In Paris and about to head to a bar to snag a seat for the France v. Mexico game.

But before I go, I just have one question: If you're a member of the Tea Party, and you like soccer, do you root against France or Mexico tonight?

Trick question, no one in the Tea Party likes soccer.

Trick question: Soccer is socialist so you don't root for either.

All I know is that if I'm a socialist, I'm rooting for anyone who plays the USA. We don't deserve to win for all the problems in the world we've created.

I'm also going to root against Israel for the same reason.

Anyone have a screen grab of that dude that was decked out in the awesome feathered headdress? They showed him celebrating right after the penalty kick.

Because whenever an Israeli sees an unidentified object flying at him, he shoots first and asks questions later. Comes from all the quick-draw military training those badasses get.

They didn't qualify. They never do.

Yeah, Fallen, there's a lot more teams in the world than qualify for the 64 spots in the World Cup.

The non-offsides call on the first goal was a bit close, but probably called right.

It was close, but I think it was called correctly. What a great game though!

I'm not sure who dives more, the French team or Ronaldo...I think it's a toss up. Mexico looked great, and I was glad to see the 22 year old that United just signed scored (and timed that really great run) :)

Diving? Did you see the Uruguay game yesterday? Suarez dived more than the whole French team himself.

Is that why they allow games to end in a draw?

I seem to recall there being 32 slots for the world cup.

They allow games to end in a draw if the games are in a league. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw.

What happens in a game of American handegg if the scores are tied at full time? Do they carry on going till someone scores? What's the point of that?

For the NFL, during the regular season, there are TWO OT periods max, after that if the score is still tied, the game CAN end in a tie. The game is handled the same as a regular game (kickoff, then they just play).

College football, another coin toss decides who is on offense/defense first, and the ball is spotted at the 25(might be 35). The offensive team does their best to score. Either way, after their 'turn' the opposing team gets their shot. This goes back and forth until there is a winner. Oh, and after a few tries, each team has to go for a 2 point conversion when they score a TD.

American handegg

Ahem.

All games called football today evolved from the first football games in 15th century England. Today the Brits like to get a little uppity because they presume the game is named football because the ball is played with your feet and Americans are too stupid to realize their game isn't. However games named football received the name because they were played on foot rather than on horseback as was the standard at the time for nobility. The manner in which the ball moved wasn't important (and likely wasn't kicked by foot until much later, our ancestors knew opposable thumbs were what made humans special, not feet), just the manner of propulsion.

The more you know...

As already has been explained, they don't just carry on, there are rules about it.

What's the point of that?

Erm... the point? It's a competitive match, the point is to find a winner, this isn't T-Ball where they don't keep score and everyone's a winner.

For reference... in the one true sport, there are no ties unless Bud Selig craps the bed or the sun goes down.
