View Full Version : Wireless Router Recommendations

My shitty Linksys router is bottlenecking my connection (runs really fast when I bypass it, runs like shit when I plug into the router), and I'm tired of my wired setup anyway and wanna switch it all over to wireless, and could use some advice on a good wireless route to get, I guess in the $60-100 range.

The ISP tech guy recommended a Belkin or Netgear router, but I've read really shitty reviews for both on Newegg. Read some great reviews too, so I figured I'd ask here and get your opinions on a good reliable fast wireless router.

YOU HELP NOW!

EDIT:
I'M LOOKING TO SPEND AROUND $60-100

Having recently just bought a Netgear WNDR3700, it's been an exceptional improvement over a Linksys WRT54G. I got a pretty good deal on it, forget how much I paid but it was no where near what I'm seeing on a quick search now.. I think I paid about $100, maybe even $80, it popped up on slickdeals.

I was having some issues going up a flight of stairs, and through about 4 walls across a small house, with occasional disconnects, and "tiney" VoIP calls. My issues are pretty much gone w/ the N router. I haven't seen it bottleneck me yet, connections over the wire are noticeably faster (even with a G device talking to an N device).

Drew... he said how much he was looking to spend.

I just bought this:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11471733

It is working far better than the Microsoft, and Linksys ones I was using.

But, it might not be in your price range. How about you post up what you are looking to spend?

Rumor has it that Cisco Small Business stuff is pretty nice.

I had a linksys N wireless which worked great for my laptop. I could take it anywhere in the house or yard and the connection wouldn't degrade. I then thought it'd be great to get my desktop wireless also, so got a Linksys Wireless N adapter. Worked great as long as the desktop was in the same room as the router, which wasn't really practical. In the room I wanted to actually use the desktop, ~50 feet, 3 walls, away, I got practically nothing. Using a Netgear router, still with my Linksys adapter, again, I got a great connection with the laptop, anywhere in the house, but I still get practically nothing with the desktop. Anyway, where I'm going with this is that I'm thinking that perhaps both routers are comparable, so you may not see much difference switching, but the Linksys adapters suck.

Methais

All my stuff is in the back room, maybe 25-30' from where I'm set up, so there will be a bit of space and a wall or two in between. Right now I just have some really long CAT-5 cables running and it's annoying.

Also I'm reading that PS3s don't work very well with Wifi N, and that you have to do some configuring to get it to work right.

One more thing...is wifi really that much worse for gaming than a wired connection? Other than trolling here, probably 90% of my internets is used for gaming, usually stuff like shooters or fighting games.

Would I be better off just sticking with wired for gaming, or is the difference negligible these days?

When my network was wired I used Cisco and Linksys. I had no problems with my wireless G Netgear router until I upgraded to an Airport Extreme wireless N. I'm thinking that could be out of your price range but I'm only guessing. Every product on Newegg is going to have some bad reviews. I feel safe if approx 70% of reviewers rate it 4 stars or more; however what you want to spend is going to narrow it down further so for serious suggestions you're going to have to put up some kind of a budget.

This is true, but I only tried to do a wireless PS3 when I had satellite internet, so I can't tell you how much of the problem I had was from wifi N and how much from the general suckiness of satellite internet.

I have a hunch that other than GS, you and I don't play many of the same games, but with my laptop, I've never had a problem with games. The desktop tends to lose the connection and get laggy connections. I tend to watch a lot of movies and tv shows online and with my laptop, I have no problems with latency. With my desktop, the video hangs up and slows, and sometimes whole sentences have passed before the person's mouth even begins to move. Makes for a bit of surreal entertainment, much like this goatse thread. Anyway, I guess it would be better for someone who has a successful wireless desktop to give you advice.

Really going to have to take this with a grain of salt, because I have no idea if any of this is within your price range but...

I have my PS3 hard wired to the router, so I can't comment there, but desktop gaming, games like L4D2 have no issues wirelessly, and I had no issues with GS4 when I played. Although I only had minor issues with gaming over G, all gaming issues went away with N. I've got a handful of other routers within range of my house, but I don't think many are N, so it may be just an artifact of having a suddenly clean spectrum to use.

Don't forget that when you give us the budget, you should factor in any upgrades to network adapters. I'm using a Linksys refurb N adapter on my laptop (PCMCIA), and a Linksys N USB 2.0 adapter on my desktop, no issues with either.

I have two of these. No WiFi blade available for the 4006 chassis, though, SUCKAH.

(Also, who has a 4006 without the 4323-L3 blade!?)

Honestly, I don't think we can help Methais until he gives us a ballpark he's willing to spend. Otherwise this is all just speculation.

Would I be better off just sticking with wired for gaming, or is the difference negligible these days?Depends on the gaming IMO.

I was wireless G (nothing fancy) with a distance of 10-15 feet with no obstructions and I noticed hiccups during FPS gaming.

Something like that is a HUGE deal to anyone serious about it.

However, it'd be relatively minor for Stacraft or even WoW.

That was a number of years ago so maybe the technology has gotten better. There's also routers that prioritize packets so you can look into that too.

I hate hate hate NEtgear.

I go D-link all the way, but I don't know your price range, so who knows how good that'd be.

On the whole wireless gaming thing, it depends on environment too. The last 4 years or so I've been living in high traffic apartment buildings (first in Boston andthen NYC), and wireless was nearly impossible to game on. NYC might have been the shitty netgear router my sister left in the apartment, but when you have 6-7 3+ bar networks in range, shit gets fucccccked.

In his defense.. he may be interested in gaming but not a gamer.

I do enough gaming to where it would be probably the biggest factor on whether or not I go wireless, so if wireless still hasn't un-gayed itself for gaming (mainly fighting and FPS games) I'll probably stick with wired for the most part.

You do still have the option of going wired with a wireless router though right? Having to plug my iPhone into my PC to download apps over 10MB is pretty annoying, for example.

The solution to that is to get with the times and use the 5 GHz band.

Maybe so. But while we're on the topic of getting with the times, check out the nifty quote feature we have, for those times when you want to quote a post.

You do still have the option of going wired with a wireless router though right? There are some wireless options that are strictly wireless.. but you have to search for them to find them. It's not a common attribute.

As for the gaming.. I STRONGLY recommend getting one from Best Buy and trying it out for 25 days, then return it and get your money back. That's the only sure fire way to know.

However.. I think you're better off going with a wired connection.

The hiccups I experienced (Unreal Tournament era) were just little spikes in the connection. Nothing major.. but it's VERY noticeable when you're pinging 30ms to the server.

We recently picked up a Netgear wireless for the oldest to be able to use her netbook. It seems to have a damn good connection through the entire house & the back yard.

Just asked the husband & he's had no problem with the ps3 either but it's not very far from the router.

We kept the desktops wired, all in all I think the Netgear one has done just fine for the 80-ish we paid for it.
