Spell Description Update - Picking Enhancement (403) & Disarm Enhancement(404) · on 3/31/2004 2:37:10 PM 583


The following spell descriptions have been updated on the website to provide you with more detailed information:

Picking Enhancement (403)

Duration: 30 seconds +1 second per level; stackable

Type: Bonus

Picking Enhancement assists the spell's target in manual and magical lockpicking attempts. Success factors include caster level, Pick Locks skill, Minor Elemental spell ranks, and the target's Dexterity bonus.

If the caster does not have personal knowledge of the spell (for example, casting it from a scroll), the bonus is reduced by 10% to 50%, depending on the caster's ability to activate the item with the spell. Further, casting the spell on a target other than the caster results in an additional 50% loss to the bonus. In a situation where both penalties are applicable, the item-cast penalty is applied first, and the non-self-cast penalty is applied to the result of that.

At no time will the spell provide a bonus greater than the target's Pick Locks skill.

Additional casts will extend the duration of the spell (stackable), but do not increase the bonus.

Disarm Enhancement (404)

Duration: 30 seconds +1 second per level; stackable

Type: Bonus

Disarm Enhancement assists the target in manual and magical disarming attempts. Success factors include the caster's level, Disarm Traps skill, Minor Elemental spell ranks, and the target's Intuition bonus (if the character is not currently working on a trap) or Dexterity bonus (if the character has found a trap recently, but has yet to disarm it).

If the caster does not have personal knowledge of the spell (for example, casting it from a scroll), the bonus is reduced by 10% to 50%, depending on the caster's ability to activate the item with the spell. Further, casting the spell on a target other than the caster results in an additional 50% loss to the bonus. In a situation where both penalties are applicable, the item-cast penalty is applied first, and the non-self-cast penalty is applied to the result of that.

At no time will the spell provide a bonus greater than the target's Disarm Traps skill.

With this change, 404 no longer helps aim with ranged.

I love the change... except for this:

Most rogues only know a limited amount of spells... does this mean that a wizard will get more of a bonus than my rogue?

I do hope it plays a VERY small part of the equation.

Besides which a rogue who has a Pick Locks skill poorer than a wizard's ME ranks should be opening beers not boxes.

Exactly.

My bard is going to get no bonus from using 404 or 403 because he has no lockpicking or disarming skill.

Picking should be done by those who chose that path, not by those that are able to with a spell and zero to negligible skill.

404 helps with aiming ranged weapons. I see no evidence anywhere to suggest that they changed that with this update. A small part of the bonus for 404 has always been number of MnE spells known, so I'm not sure how drastically the effect is going to change.

I hope this makes it possible to pick my own boxes with 2.5x pick/disarm and lore, instead of having to 3x to open Plane 2+ boxes.

When I revised the spells in 1998 or so, there was no bonus for spells known in the circle. This came sometime after that change.

The rest of the spell description looks exactly like it was when I revised them back then. I'm not sure what this changed.

Oh, one other thing I do see changed is the "10% to 50%" effectiveness. It was a flat 50% previously.
