View Full Version : The Office

I rented the DVD of the first season recently and I think this show is just hysterical.
The boss(David) is played perfectly! Such a great job of him mixing manager speak with utter cluelessness and a desire to maintain control even when clearly in the wrong. Fantastic.
Tim, as the most normal guy of the group, struggling with his attraction to the spoken for Dawn and just amazed at the idiocy of his coworkers and bosses who can only make jokes to keep his sanity.
Gareth as the "team-leader" who takes himself WAY too seriously and is the butt of the majority of Tim's jokes. Loves to reference the fact that he was in the Territorial Amry(which I am assuming is akin to our National Guard) and somehow works that into as many places as possible. "I was given this assignment because of my experience with things like this in the army". You know the guy.
Goodness, everyone on the show is really quite funny.
If you havent seen this already, do take a peek, i've only finished the first disk and am happily looking forward to the second.
Chica or Stray or anyone else for that matter, is it still playing over there? Still popular?

Never heard of it. Do they speak proper (American) English at least? :D

This show is like my fave show EVER. I have series 1 and 2 on DVD and I cant wait for the xmas special to come out on DVD. Its fucking hilarious.
Gareth is my fave charecter, seriously episode 1 of series one is the funniest by far. I love the "boss and team leader in drunken night out shocker" bit! ROFL!
Its probably the biggest hit comedy for a long time over here, they show repeats on BBC2 all the time but the xmas special was the last one ever, it tied up all the lose ends and the writter and star Ricky Gervais is moving on to other things.
Also, Mackenzie Crook who plays Gareth was in pirates of the caribbean, hes so cool!

Ok, just got the second series on DVD and its just as funny as the first!
David is killing me...he is played SO well in his idiocy as to almost make you feel bad....almost.
Anyone who is looking for a new comedy to try really should rent this or the first, both are just hysterical.

Odd.....perhaps if you add BBC to the search...:?:
I just got done watching Season 1 and 2 .. Have to say I really enjoyed the show.

Watch the Xmas special if you can. Its the best end to a comedy series, ever, EVER. The Office was excellent, though I still prefer Spaced. If you liked the Office though, try Alan Partridge, as he was where the David Brent character gets his inspiration.
I just got done watching the Xmas specials. Some pretty hilarious stuff.

I love the Office, I have the British DVD of series 1 I like it so much. :) The christmas special plays on BBC America every once in a while, David is such a great character, you truly do feel sorry for him, which is a feat.
Martin Freeman, Tim, is going to be in the Hitchhiker's Guide movie and I think he fits perfectly as Arthur Dent.
The American version of the Office is probably going to suck, but it has Steve Carrell, so who knows.
I didn't know they were even planning to make one. I almost wish they wouldn't and would just syndicate the original. But I suppose most people here wouldn't want to deal with the language, although most of it is understandable. Although it would be interesting to see what Steve Carrell would do with it.

Long live Skirmisher. Also, I think it's ironic that her last post was in Psykos' "A Final Goodbye" thread.

Best in the World :saint:
Theres nothing really overly british about it. Theres an occasional reference to things here and there and their accents but thats really it.
British humor just always seemed to be so, I dunno the word, dry? Even if they arn't talking about their politics. Maybe I just saw the wrong kind. Better than Eastern European humor, that's for sure.

Given the relative success of a film like Napoleon Dynamite I'm not so sure thats really such a terrible thing.

Heh, I'm quite shocked. I honestly didn't think you guys would get it. Thats not a criticism, I mean I don't get Tom Green, but the Office is like a million miles away from the likes of Friends and the other sort of generic sitcoms you see usually. I'm glad its so transcendental though as it deserves world wide recognition.
Oh yes, and dry is a by-word in British humour. I think it appeals to us alot more as a people as it would you guys.
Just like I don't find myself rolling around laughing at Will and Grace I guess.

Napoleon Dynamite, while funny at times, made my brain hurt.

Heh. A friend lent the DVDs to Jake and I last summer and we watched the first one, and we were like, "Huh? This sucks." But then we kept watching it and it started to get really funny. I think it just takes some getting used to for those of us that are used to humor that's a little more... I don't know, obvious? It's much more subtle in some ways, and then there's things that I don't think you'd be allowed to show on USA TV, like giant inflatible penises and characters that say "cock" constantly.
My favorite episode is the Quiz one, and the one where David Brent gives the seminar.
In closing,

Wow, I guess you won't be getting our Live Anatomy programs then... :(
Sorry for the hijack, but did Trailer Park Boys originally air in the UK, or was it a straight to BBC America thing?

I'm talking about regular, prime-time, non-extra cable channel TV. Also, Jenisi, post the awesome video again!

Will and Grace, Friends, and the Tom Green Show are/were awful, awful shows (two of which had decently hot chicks). Now the Daily Show is American comedy at its finest.

I like Napolean Dynamite, The Office and Tom Green. I must be easy to please.
Didn't the Office win like , 2 baftas in America?
I have the black box set and watched it while I was working a 14 hour shift.
Totally saved the day.
His reaction when the fat girl walks up to the entrance while he's waiting for his date . . perfect.
oh and .. ''If you don't know me by now . . .''

Holy crap the american version of this show made me want to gouge my eyes out.

Agreed.
I'm hoping it will get better when they move away from trying to do more literal translations of the original. From what I heard this weeks was just the pilot (the ep with the stapler in the jello and David telling Dawn shes fired for stealing post-its) and that the show is actually going to be new/unique story lines. So again I'm hoping it gets better.

Gareth equalling Arkans still make me laugh. A lot.
The show definitly improved a bit this week but has a long way to go.

I had to watch my DVDs again just to make myself feel better. It didn't work for Coupling, so I'm not sure I'll count on this project to suceed either.
