Tropical Storm Agatha swept across Central America yesterday, bringing torrential rain that killed more than 100 people and opened a 60m-deep sinkhole in Guatemala (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/guatemala) City which reportedly swallowed up a three-storey building.

The first named storm of the 2010 Pacific season dumped more than a metre of rain in parts of Guatemala, also hitting El Salvador (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/el-salvador) and Honduras (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/honduras). At least 113 people were reported killed, with around 50 missing in Guatemala alone as rescue workers searched through the rubble.

The 30m-diameter sinkhole opened up in a northern district of Guatemala City, with residents blaming the rains and substandard drainage systems. Local reports said one man was killed when the building was swallowed. In 2007, three people died when a similar sinkhole appeared in the same area.

Guatemala was the worst affected country, with a confirmed death toll of 92, although that is likely to rise when rescuers reach remote villages. Almost 100,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. Nine people were confirmed killed in El Salvador and 12 in Honduras.

"I've got no one to help me. I watched the water take everything," Carlota Ramos told Reuters outside her mud-swamped brick house in Amatitlán, a town near the Guatemalan capital.

Wow. That totally looks Photoshopped (the actual picture), but it probably isn't. Weird.

ALTERNATE POST: "Wow, what's Tisket doing in Guatemala?"

Holy fuck. No wonder ancient peoples thought the Earth had a soul and punished them relentlessly... hopefully they find some good ancient gold loot or secret ruins or some shit.

Is it even possible for a tropical storm to do this? Or is the storm the straw that broke the camel's back, and I'm just supposed to believe a tropical storms create giant sinkholes?

Please advise.

It wasn't the storm that created this, it was likely ready to happen and the storm just finally tipped it.

The new weapon that the US has is working great! Earthquakes, sinkholes, tsunamis, oil leaks!

That shit really creeps me out. You can see into the earth. INTO. The. EARTH.

I think land that stays land and not air makes me comfortable, that's what I think.

In the nat geo article they responded that they don't know what to fill the hole with. That's ridiculous. I can think of a million things I would put into that hole if it were mine.

2nd on that list would be getting the entire city a really shitty high as stan has suggested.

It's a sanitation departments dream come true. ... Do the people who owned the building that fell in now officially own the sink hole? Cause I've got to imagine a 30 story dump is worth more than a 3 story office building.

Mind boggling to me. My apartment building is a little over 30 stories high and it's one of the tallest in Cambridge. You can see it's glow bacons (that's for you, Nachos) on the top from many places around the Boston area.

That is one deep mother fucking hole, right there.

I vote they fill it with fire and build the new capital around it. Then when ambassadors come to visit, they can kick them into the hole a la 300.
