View Full Version : The Perfect Job?

With all the discussion about education, making money and lifestyles, I'm wondering.

What would your perfect job be and how much money would you like to earn to live comfortably. I'm not talking about a unattainable dream job or unrealistic salary. Something you feel like your capable of.

Video Game Design/Programmer/Tester

Ideally around 100k/year would keep me happy.

I wanted to be a pediatrician entering college. That was my perfect job, and while technically it's still attainable, I don't think I can make the cut anymore. I think average salary for that job is around 160k a year in my area, not sure. Good hours, working with kids was something I liked doing, and I probably would have felt like I was contributing something to society instead of just being intent on filling my own pockets.

Oh well. Current career path is something in finance, if I ever graduate. Hoping to work for a few years (just for experience, and enough to pay off loans and what not) before grad school, and finding a place after grad school that starts around 80k.

Mattress Tester, or lab rat for sleep disorders. 100 grand a year would be sweet.

Yeah I like to sleep, and getting paid for it would be killer at this moment.

I'd like to be a security consultant for various corporations. Basically hacking them, then telling them how you did it and how to fix it and getting paid for it. I wouldn't mind be a tech guy for the NSA/CIA either.

I'd ideally like something around 75-150k a year.

I want to be a politician who isn't corrupt, hasn't sold his soul to the devil, and so on and so forth. Mayor of Buffalo is my middle-term goal (Tony-boy has to go!), eventually shooting for "The Honorable Senator from NY". It only ends there because there's this stupid thing about people who weren't born here not being allowed to be President.

Now, my ultimate slack off job (which a politician CAN be, but I wouldn't be approaching it that way) would be something involving lying in the sun on some grass in my bare feet. I guess I can keep that as a hobby, as a politician, cause I don't know anyone who would pay me to do that.

Money I don't really care about. I'm thinking of giving much of it to charity anyways. One of the revolutionary (alright, not revolutionary, but it would be nice to see it put in practice) is, as a politician, living at the mean income of my constituents, and donating the rest to the greater good.

The only problem I see with that idea is that politicians are expected to have a certain demeanor and attire. If I showed up in beat up jeans and a Bills t-shirt, I don't think I'd be taken very seriously.

My dream jobs are kind of corny, but I would love to either work for a non profit helping underprivileged communities, or find a political leader who I really believed in and get a job, any job, on their staff and help them in any way to make the country I live in a better place.

I guess the hard part is finding a politician I really truly believe in.:(

Somehow, I think there are any number of lobbyists who would be more than happy to pay you to do just that...in exchange for your vote, of course. ;)

I'm gonna have a policy:

Anyone can donate money to me, unless I disagree with their fundamental, core philosophies (like the Klan, or something). But, that doesn't guarantee my vote. Not by a long shot. Everyone counts as one person. Corporations have no say, except for individuals representing a corporation. However, the CEO of Ford wouldn't have more of a say than the average person. If a corporation wants to endorse/fund/lobby me, more than half the company has to sign off on it, from the belt jockeys on up. Anyone can bring a petition to me with proper support for it. The guidelines I'm thinking of right now, from a mayoral standpoint, would be 50 people signing a petition, to get time with me. It's all complicated, but I'm working on it. The one thing I realize is that it is hard to be elected without being funded, the other thing I realize is, as Pink Floyd says, money, it's a crime. The good thing is I know a few people who are good economy types, good fundraising types, who can stay above it all. I hope.

There was something in Kennedy's Profiles In Courage which I think applies even more today. Kennedy was talking about constituents, but I think it can be applied to lobby groups: Namely that politicians should not be there to act merely as the constituents want them to. Several Southern Senators who spoke out against slavery were given as examples as when one cannot reasonably listen to the constituents, even though they put you in power (or, in the case of lobby groups, funded you). There are times when a public official should be voted not because he'll repeat everything YOU want verbatim, but because he stands for similar ideals and goals, but thinks and makes decisions on his own.

My dream job?

I dunno exactly what. I always thought it was paramedic, but I'm not so sure I could handle all the negatives.

Anyway, it'd involve problem solving and working hard. I kind of like doing customer service, because it doesn't matter how pissed off people are when they come to me, they ALWAYS leave happier.

My dream job sounds pretty corny but I really just want to help the under-privalidged people in the world. I couldn't care less about money, it doesn't interest me at all, I'm a socialist. Red to the core. I'd have loved to have been around with Marx and Engels.

I just want to make peoples lives better, in whatever way I can. I'm not totally selfless but I really care about my fellow man. I want to educate people, I want to help those on the edge. Maybe I just want to be a hero deep down.

Hm... my dreams have fluctuated my whole life. It all depends. Each dream job would keep some aspect of me really, really happy. So I'll just list 'em all!

Book store owner - No one can compete with Barnes & Noble right now, but I doubt there's a job out there that I'd like to keep going back to for the rest of my life, except owning my own book store. You know I used to daydream about being locked into the library overnight, when I was a kid?

Lawyer - Oo, I love to argue. I love to debate. And I love to win. I have some aptitude in this area already, since when my mother went to law school, I went with her to the classes a lot of the time and even sometimes read her homework. I think I might like to be a family law attorney. I know there's nothing more heart-rending than some of the stuff that goes on in that sort of court, but it would make me feel really good to crush some of the basest dirtbags our society holds. Plus, the money is good! On the down side, I'd have little to no free time in which to spend that money.

Zoologist - In the field, of course. I think even though it'd be supremely uncomfortable next to the life I've lead so far, it's been my longest-lived dream to travel down to the Amazon and study giant otters. This, too, would erode my free time to nothing, but I think I wouldn't mind so much with this one, as long as I got to be with the animals.

Well, actually, I'm gonna stop there... Those are really the top three. Money wouldn't matter so much, as long as I had enough of it for one big trip out of the country (or back to America in the case of the zoologist thing) every year.

As it is, I'm about to get out of school with a linguistics degree, with a translating job at the ready. Shows you what good dreams are, eh? Blame it on lack of money.

I'm in school for my ideal job... sports writer :D For me there will be nothing better then getting free passes to watch sports, go into the locker room and interview the players, and then write a story about it. Both sports and writing are two of my biggest hobbies. In a perfect world I'll eventually get on the radio, Sports Radio 610 WIP in Philadelphia (Anyone around probably knows it) but that's reaching high.. I have a good voice for it and figure I could be entertaining. Money isn't all that important to me as long as I'm doing something I love and can get by relatively easy.

Sounds a tad like my story. Im working towards my dream job, which is to be a lawyer. I plan on going into my own private practice, making nothing under 100k a year, and doing some pro-bono on the side. Perhaps taking a sabitical every now and again and doing the "Street Lawyer" thing.

Before I came to school my ideal job was always teaching. But after working with kids for 4 years in high school I decided my patience only stretches so far. So now ideally my dream job is a architectural designer. Not so much doing cad plans and detail work which I do now. But more of the actual design function. I always liked art and architecture to me is a form of art that the public if forced to confront. Although if I ever go back and get my masters I could potentially teach architectural studios which are all about design work.

Miss X, if you want to move to the States, become a U.S. citizen, and fight with me in politics, you're more than welcome to. I'd be flying under the Democrat banner, but believe me, you don't want to try and enter politics being a member of the Socialists.

As for ideal, ideal jobs - I'd love to do something in the music business. Anything that would pay me to go to sleazy clubs and listen to bands would be hot. Talent scout, yeah, that's it.

Like Hulkein, I would love to be in sports broadcasting. My hero Van Miller (the Bills play-by-play guy) retired this off season, and Murph'll probably hold his position down for the next 10 years or so, at the very least, so I have 10 years to work into that field/make my decision somehow. Yeah.

I want to be able to have my own darkroom at home and print, and send my prints off to a gallery, and have my checks mailed to me.

Specifically (and realistically) I plan to help my best friend start up her gallery when she gets done obtaining her Masters in NYC. She plans to move back to Phoenix and hopefully open her own gallery. In exchange for helping her out, I will be allowed to show my stuff there, for free. That way I can wake up whenever I want, walk barefoot to "work" in my darkroom in the backyard and start developing negs and printing...and doing so in just my underwear if I feel like it!

I don't know what my salary would be, as long as I'm not starving on the streets I'm sure I would be happy.

Own a bookstore. I know in these days of Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble, a little nook of a bookstore where people come to browse, buy, read and discuss books is really a fantasy. However, that is mine.

Teaching is in my blood also. I have thought maybe after my daughter is off to college, I would volunteer to teach adults to read. Volunteer work appeals to me. What you get in return is so rewarding.

As far as money goes... who wouldn't like to be rich? As far as reality goes... I'm happy being able to pay my bills and have a little left for a rainy day.

Then there is that 'Great American Novel' that I'm writing. Will it be finished next year? Will it be finished in ten years? Who knows? I am writing a book... been working on it a couple of years. My daughter will do the editing. And if it never gets published, I would still have written my book.

I'm on my way to my dream job. I want to be on the fringe of the latest in innovation, in a managerial role. Development of systems to de-skill and otherwise eliminate labor requirements, use of technology to allow a more synchronized system of global commerce, and so forth. I'd like to make around 750k to a million a year, and I'm almost a sixth of the way there salary wise, and maybe 15-20 years from getting there position wise if I continue at my pace.

Miss X, I'm sorry I can never share your views on socialism. I believe in the fundamental principle that all people are equal under the eyes of the law. But to tell me that I can carry around a 24 hour beeper, work 50+ hours a week in office and another 5-10 at all kinds of odd hours, that I should not enjoy a tremendous deal of extra luxury as compared to a janitor, I don't buy it. I believe in earning your keep. Don't go to school, don't expect the system to pay for your stupidity. Don't want to work, then don't expect people who do to pay for you to live just like them.

If its your dream job to do something that doesnt pay well, don't hold it against other people who have money oriented goals. You can't have the cake and eat it too.

I think my dream job would be becoming partners with my cousin in his company. He's doing really well and he does basically what I would think I can enjoy doing. Once I get my EE degree and pick up an MCSE and a CCNA... I don't see any problem with me doing just about anything I want in the Network Engineering field.

Once I got my feet well planted in that area, I'd probably go back to school to learn physical therapy or even just get a certification or something to become a masseur. I'd work at a spa or something in my freetime... and it's a really handy ability to have. ;) I'm a natural at it so I think it wouldn't be difficult for me to pick up on the finer points of the arts of massage.

Oh, and I also would like to be filty stinking rich thanks.

We gave up a very successful business to do this, one we weren't happy in. One that kept my husband from watching his kids grow up, one that the only good thing about it was the money. Money isn't everything, we have much less now, but the rewards are that as a family we came out stronger.
