Do you have access to a constant full-wizard spellup? Open.
No? Sniping.
Being caught in the open with a bow and arrow sucks. Especially when you're caught in RT when the room swarms. Double especially when you're up against foes with high CS. Triple especially when you're in a spell burst area and cant tank up on spells.
I prefer sniping to open firing; however, I've seen both pulled off effectively.
If you fire openly you'll want heavier armor (up to MBP) which gives you more damage/crit protection than lighter armor and the added benefit of being more resistant to spiritual magic (CS vs. TD).
If you snipe you can move to lighter crit padded armor and using hiding as a huge add to defense (cant cast/hit what they dont see). This is a harder path to follow when you're young simply because you're still building hiding/stalking ranks.
My rogue is sniping at level 91. Formerly open archer/ohe and prior to that ohe/shield.

Can any what post what a sniper training should look like? For a ranger
2x Ranged
2x Ambush
2x Perception
2x Hiding
With Ranger you're privy to cheaper magic (spells) to learn thus making an open archer more attractive path.
I would say sniping would be more for rogues.
Rangers and rogues can both learn 100 circle which is really important for TD.
Rangers have spells to enhance sniping.
Rogues can wear plate for open aiming.
Take from that what you will.

I wasn't ever able to get up to 2x ambush until much later (even .75x in dodge), 1.3x-1.5x always did me great, but I guess sighted bows also helped.
Sniping is insanely effective in warcamps, it's a thought if the OP is going GoS.
This all said I fixskilled out of it last month and haven't thought twice.

Just anectodally from a rogue friend that I hunt with who also (and still) snipes. He would get wrecked up in the open much worse than I would, and he was in MBP. Solo'ing he depends on sniping to live.
Yeah there are risks both ways.
I'm thinking of Aryiel who I used to stalk and be amazed watching her annihilate everything in OTF (when it was highest hunt ground) from open in plate. It looked almost unfair.

IF you have to choose between the ambush and the perception, (so you are 2x in one and 1x in the other) perception would be the way to go, but... will this adversely affect your ability to stay hidden (will you pop out more after you shoot)? I just ask because I am also thinking about mixing things up a bit and trying a pure stealth build (with ewave, I think every rogue should have ewave).
My sniper uses ewave a lot (hence why he wears FGB.)
Ewave takes the punch out of most swarms unless they are immune to elemental magic (like the constructs in OTF).

I don't believe ambush has anything to do with staying hidden; that is purely based on hiding skill. It only helps you aim from hiding.

Which you shouldn't really bother to damage with arrows anyway.

rangers excel at open sniping, wear augmented chain if you wanna cast more and hauberk if not. End of story. Do not ambush at lvl 80 with a ranger what a waste of tps. Also you don't need ambush. X2 ranged x2 perception. When I sold that ranger he raped no reason to fuck with his build.

yeah he still does was just curious if hiding was a good option

How I ran that dude was if it breathed it got an arrow in the eye, if it was undead it got spiked, and finally if it was immune to magic or something like a construct it got left the fuck alone. Try to get haste imbeds man and use a composite bow, 1 second eye shots are awesome, also when your in the ducts dude you need to kill gremlocks asap they will fuck you up with their manuever. Other than that you should have a good time in OTF with him.
