I don't think England has the goaltending to go all the way. But if Rooney shows up and keeps his temper under control who knows.

If the performance of both teams during the recent friendly's is any indication, it really is anyones game. With all the pressure on England.

I'm going with 3-2 USA. But that isn't really a prediction, just wishful thinking.

I do think they'll both advance out of the group though.

On another note... I really wish FIFA had banned those fucking horns.

Asrial

I think the takeaway on this is...

- The US really needs to come out firing to prevent early goals.

- The US DID get lucky. I won't deny that. However, they also got UNLUCKY with that post shot.

- The most important thing is that the 'vaunted' England team scored one goal.. an early one in fact. I think the US team did EXCEPTIONALLY well.

Asile
06-12-2010, 04:32 PM
I went to the FIFA website for a score update, the US goalkeeper (I forget his name) was chosen as the "man of the game"... I think by people visiting the site, but it seemed like he did a pretty awesome job.

Nieninque
06-12-2010, 04:32 PM
Have to say I'm disappointed.
USA didnt look like scoring, even when they scored, so to only come away with a point is a let down. Passing was shit. SWP on the left wing is fucking stupid. He is so one-footed it's painful. Heskey cant score to save his life and although his support play is good, that's just not enough for a centre forward. Bleargh

That was horrible to watch. I hope they give Green another chance, imagine being him heh.
The rest of the game I thought was damn enjoyable though. Both sides played a good offensive (not stellar by any means, I must reiterate that).
I'm growing my beard as advised in support.
Once again I've been bitten by the cup bug.

I did laugh when I heard viewers watching one of our countries' major stations had to watch a terribly placed Hyundai advertisement within the first three minutes of the game, therefore missing the first goal.

I'm not certain why they started Heskey. Isn't Defoe on the bench?

England played pretty poorly, and will definitely turn it around for their next two games. The talent is there. I thought that the USA had a decent start (aside from that soft goal). The US did seem to let up a bit towards the second half, which almost cost them, and will cost them if they continue that trend in future games.

Couldn't agree more. I hate diving. However, I can appreciate other aspects of the game. I've found that watching the Premier league, there is way less diving than in La liga and Serie A. Sad part of the game. They have been trying to crack down on it though and dropped some heavy suspensions for diving. I think Fabregas got suspended for a while I think this year.

I like how of all the examples in those two videos, only two divers were rewarded by cards against the supposed interferers. The most infamous is obviously the red card against Motta, but the Korean one, the red card was given for shoving another player, which you can't do, whether he dives to the ground or not.

In all the other examples, all cards given were to the actual divers themselves. Hell, two yellow cards for diving were given to the Germans today, and they were a lot more legit than anything in these videos.

OK, it's true that the reason you are world-beaters at them is because no-one else plays them, but still...

You had me til you threw this in.

Our best player is Landon Donovan. He's 5'8, 145lbs. Pele, who was also 5'8, 150lbs or so was the best player in the world and is probably the best recognized.

Thierry Henry is 6ft 2, Christiano Ronaldo is 6ft 1ish, Wayne Rooney is 5ft 10 and they all weigh about 165-175lbs.

In America we have Football (American), Baseball, Hockey, and Basketball as our 4 main sports. We consistantly win more, or among the most, medals than anyone in the Olympics, both the Summer and Winter.

Our Colleges are called Football factories. Our average player easily compares to the average Soccer player that comes out of Brazil, Argentina, the UK, etc. I'd dare say we're far superior in this regard, but it's not my point. My point is we could shift our focus if we cared about soccer more. Maybe someday we will.

I don't know how they rate speed in soccer. I googled something about 10-20 yard speed. Lets use 20 yards as an example and I'll drop a few American athletes names and stats in.

Chris Johnson is 5ft 11inches, 200lbs, and runs a 4.24 40 yard dash. Thats a 2.12 second 20 yard run.

Adrian Pederson is 6ft 2inches, 220lbs, and runs a 4.38 40 yard dash. Thats 2.19 second 20 yard dash.

Lebron James is 6ft 8 inches, 250lbs, he ran a 40 yard dash for fun in 4.4 seconds. Thats 2.2 seconds at 20 yards. He's got the best dunks some people have ever seen, do you think Rooney or one of them could outjump him for a header?

These are just a couple of examples. They are bigger, faster, and stronger than the best soccer players. I realize that soccer is a finesse game. but I respond to any rebuttals about our athletes finesse by mentioning our hockey players or guys like Lebron James dunk a basketball. I think our sport athletes talents would translate to the finesse aspect just fine.

To sum this all up, you're god damn lucky we haven't embraced soccer.

Pele was an awesome player. Many rate him as the worlds best player, many rate Maradona /spit as the world's best player. I like the way you rate him as a US player, though. Good plan. Aside from the fact he is Brazillian. Minor detail, I know. But what's a few thousand miles between friends, huh?

TLDR

To sum up Geijon's comment:

America's best athletes don't play soccer, yet we are still competitive enough to make it to the WC.

Yeah the diving sucks. I'll compare it to the LA-Boston game last night. If those guys were playing on a cement court, they would never dive.

We're only in the WC because of CONCACAF, IE, we only have to qualify against North American teams, including the Caribbean. If they made our group all of the Americas, it's doubtful we would even make the WC, but when Mexico is your only competition and the top 3 go in, it's hard not to qualify.

That might say more about the quality of the Americas rather than the US's lack thereof.

Shouldn't we have a bunch of illegals on our team to properly embody the current populace?

Francisco Torres and Herculez Gomez both have mixed Mexican American heritage. Many players have mixed heritage from all over which does represent America accurately.

Oh wow thanks Back, I couldn't possibly be fucking around and I appreciate you taking the opportunity to take something that's clearly stupid and take it seriously. Your contributions are both encouraged and sought after.

So you think if they merged concacaf and conmebol (8 total entry slots) you don't think we could make it in the top 8? You're joking right? There are only two legitimately better teams than us in conmebol and we are the best team in concacaf (unless we are playing in Mexico City).

EDIT: You could place the US in any Federation in the world and they would qualify.

Mmmm, I was thinking 3 and 3 for some reason, thinking there were 6 spots. And no, I don't think we would qualify in the top 6 - Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay have all been better, Chile is eh, Paraguay eh, Mexico is about level with us.

Either way your comment was way off, we don't only qualify because we're in concacaf. Like I said you could put us in any federation and we'd qualify in it.

LOL...dont get me wrong, I like Brazil, they are every English football fan's second team...but there is no way in this world that Dunga's version of the Brazil team was number one. Nuh uh.

Spain are the best team in the world and will be world champions come Sunday.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if the Dutch won. Arjen Robben somehow always manages to have a great game when it's really important. That being said, Spain/Barcelona should win. I just wish Torres was playing better. Must be that new haircut he got or something...

Holy shit, we have had this discussion before. Fifa rankings include friendlies and all sorts of shit. They are not a reflection of who is the best team in the world, just a reflection of FIFA's borked rankings.

Do you honestly believe that Portugal are the third best team in the world? Give me a break. Italy 5th best? Lawls.
