Has anyone been able to get past the firewall at work and play? I can backdoor into play.net and get to the <click to play> but the server blocks the connection to play.net server. Has anyone tried virtual pc? or connecting to their home computer and remote playing?

Virtual PC doesn't bypass your firewall unless you set it up to connect to another way (e.g. having the VPC go through a wireless connection).

Logmein.com FTW.

If you're serious about trying to circumvent your works firewall (and the risks involved), it sounds like your best bet would be to setup a relay on your home computer. I don't have any experience doing it but it's simple in concept, annoying in execution, a quick search reveals this program:
http://quozl.netrek.org/tcpxd/
(This is a linux app, but can potentially be used on windows, might be easier to find a native windows relay program)

you would run that on your home computer, then put a host file in your work computer to change the play.net domains (eaccess and um... I forget what the actual game is on, but you can look that up) to your home computer, you would also need to use something like Lich, setup to run on port 80 (http) and 443 (https) (so you can have one forward the login and the other the game), make sure your home's router allows those ports, and then forwards them to play.net ... latency will be about doubled, but you should be able to play like that.

It'll be tough if you're not very computer savvy, you might be able to get someone to help you through it, but like I said I don't have any experience w/ that application.

VNC would work, just gotta put it on a port their firewall doesn't block.

The easiest thing to do would probably be to allow remote connections to your home computer, and set up port forwarding on your router 443 => 3389. Then you play at home with all your shit set up already, and logging to your home box if you want it.

... hmm, that's probably way easier.

Yeah that's going to be the hard part, everything is blocked. I think i'm SOL. The building i'm in isnt conducive to wireless transmissions either, so thats out.

Can you make outgoing SSH connections? (Frequently, 'everything is blocked' doesn't include outgoing SSH)

I didn't really want to get that deep. Ain't worth getting fired over. If i could remotely log in, that's one thing, but i don't want get into heavily circumventing security. Thank you though.

At my old job, I connected a switchbox to my work computer and put it, along with my personal laptop, under my desk. I then had the option of getting my own ISP, using a cantenna and 'borrowing' an existing connection, or tethering my phone to my laptop. I made sure the switchbox had a physical button that was large that I could push with my foot because the keyboard shortcut was quirky.

yeah i had an aircard and an antenna in my cubicle. The connection was junk. I would have to move the antenna around every 10 minutes. Hunting was impossible.

When did you try that, things may have improved in your area since then.

regardless you're going to have to route through a device external to your work network, so whether it's VPN connection to a server, or RDP to your house, or the slick rerouting option that Cel mentioned. If your bandwidth is shitty, all options will probably make the game unplayable. If you're on these forums, or any website at work, port 80 is not blocked, and you can route port 80 to 3389 on your home router (or make Terminal Server listen on 80 if you're modem is directly connected to your PC).

Tabor was having this same issue at the hospital. I set up a VM on my home PC and set my router to forward port 80 to 3389 on the VM, and he's been getting re-addicted ever since.

I own the company, so playing at work is pretty damn easy.

I was able to search for a site that allowed me to download the launcher and SGE (I think it was Xygon's site) and used that to get in. This was about three years ago.

Even if he can download those, he'll have to connect on port 7900 with the SGE and then 10024 using stormfront (some other uncommon port for the wizard).

It doesnt sound like the downloading is the issue rather the connection to the game server to actually play. Otherwise you could just load up a thumb drive with all your game files and just plug it into your work comp and go from there.

I am surrounded by lead and concrete, there is zero signal. This is worth a shot.

just to preempt a potential follow up question, on your home PC: right click My Computer --> Properties --> then depending on your version of windows, there will either be a remote tab, or a link to "remote settings" or something... make sure you enable remote connections for whatever user you want to connect as (it's safer to not use the Administrator account.)

then your router is probably accessible at http://192.168.0.1 and shouldn't be too tricky to set up port forwarding.. If you have a modem hooked straight up to the PC, then your ISP is assigning the IP and you won't need to do the forwarding of ports.

I recommend using no-ip.com to register a hostname and using their dynamic update client if you have a dynamic IP, so you can always connect...

Sorry if this is too dumbed down, just wanted to help before you get stuck. Let me know if you need more assistance.

Whether using VNC, an SSH tunnel, or whatever, you're doing the same thing in concept and have the exact same likelihood of being fired if/when your employers find you out.

Yes, set up an SSH server at home and then open up an SSH tunnel on the SGE port and the actual gameplay port.

Or... as someone else suggested... try working at work. At any respectable workplace, you get fired for not doing that.

Yes, set up an SSH server at home and then open up an SSH tunnel on the SGE port and the actual gameplay port.

There are a few programs out there you can get that redirect traffic at an app level for you to your SSH tunnel. I've used Freecap and SocksCap. You configure the app with your SSH settings, then launch whatever program you want to tunnel through it's interface and it directs the traffic appropriately.

oh shit hang on...laughing...so...hard.....
