!

It's not insurmountable. They've been putting in some really good attempts on Slovenia.. it's just the USA defense seems to be lacking today.
Give me Eddson Buddle and some one to replace the Gooch.

How do ties in group standings work?
Eng v Alg|Eng v Slo|USA v Alg|Result|Points (USA, Eng, Slo, Alg)
Eng|Eng|USA|Advance|5, 7, 4, 0
Eng|Eng|TIE|Drop|3, 7, 4, 1

Eng|Tie|USA|Tie|5, 5, 5, 0

Eng|Tie|Alg|Drop|2, 5, 5, 3
Eng|Slo|USA|Advance|5, 4, 7, 0
Eng|Slo|Tie|Drop|3, 4, 7, 1
Eng|Slo|Alg|Drop|2, 4, 7, 3
Tie|Eng|USA|Advance|5, 5, 4, 1
Tie|Eng|TIE|Drop|3, 5, 4, 2
Tie|Eng|Alg|Drop|2, 5, 4, 4
Tie|Tie|USA|Advance|5, 3, 5, 1
Tie|Tie|TIE|Tie|3, 3, 5, 2
Tie|Tie|Alg|Drop|2, 3, 5, 4
Tie|Slo|USA|Advance|5, 2, 7, 1

Alg|Eng|Alg|Drop|2, 5, 4, 6
Alg|Tie|USA|Advance|5, 3, 5, 3
Alg|Tie|TIE|Drop|3, 3, 5, 4
Alg|Tie|Alg|Drop|2, 3, 5, 6
Alg|Slo|USA|Advance|5, 2, 7, 3
Alg|Slo|Tie|Drop|3, 2, 7, 4
Alg|Slo|Alg|Drop|2, 2, 7, 6
I think that's right... 9 out of the 27 outcomes result in the US advancing, 2 result in ties that I don't know how are resolved (Point diff?)
TheEschaton
06-18-2010, 12:33 PM
Ties are resolved by head to head with the team you're tied with, followed by goal differential, followed by I believe goals scored.
RichardCranium
06-18-2010, 12:33 PM
ESPN's reporting that England is replacing Green with James for today's game so there's always that.

TheEschaton
06-18-2010, 12:36 PM
So, since we've tied both England and Algeria, it'd go to goal differential - right now we're level with England (pending today's afternoon match), and one behind Slovenia if we tied them. 2 goals will help the total goal count, if England doesn't score much against Algeria, but that's why a 0-0 tie this afternoon is about the best results we can hope for, barring a 1-0 win by Algeria.

..and I don't remember if they go by goal differential first THEN a tie breaker.. or a tie breaker first and then goal differential if that game ties as well.
I think that's right... 10 out of the 27 outcomes result in the US advancing, 2 result in ties that I don't know how are resolved (Point diff?)
So in all but one scenario where the US wins they advance in in the other scenario it goes to tiebreaker. Basically, the US has to beat Algeria (and by a handful of points would be better).

So in all but one scenario where the US wins they advance in in the other scenario it goes to tiebreaker. Basically, the US has to beat Algeria (and by a handful of points would be better).
That's what it looks like. I did those manually so I may have messed one or two up (Actually I did, fixed them, but could still have other mistakes), but the take-away is that we're not so screwed, we just need to be Algeria and then things will be looking up.
Yeah I was thinking Slovenia had basically secured it for some reason but then I remembered they still have yet to play England. My brain was kind of fried from the ridiculous call. Algeria isn't going to beat or draw England so basically we just have to count on England beating Slovenia (hopefully not allowed any points) and the US beating Algeria. If we do that we should be good.
That will give England 7 points. USA 4. Slovenia 4. Algeria 0. Then we would go to goal differential. Worst result would be if England beat Slovenia 5-4.
Asrial
06-18-2010, 12:58 PM
The USA would be at 5 points if we beat Algeria (3 + 1 + 1).
TheEschaton
06-18-2010, 01:08 PM
yeah, the one nightmare scenario is actually the 5, 5, 5, tie. What that means is that it'll be a 3 way tie breaker, since that involves England SLovenia tying, they'd all come down to goal differential, meaning how badly the U.S. beats Algeria (needs to be by more than 1) vs. how badly England beats Algeria (needs to be by more than 1). If England beat Algeria by 2+, and have a differential of +2 or higher, they're almost certain to be in even with a draw against Slovenia.
TheEschaton
06-18-2010, 01:10 PM
BTW, there's only two scenarios where we would go through (again, depending on the tiebreaker), which includes us not beating Algeria.
Celephais
06-18-2010, 01:11 PM
That will give England 7 points. USA 4. Slovenia 4. Algeria 0.
The USA would be at 5 points if we beat Algeria (3 + 1 + 1).
Consult ze chart! As Asrial said, 5, 7, 4, 0.

06-18-2010, 01:13 PM
BTW, there's only two scenarios where we would go through (again, depending on the tiebreaker), which includes us not beating Algeria.
And both of those scenarios require that we at least tie Algeria. One of which does not depend on a tiebreaker. If Eng ties algeria, we tie algeria, and slovenia beats england, we advance.

Well, there are three games, each with three possible outcomes. If you want to give me the percent chance of each outcome we can plot out all the possibilities and make Latrin blow his load.
Right now with even odds of every outcome, the US has a 33% chance of advancing, and a 7.4% chance of it going to tiebreaker. I think it's better than that.

It's pretty much win or go home. If both England and U.S. tie and they don't score more than 2 goals than we do (2-2 tie vs. 0-0, or 3-3 vs 1-1) we can go through.
BTW, if both U.S. and ENgland win, we win the group as long as they don't outscore us overall by 2 goals. An England tie and a win by us could also win us the group, depending on the tiebreakers with Slovenia - so far they have a +1 goal differential, but the scenario requires that to drop to at least 0, and we've each scored 3 so far.

Yeah, true, we can still advance, but it puts even more pressure on us for the ALgeria game. Donovan already said that he feels gutted. Who knows what they'll be like going into the next game. It's just a shame to see that second half effort, and what should have been a win, only count as a tie.

This.
As much as I hate to say it, I feel that Onweyu has played terribly, and cost us 2 goals. He didn't mark lampard in game one, which let him score, and he didn't press the slovenian player on the first goal. Hell, he didn't even stand up. Such a let down.
Go back a year and I saw a US team with a back four that was playing lights out. Now it looks like a mess back there. Which is a shame because Howard is a damn good keeper, and could probably keep a clean sheet if the back four stepped up on D.
