Well, which one would you pick? Trying to decide from the two
Burghal Cons:
Worst encumberance (even more so than Halflings)
-15 AS
Small size limits ambushing and certain CMANs
Burghal Bonuses:
Great stats
Best maneuver bonus in the game
Sweet RP
Bonuses to being ambushed by taller critters
Bonuses to certain CMANs (hamstring, I believe)
Elf Cons:
They're elves
-15 discipline really screws stunman
Elf Pros:
Good stats
Practically immune to disease
Halfling Pros:
Same as Burghal
Halfling Cons:
Same as Burghal except less maneuver bonus
Sweet TD bonuses to sorcerer/elemental spells
So, which would you choose?

Added Halfling as another choice just because I'm stuck between the three. Unfortunately, I don't know how to edit a poll. If I could cutthroat/subdue as a Burghal I would pick them hands down.

False. Unless Mestys lied to me or I'm not understanding exactly.

Oh, also, don't be a gnome. Lulz.
Don't discount the ETD bonuses from dwarves and halflings.

Gnomes are fun to play, but encumberance does become an issue sometimes. I play three gnomes and the poor things probably look like hunchbacks. I've found that with gnomes, I can't go sword and board, due to the long rt, but archery, brawling, and voln-fu are all pretty efficient. Back when I first started and was trying to sword and board my ranger, I used to try and hack off legs. I remember once getting the message that I couldn't reach high enough to ambush a troll's leg.
Mechanically, even with a gnome this game will always be quite easy. The biggest and most obvious annoyance I've had is a pretty much constant need for strength unless you're extremely disciplined in how much you carry and/or don't like treasure.

I've played gnomes/halflings exclusively for the last year or so and the biggest issue isn't the encumberance. I've got more trouble with the size issue. I suppose I'll go elf - who knows, maybe I'll end up liking an elf for once.

It depends on your hunting tactic, but even with archery your DS will tank if you get too encumbered as a smaller race (unless you are a dwarf, but their dex bonus sucks for normal archery).
