Anyone picking this up next week? I've grown kind of tired of the clan I game with in BFBC2 and that action is getting kind of stale.
I really like the idea of an old west MMO on the console, it feels like something that hasn't been looked at but that seems to be well thought out. Open world, multiplayer posses, good looking single player experience, I don't see much wrong with the concept.

I have it reserved. I do hope it isn't exactly a GTA3-4 set in the wild west. Is there a leveling system?
Mighty Nikkisaurus
05-15-2010, 01:27 PM
I'll post it here for everyone to see! It's similar to Grand Theft Auto but not a wild west clone.
There is leveling, there's also skills and stats that factor into determining whether you hit or miss or kill a target, etc.
There's an honor meter and a fame meter. You get to control whether you're a good guy or a bad guy and the meters adjust.
Some of the content is good solo and some will require a posse. Obviously, there are mounts. Only 16 players are allowed in each lobby though.

Can't wait. There are two types of online games, Free roam (can form up to 8v8 posse, and just roam around the world, doing objectives/events. Think 16 person MMO), and the more traditional shooter type online game modes (capture the flag, king of the hill, etc).

OK, glad I wasn't the only one looking forward to this. Shall we prepare to create the PC Posse on PS3? Perhaps a plurality of posse's since I'm not sure if you can mix honorable and dishonorable members in the same group. I hope we don't have the WoW or Star Trek problem with everyone going one side because of how much easier it is than the other.
EDIT: Apparently there is some exclusive content for the PS3 (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/red-dead-redemption-gets-exclusive-content-on-ps3/) if that sways your choice of console version additionally.

I have it preordered. Won't be actually playing it for a week or two though (PS3 broke, waiting on new one from Sony to get here), but I'll probably rent it on 360 in the meantime. Shit looks fucking epic in every way.

That sucks, I thought free roam would support way more than 16 at once. Hopefully they'll throw in some DLC later that increases it.

This is usually server side stuff, they can't host much more than that.

It took me a few tries to beat her.. you've gotta watch the stamina meter. I found not sticking straight to the path but cutting corners/leaping over terrain made it so I could stay ahead and not mess up the stamina too much.
I was out doing a treasure quest and some guy goes tearing by me, stops, hops off the horse and just starts to take a piss. Yellow stream and everything. Hilarious.

I'm enjoying this game now. I really shouldn't bitch about the difficulty as I am using the "casual" aim assistance, but the only times I have died it is because I was trying to hogtie someone with six guys standing around blasting me in the face. Fun game, but I think you get way too much health.

God damn bears.
For me, this game hands down beats GTA4 on every single level.
Just standing around and watching stuff tick by makes you realise this game is wayy better.
The physics of bullet impact and corpse rag doll effect makes shooting people so much fun!
Also, something I always love more than anything is the bullet wound decals so you can inspect your accuracy or just plan get kicks on horrificly painful ways to die.

Uh... yeah the game is great, but I'm pretty pissed at Rockstar, there are a handful of bugs in it that are showstoppers, they should not have shipped with them. I hogtied this guy, picked him up, and the animation had me pick him up but he stayed on the ground. I then could not get on a horse, put "him" down, pick the real him up, or do anything to get myself unbroken, I had to let myself get killed. I've had a lasso drawn between me and my horse after I got on it, hitched it, and was walking around, just a constant line between me and the horse no matter what I was doing (lasso no longer equiped). I've "fallen" through the ground (teleported me a distance away from where I was).
I haven't played a ton, and I'm sure I'll find more bugs, I'm enjoying the game, but it's absurd that they could release it like this. I haven't played multi-player yet, but I hear there are some bad bugs in that as well (invisible cougars). Saying they've "matured" just because they've put out a game that's a different genre is pretty stupid.

Yeah, I finished my first bounty and managed to get locked in the sheriff’s office. It was early in the game so a restart from that point wasn’t so bad.
Nothing as bad as the vampire cure bug from Oblivion...

Rockstar is notorious for releasing very very buggy games. I'm amazed they get past 360/PS3 certification.
Having said that, even with the bugs, I'm still having a great time in multiplayer and single player.
Saying they've "matured" just because they've put out a game that's a different genre is pretty stupid.
My earlier response did not succinctly address this half-handed criticism of my comment.
I never said that Rockstar has matured as a gaming company just because they’ve put out a game that’s a different genre. Why I say they’ve matured as a gaming company is the stunning detail they’ve put into this game: from visual, to audio, to the script, the gameplay, art direction, music... everything about this game, to me, blows anything else they’ve done out of the water regardless of genre. That they’ve reproduced the genre to the level of detail and faithfulness that they have is even more impressive.

I rented the 360 one while I waited for my PS3 to arrive (got here 2 days ago yay).
Only difference I noticed was I had to turn the brightess all the way up on 360 to be able to see much of anything at night or in a dimly lit room, which then made bright areas look too bright.
No issues like that on PS3 with the default brightness.
Other than that I haven't noticed any difference in either version.
I was driving back to work today, saw a couple of hawks above the treeline, and immediately thought of pulling out my Winchester Repeater and picking them off...

I just hit a pretty nasty bug in this game, where no Y button prompts will work. Can't skin animals, can't get on the horse, tried resetting and it was still there. I have no problem looking past many of the other, graphical, bugs I've seen since I understand it's a massive world and there are bound to be some errors, but having what is essentially the primary button to interact with anything in game broken is a pretty major bug.

Were you in single player or free roam?
I've encountered a few glitches and bugs on xb360 but nothing major and nothing that really interrupted my gameplay.
One thing I have noticed is that in free roam there seems to be a lot less animals, etc as you'd find in single player. That gets under my skin a lot when I have to pretty much camp places just to meet quotas. Very annoying.
Something that has also been annoying to me is the unlock rate for female chars in free roam. I guess I just gripe that I wish they'd not made them 'later level' and more 'as you go' unlocks.

I was in single player.
One interesting thing, and I'm not certain if this is as designed, but every time I kill a wolf, I get non-stop spawns. I ran out of ammo the last time I was out there so long. Aside from that, I've had the same problem with animal spawns in multiplayer.

640 'expanded' != 720.
I noticed a definite difference when comparing the 360 to the PS3 when they were near each other. Doesn't mean that the PS3 version is bad. I've been having a great time with the single player.
Only bug I've run into involved a dead guy continuing to stand around post duel.

There's random events that can occur when you're traveling along on your horse. One of them is a whore standing next to a broken down carriage calling for help. When you pull up, a bunch of thugs ambush you. Kill the thugs, and the whore will begin to beg for mercy.
The first couple of times this happened to me, I spared the whore, and she gave me money. The next time I shot her in the head. The next, I hogtied her, and put her on the train tracks. The next time, I lassoed her, drug her behind my horse for a few miles, and then threw her off a cliff. The last time, I hogtied her, carried her to an area that I knew was populated by cougars, dropped her in the middle of a field, and dropped animal bait next to her. It didn't take long for the cougars to come along and kill her. I then shot the cougars and sold the meat, skin, and teeth for a tidy profit.
This game is incredible.

The only thing it has in common with Gun is that its a western, and that its awesome.
My husband played Gun and it was great to watch as a bystander, RDR is even better. So, so much better.
Watched my brother get ambushed by some bandits and in his frenzy of trying to shoot all of them swung the gun around too much without paying attention and shot his horse in the back of the head. Had to shoot them from the ground and when they were all dead, skinned is own horse and then took one standing around that the bandits were riding.

If you can make it to the point where you can choose who you want in your party and stuff, the game gets a lot more fun to play.
Everyone says it really starts getting awesome when you get to Gran Pulse, but my PS3 died on me right after I got there and fuck starting over.

I found a neat trick to skip the skinning animation and save a bit of time.
Stay on your horse, and walk it slowly to the corpse of the animal you want to skin. Stop your horse so that the dead animal is under your horse and slightly to the left... Positioned in such a way so that when you get off your horse, you're standing directly on the corpse.
Press Y to get off your horse, press Y quickly to skin, and press Y to get on your horse. You'll get all the loot from the animal without doing the animation.
You need to make sure your horse is completey stopped. Basically, if something is blocking you from doing the looting animation, you wont do it, and will just get the loot. You'll notice this happen when looting a person you kill near a wall or other obstacle. For this, you're just using your horse as a portable obstacle.
Edited to add: this method doesn't work too well with fat animals like bears and boars.

Anytime anyone asks me for a lift, I know I'm about to shoot them in the back of the dome, just slow down near them, let them pull you off, and them promptly blow their brains all over the mane of your horse, loot your hard earned $6, and get back on your horse.
The variety of random encounters isn't as good as it should be, you'll start to recognize them all, I just wish they'd mix it up occasionally (the guy asking for a ride actually wanting a ride). Stranger missions are a bit better.
One of my biggest pet peeves right now is the inability to tell what kind of horse you have, I can't tell if a horse I tame is faster than my current horse until I get it out on the trail, I tamed one and it was like "New items are available at the shop" and I figured it must have been one of the locked $750 horses, but it was slow as shit... so I shot it several times with the buffalo rifle.

When someone steals your horse, as they're riding away, you can whistle for your horse, and your horse will buck them off. But if you kill the person after that, you lose honor for some reason.
As for horses, there's three top-tier horses. The Kentucky, which is gold and you'll get automatically in the storyline from the Bonnie missions. There's the Hungarian, which is a white horse with a black face that can be found in eastern Mexico (look for the horse pictures on the map.) Then there's the American, which is an all black horse that you can find on the plains near Blackwater.
Stats wise, the horses are:
Kentucky:
Speed: 4
Stamina: 4
Hungarian:
Speed: 3
Stamina: 5
American:
Speed: 5
Stamina: 3

I finished the main storyline last night. The ending was very appropriate, though a bit unexpected. The final few missions were brutally boring, though. You'll know them when you get to them.
I also finished getting all the outfits. But aside from that, I'm kind of bored of the game. It's sandbox, yeah, but not like GTA4 where you could fart around in fast cars in a huge city. Most of the RDR world is empty with nothing to do but hunt and pick flowers. And I've got enough money that I don't even bother skinning animals I kill anymore.
I may give multiplayer a try, but I've heard that gets pretty boring pretty quickly.

Yeah the single player is starting to get a bit boring for me too, I'm in blackwater. I was complaining to a friend about how money becomes so worthless because of how easy it is to buy the necessities early, and you don't ever find yourself having to restock on anything. And the random encounters aren't really unique. Right now I'm just enjoying murdering lots of buffalo and letting the bodies rot to make indian's cry.

Multiplayer is pretty fun, but yeah I can see running gang hideouts 4723804207704 times (there's not much else to do but kill each other or rack up a bounty in town).
Fortunately there's some free multiplayer DLC coming in June with some co-op story mode stuff I think it was.

after trying out this game at a friends, I am pretty much convinced it's worth buying. I will take back the smack I talked about this game. : )

The new Undead Nightmare DLC rocks the house.
I've only been messing with the story mode so far, but it's definitely worth the $10. I like how you have to shoot the zombies in the head to kill them too. You can hit them with 4732894720 body shots and it won't matter.
I'm about to go pwn some multiplayer and see how that is. Anyone with RDR should download this right now. Even if you're at Ebon Gate. Fuck Ebon Gate. Kill old west zombies.

It's pretty quality. Was worth lugging my PS3 to civilization for.
Loved it. Completed it and I don't think I'll play it again.
I loved the bullet decals on bodys too. They should do that more often.
