His AS sucks, and he can't do anything by himself. I played a warrior for twelve years, so I don't know much about waggling professions. I think I like the shield route (like Tillmen), but maybe it's more practical for lower levels to use runestaves since the TPs have already been spent on magic skills.

Eh, you should have elemental targetting by that level for bolts. maybe revisit your training plan and see how you can get up to 425.

wear full leather. drop all Lores or at least pick either air or fire. unless you need that perception to get into the broken lands, you could shave a few off that too. drop wizard ranks to 20 so you keep the familiar or even to 918 just for Cone.

I know. He has some skill migration going, but the Air lore won't be zero for a month. Just want to make sure everything looks good before I use the new FIXSKILLS. I don't want to wait another year.

Why drop Wizard to 20? And how many armor ranks for doubles with minimal hindrance or whatever? Anything blatantly wrong with this?

15 Armor
1x Physical Training
1x Fire lore
3x Spell Aiming
3x Arcane Symbols
3x MIU
.5x Perception

5 Climb (need more for near future?)
5 Swim (need more for near future?)

Major Elem: 20
Minor Elem: 30
Wizard: 30

drop wizard to 20 and raise major to 30.

But why?

If you're having problems hitting stuff, the extra 10 ranks in the 500s will snag you more AS from 513.

For your lores, 20 in Air is good, 21 will get you an extra spot in your disk (although it appears you specifically want fire lore for some reason). I say this a lot, but I'll say it again: I'm a big fan of a few ranks of earth lore for 509, 9 being a good stopping point instead of 15 if encumbrance isn't an issue for you. It'll help you carry around some wands to supplement your mana during a hunt. (with a caveat: I think I remember reading that they were looking into whether Earth lore was going to keep adding beyond the melee AS boost).

Which brings me to my next point: Holy crap that's a lot of HP you have there. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I always had up to the rank just before the cost doubled. I'd use wands if/when I ran out of mana (still do, in fact). Frees up a pretty decent chunk of TPs, which you can use for I would imagine at least one spell rank, i.e. more AS. 500s at like level will help both your 516 CS and capacity. And again, 500s contribute to 513. As has been mentioned, 425 is clutch. The reason people are suggesting you drop 900s, I think, is that you mentioned shitty AS, which the 900s do nothing to increase.

Mogonis

Cool. That all makes sense. Encumbrance isn't much of an issue, so I'll do the nine ranks of Earth lore.

I originally went to Air lore for Hand of Tonis (bolt), but then someone convinced me to do something else. I don't really remember. But what exactly is a powerful routine? Basically 500s for attacks at lower levels?

I mean, if I'm relying on the 500s, then I should go with Air lore, yes? No real reason for Fire lore unless I'm slinging flame spells.

505 is a bolt spell. once you get enough ranks for the bolt version ther really isn't a reason to train in lores b/c they suck

Mogonis
05-27-2010, 01:44 AM
True. At 20 ranks, 505 becomes a bolt. Then it's +0.001 DF per rank thereafter. Not exactly worth it, at least not until you're post-cap.

Disk space isn't a big concern, so I'm thinking I will stop Air at 21 for 505 bolt and a 10-slot disk.

I always see or hear about Immolation and how amazing it is. Isn't that worth training in Fire lore, or is it something better to hold off until higher level? Same for Air/Water for lightning?

Mogonis

Do wizards tend to train in mana sharing?

EDIT: As in, should I bother with Mana Control? What does it mean by "providing greater control over the use of mana in some Elemental spells?"

Shari

I train in air/water lore for lightning. Even with no fire lores Immolate is still a very powerful spell. But I have a lot more fun coning the shit out of things.

If I remember correctly mana control effects how well you are able to enchant, if you plan on doing that with your wizard.

In my 30's I was wtfpwning Wraithenmist in EN using mostly acid and tonis. I just stayed away from the shimmering fungus.

Not too concerned with enchanting if it means sacrificing TPs. If I can enchant well enough trained to hunt, I'll dabble in it. How well could I enchant at level 34, anyway?

Lord Orbstar
05-27-2010, 02:24 AM
yes. I would stop at 920 so you can have a familiar. you would be an embarrassing representative of the wizard world without a familiar. must have. lol.

fire lore..drop it all. if you want to immolate, wait until you are high level then respec next year for it. i love tonis bolt, so that is a good choice for air lore.

higher 500s will help with mana leech too. the numba one "i can hunt" spell i think. keeps you going like the energizer bunny.

double or full leather. it is your choice. as a pure without a lot of TPs, i think double is not worth it. now, if you own a nice set of padded doubles, go for it. otherwise, meh. Full leather has no hinderance. i would rather have those extra TPs into spells or climb. you will be climbing all over the place soon. Hell, you should go hunt Pinefar and use fire spells. need that climb though.

Also, I hope you are CoL. I still think its the best for pure wizards although GoS is real nice too.

EMC is going to add to your chance to have temporal reversion go off as well. Some wizards really, really love that spell. If you end up dropping shield to go with a runestaff those cheap magic skills will be a great way to add to your staff DS. If you were to pick your minor and major elemental spell ranks up to your train I'd say you'd be free and clear to do at least 5x enchants with no problem.

Edit: You're also missing out on 39 points of AS by not having your spell ranks at your level. 10 points from 513 and 29 from 425. (If I'm doing basic math correctly in my head, there is a fair chance I'm not)

yesicj

EMC will boost your mana recovery by 1 point per 10 ranks. It'll also reduce the recovery period (the amount of time until you can use it effectively again) for Mana Leech. When you eventually get 540, it'll help with that as well.

I'm not sure which society I'm going to put him through. He was Voln shortly after I rolled him (like eleven years ago), but I hate Voln and undead, and he never mastered. A few months ago I had him resign from Voln. I thought I'd try Sunfist, but CoL is the only society I have real experience with. Not sure I care to go through CoL for a third time, but Sunfist's abilities seems most beneficial to squares and semis. How are they for pures?

Lord Orbstar
05-27-2010, 12:30 PM
I cant answer GoS for pures. I had it on a magickal rogue and it rocked. I would recommend you drop minor elemental to 430 so you can double up on your harness power. you will be hurting for mana otherwise. maybe a little less PT to help free points

Mogonis

Double HP? Someone just said I had too much, and it wasn't even 2x.

If I'm not going to be using scrolls or hunting the Broeken Lands, do I need Arcane Symbols?

Cheap DS for runestavers, other than that probably not really.

FWIW, I cannot envision a "pure" wizard that cannot read scrolls - I would get 24 ranks minimum. But that's more for RP than mechanics.

:D

Mogonis

I didn't mean I'd never get AS, but I'd rather sell scrolls than use them. ;)

How much runestaff DS from 24 AS?

Double HP? Someone just said I had too much, and it wasn't even 2x.

To be fair, that's just my opinion as a guy whose mage always carried around wands to supplement mana. I like the fact that I can put TPs to use for other stuff and still hunt effectively just by spending a little silver. Plus having the extra mana to use a lot of crowd control spells is always nice.

How much runestaff DS from 24 AS?

At your level, that's a bit shy of an extra rank per level, which is nice. I can't tell you exactly what that translates to, but I do have a spreadsheet I used for that kind of thing. Though I can't swear that it's accurate or current (I didn't make it), shoot me a PM with an e-mail address and I'll send it if you want to fiddle with the numbers.

Mogonis

So how many ranks of HP do you suggest at level 34?

harness power is pretty damn important for a pure...

yesicj
05-27-2010, 09:47 PM
I won't disagree with you that it's important. I just think that, as one of the few things that can be pretty effectively recreated with something other than TPs (wands, on the slim chance that it wasn't obvious what I meant), it's worthwhile at least to consider allocating those TPs somewhere else. He's clearly got the MIU to use imbeddables. Those 8 MTPs for 1 extra mana could, given his current training, get him 8 ranks of Arcane Symbols, 2 and change ranks of perception, 2 ranks of EMC, 1 rank and change in an elemental lore, half a rank of PT, or a quarter of a spell. I'm not saying that he has to do any of those things, but there's a lot that can be done with what is effectively one wave of a silver or iron wand.

EDIT: To answer Mogonis' question: my HP training always included the last rank you could get before the TP cost doubled. I think that's 35 at level 34, but it might be 36. I can never remember how that system works, but I also haven't had to deal with it because I just add a rank whenever I level him up.
