Hey all. I've been playing on and off since the "AOL charging you per hour and wracking up a $400 bill playing gemstone 3" days. I'm back again but as usual I just can't figure out what class I want to play! I always dabble in a bunch of classes and then quit because I can't choose what I want to stick with.

My highest character ever was a 14 halfling war that I made when trip first came out. Very fun character but of course trip is now a maneuver and not quite as fun as it was before.

So far in my time back I've played a 5th train dwarf sword and board war, 5th train halfling claidh/lance war, and am now playing a 6th train cast hunting empath.

I feel like I want to stick to empath because not only do I get some interesting hunting spells, but I also get to heal people and that so far has been both fun and extremely rewarding (people tip ridiculously high, at least compared to years past where I've played empath characters).

I'm pretty content with this character but sorcerer has always been really appealing to me.

So my main question is, is Sorcerer significantly more/less fun than a casting hunter empath? I've only gotten experience using mana disrupt over the years, which is pretty fun of course, but that's the extent of my sorcerer play time. Right now I'm running around insta-killing hobs and/or lesser orcs with bone shatter, wither looks really interesting, but I'm wondering if sorc gets even more stuff that lets you change up the pace and have a good time hunting.

I have a few side questions too.

1. How do you get on the black amunet? I thought it was rub amulet, pull amulet, but that just seems to turn the amunet off, unless there's just no one talking on it.

2. I'm getting a ton of money as an empath, what should I spend it on?

3. People seem to be looking for specific gems, what for? Alchemy? I haven't looked into that yet.

4. As a caster empath, should I take arcane symbols? I don't know if I'll want to use scrolls one day as I've never had a high level character.

5. As a caster empath, I know my main lore should be manipulation, and for secondary lore I've been taking telepathy. Is that good, or should my secondary be transformation since I do want to heal here and there (plus it looks like it helps with empathic assault, which I guess will be my main spell when I get it?)

6. I noticed someone talking about their PvP records vs rogues. Has PvP become a more popular thing now? I know shattered is out but what about in the regular realm?

Thanks for any info. It appears a lot of the sites that used to contain good gs4 info are now lost, so I've gotten just about all my info from this site and krakiipedia.

I have a sorcerer and an empath. I think at lower levels it was more fun to play the empath, but after level 30ish, the sorcerer became funner. That's just my opinion though.

1. How do you get on the black amunet?

Try typing "ESP help" in game for information on the amunet.

2. I'm getting a ton of money as an empath, what should I spend it on?

Whatever you want. Weapons, fluff, whatever.

3. People seem to be looking for specific gems, what for? Alchemy? I haven't looked into that yet.

Alchemy sometimes, but usually for the adventure guilds. If you haven't looked into those, you should check it out.

4. As a caster empath, should I take arcane symbols? I don't know if I'll want to use scrolls one day as I've never had a high level character.
Entirely up to you but my empath doesn't use scrolls very often, if that helps any.

Not that I've noticed.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Thanks for the info :)

Another thing I just remembered, it seems that people do mass buffs much more often now. A while back, my understanding was that you could get ~4 hours of a buff, and then if you got any more it would roll over back to none. So if you had 4 hours and got another 30 minute cast, you would now have 30 minutes. Dreamlock will come in and do mass blurs/guards really often, certainly more than once every 4 hours. Did they change it so you'll get your 4 hours and if you get more, it just pushes it back up to 4 max? Does it not roll over anymore?

No rollover anymore

Interesting. Is there any way to see time remaining on buffs?

Lich is amazing, thanks for the link... I was trying to get the sourceforge version working earlier and didn't know there was an updated version :D

infomon and narost have just changed the game completely for me. It's also nice to see lnet so active, the amunet was so dead and was making me feel lonely and sad XD

How in the hell did you manage to run up a bill like that and remain at level suck? Constant rerolling?

Personal preference. Lots of people don't like empaths at all, lots of people don't even like casters. I've never found sorcerer or empath to be particularly fun.

Looked like all the other questions were answered.

One more thing, don't bother with manipulation lore.

My first year or so of playing I probably rerolled 25 times. I don't know why but for whatever reason I just enjoyed playing new races and professions. My char always had like 50k fame and 5 million family fame back when they still had that.

Yeah, I've never stuck to a particular character in gs4. My empath is 9 now and I'm trying out sorcerer. I just have a really short attention span when I have a lot of options in an RPG. I didn't have a maxed character in WoW until Burning Crusade (highest was 54 priest and a full account worth of 20-50s in vanilla, finally started a pally in BC and forced myself to get him to 70, and then to 80 in WotLK). Give me a console single player RPG and I'll beat it, but when I play any sort of multiplayer RPG all the options are just too appealing to me and I have to try them all. That tends to lead to me getting bored with lower level content and quitting XD

GS4 takes a looooong time to level. I've always been surprised how many people are titled. Hitting max level takes some serious level of dedication. Hell, hitting 20 seems like a serious level of dedication to me.

One more thing, don't bother with manipulation lore.

I've heard that it's good to get 25 ranks in manipulation for bone shatter. Why would you suggest no ranks? Also, what would you suggest instead? I was told to get 25 in manip and push the rest into summoning for fire spirit - this sounds kinda boring though as I wanted to be using my empath skills primarily (part of the reason I'm trying out sorcerer now, as it seems like I can go nuts hunting with them).

Not dropping my empath though, I've met a lot of interesting people healing in-between hunts :D
