View Full Version : Drop the shield and pick up the (claid/mace/sai/____?)?

Ok, so I'm thinking about dropping the shield and going two hander or dual weapons. (Leaning Dual)

I am at work right and do not have access to my char but I have a fixskills and I want to try something new. Caiy is level 35 with maxed armor.

Suggestions on those options?

Also, if I do this I will have 3 4x blessables, 1 4x battle worn shield and 1 5x rolaren backsword to trade for the weapons I will need after switch. All OHE of course.

If more info is needed let me know and I will post it when I get home.

I figure I will need to drop shield and ohe training. I would also respec my Cmans to be more defensive.

I had a lot of fun with my sais, and hunted without trouble using a combination of sais (4x flaring or 6x blessable) and fu (mainly sais) with copious amounts of MoC up to around 50, and wasn't expecting to have any problems for a while.

you could likely get the same feel but be MUCH more effective with some beefier weapons, sais hit like toothpicks but it was fun and flavorful. they're much better suited as ambushing weapons.

What are other good choices for TWC?

I personally like shortswords. However the joy of dual wielding is mixing and matching to fit a hunting ground. Heavy armor guys? Snag two handaxes. Light armor stuff? Can get away with a longsword/dagger, two shortswords, two daggers.

My favorites would be handaxes, katars or morning stars.

Big katar in right hand with a lightweight sai in your offhand can be pretty brutal if you know what you're doing and what to hunt. Can't pull it off on my Paladin because I picked up too much trading to OHE, but that's a quick, efficient killer. The best thing is that the sai acts like a main gauche in your offhand.

If you've got both a permanently flaring katar and sai, QSTRIKE the snot out of everything and watch the fireworks.

My buddy's rogue was a TWC Sai hybrid, they're great ambushing weapons b/c they puncture, but don't hit all that hard.

My buddy's rogue was a TWC Sai hybrid, they're great ambushing weapons b/c they puncture, but don't hit all that hard.

They work fine on MOST things for mstriking too, just have to be a little more selective on where you hunt. Because of the puncture you get those nice low rank knockdowns, and the mstrike cooldown is crazy short.

if i was doing a TWC user to focus more on effectiveness rather than "lol i'm like raph from TMNT!" i'd use katars or shortswords as my main weapons with a nice set of handaxes for the heavy armor types. if you're going edged, otherwise it'd be maces/morningstars. 2 morning stars are slow as hell but you're a meatgrinder.

I prefer to go with two of the same weapon mainly rather than a gauche/sai (just for defense) so you get double the benefit from wspec, i just never thought the extra defense alone from the gauche/sai is enough to warrant using it.

Didn't mention maneuvers...wspec, and parry mastery are awesome and you double dip from both which is nice. A knockdown of choice can be useful, twin hammerfists is great for brawlers and i hamstring for edged.

If you go the small weapon route, crowd press can be amazing against caster mobs. With my sais it absolutely guts the targets ranged and bolt casting AS, and gives them a "partial immobilization", which prevents them from standing. Handy if you're up against something that your small weapons are weak against as i would knock them down with hammerfists, press, and then i could just attack without worrying about them standing up. in addition to the AS/DS benefits for using 2 second weapons.

if i remember correctly you need 3 second or less weapons to see real benefit from crowd press.

I forgot to ask, do TWC brawlers get both flares activating with hammerfist?

From personal experience, katars are the way to go. Example on critter wearing full plate:

[Upper Krag Slopes]
A haphazard pile of boulders sits here, yet it doesn't look as if the area is being cleared. Higher up the incline, a crushed helmet is wedged between two rocks, apparently cast aside because of its battered condition. You also see a krag dweller.
Obvious paths: southeast, southwest, west, northwest
>cman surge
You focus deep within yourself, searching for untapped sources of strength.
You feel a fair amount stronger.
>stance defensive
>
You feel recovered from your whirlwind flurry of strikes.
>
You are now in a defensive stance.
>stance defensive
You are now in a defensive stance.
>
A krag dweller pounds at you with its fist!
You skillfully interpose your katar between yourself and the incoming strike, deflecting it harmlessly to the side!
>stance offensive
You are now in an offensive stance.
>ms dwe
You concentrate intently, focusing all your energies.
You explode into a fury of strikes and ripostes, moving with a singular purpose and will!
You punch with a double-bladed vultite katar at a krag dweller!
The krag dweller barely dodges the attack!
You punch with a frosty blue rhimar katar at a krag dweller!
AS: +398 vs DS: +203 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +41 = +258
... and hit for 37 points of damage!
Strike pierces thigh!
The krag dweller is knocked to the ground!
You punch with a double-bladed vultite katar at a krag dweller!
AS: +408 vs DS: +144 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +86 = +372
... and hit for 68 points of damage!
Slash to the krag dweller's lower back!

** Your vultite katar flares with a burst of flame! **

The heat wafts over the krag dweller with little effect.
You punch with a frosty blue rhimar katar at a krag dweller!
AS: +398 vs DS: +134 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +52 = +338
... and hit for 52 points of damage!
Nice puncture to the abdomen, just missed vital organs!
You punch with a double-bladed vultite katar at a krag dweller!
AS: +408 vs DS: +134 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +30 = +326
... and hit for 55 points of damage!
Loud *crack* as the krag dweller's sternum breaks!
You punch with a frosty blue rhimar katar at a krag dweller!
AS: +398 vs DS: +124 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +49 = +345
... and hit for 53 points of damage!
Banged the krag dweller's right shin.
That'll raise a good welt.
You punch with a double-bladed vultite katar at a krag dweller!
AS: +408 vs DS: +124 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +79 = +385
... and hit for 60 points of damage!
Slash to the krag dweller's chest!
That heart's not broken, it's only scratched.
You punch with a frosty blue rhimar katar at a krag dweller!
AS: +398 vs DS: +113 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +15 = +322
... and hit for 52 points of damage!
Well aimed shot, punctures calf!

** Your rhimar katar glows intensely with a cold blue light! **

The intense cold contacts the krag dweller's hot skin with a sharp hiss!

Your series of strikes and ripostes leaves you winded and out of position.
Roundtime: 5 sec.
R>
The krag dweller cries out in agony as its skin shatters!
... 40 points of damage!
Good blow to chest!

[You have 26 kills remaining.]
The krag dweller collapses into a pile of rubble.

I don't think dual wielding blunt weapons works at the upper end levels. I feel that having a way to knock down a monster using a CMAN is important, and should supplement open ambush. With edged weapons, you can use hamstring. With katars, you can use twin hammerfist (which is better than hamstring), in addition to hamstring as a backup. Tackle sucks. Sais suck.

Are rapiers any good for dual wielding? Should I max dodge? (IE replace shield training with more dodge?)

BTW, which I had known more about stats. My inf sucks but warcries *mostly* work for me.

Advantages for MIU vs AS? Working on it now so may wing it but if anyone is around feel free to speak up.

I can fix it in a year anyway :D

Depending on your armor, go for the new Cunning Defense or Evasion Mastery.

Actually I train in keeping Twohanded, Shield use, armor use, edged weapon, two weapon combat, and brawling, I 2x twohanded, shield use, edged weapon, and two weapon combat, even Combat manuevers i 3x armor use and 2x brawling, Multi opponent combat I 1.5x it. and for TP I 2x that. I'm doing great with my warrior. I wear a heavy armor, if I use like a big behind Battle axe I'll have like 9rt each attack, if I use both short swords I'll get 5rts.I'm training brawling young so I won't have to be behind when I get voln fu and I have to take away some skills to train in brawling
