View Full Version : What irritates me....

I've noticed something recently that irritates me.
A lot of people make threads about stuff and ask, "what is your opinion, how have you handled this in the past," et cetera. THIS, my dear fellow posters, is a free and clear invitation to talk about yourself, post your own personal stories, et cetera.
The thing that irritates me is when someone posts something saying, "I did this, and this is how it was," or whatever, and without any comment at all to the person who started the thread or anything, they're like, "I did yada yada yada."
Maybe you think this is stupid, and maybe you are right. But when I see the same person, or people, doing this over and over again it really works my nerves. If what you did was so important, how come you didn't make a thread about it? Or are you just that arrogant, that anyone sharing good news in a thread just HAS to be ignored, and yet followed up with a post about what a cool person YOU are?
That's all.

I kinda think it's stupid. Conversation means yakking about your opinions and experiences. If you just want threads to be about your deal and your stuff, cool, but some folk don't want to play.
Now me, I don't start many threads. Me saying "Well *I* did this blah blah blah" just out in the open like that is real arrogant , I think. I ain't so self important I should start threads just to talk about me.

You only found a penny?
I was out working with the poor and found 50 dollars in the street and gave it to a charity.
Heh, but yeah Spun, I have noticed that also. Just human nature.

Wow, now I feel like if I post anything it's somehow wrong.
I mean I posted in Ylena's thread about losing weight, that I too had lost weight and had similar experience of someone saying good job out the blue. Is that taking away from her?

Not at all, in my opinion, SHM. You started your post with "20 lbs in 3 weeks is awesome", thereby acknowledging Ylena's accomplishment. You then went on to share your experience along the same line.
That is not anywhere near the same as someone who posts (in the same thread) solely about themselves and THEIR accomplishments, with no acknowledgement of the efforts and successes of the original poster.
Your post complimented the thread. The other type of poster simply hijacks it to talk about him/herself, as I see it.
I hear you, Spun. :)

I'm going to assume that you were either referring to myself or TheEschaton. I just have a few things to say.
1. Don't worry about naming names, go ahead and do it. It's an internet forum, I'm sure that neither he, myself, or anyone else would hold it against you for calling us thread hijackers.
2. ...I'm pretty sure we still remained on topic.
3. Does every single post have to refer to the original post?

Like I've said before: I have some humility problems. I'm trying to work on them, but hell, if you had a problem, you could of U2U'd me and said, "Hey, man, you're an ass." I'm irritated by people who can't air their complaints towards the people they are complaining about, instead of publishing them in a general, trying-to-be-non-accusatory tone.
Will it be better if I refer to myself in the third person? At least then, there won't be any I's in the post.
TheEschaton thinks that's a good idea.

As for the irritant that caused this thread, I have this recommendation: don't sweat the small stuff. :) Life's more fun when I don't stress, I can only imagine how kewl it would be for people who have real stress.

It's not just about you man. Everyone does it and it isn't just from the last thread. She very well may not even have been thinking about you when she posted E, how's that for your humility

HarmNone was, at the very least, Hulkein. TheEschaton went through that thread again, and she could only be talking about Ed or TheEschaton..

I suggest you take your own advice. You seem to have little trouble insulting others.

Only idiots, The Edine....only idiots.
And furthermore, only idiots who insist they're correct when they're not, and blatantly ignore facts that point out their incorrectness.
In other words, in order to be direct, since skirting the issue is a peeve of TheEschaton's: you, The Edine. You're pretty much the only person TheEschaton makes fun of.
Edited to capture a stray possessive pronoun.

Aww I love you too. Especially when you get all defensive like that.
Keep up the good work!

Bzzt! Wrong! Actually, I read Spun's post and went back to the thread in question to see what SHM said in his response. I copied and pasted the relevant part here to reassure him that he had not done the kind of thing Spun talked about.
I then went on to explain what I felt Spun WAS trying to say. I did not intend to point the finger at anyone, as I did not re-read all the responses that were in the thread, so had no idea who had responded in either manner.
If my clarification struck a chord with you, it was purely coincidence.

Ah, my work here is done. I name names when I feel like it, and do not when I don't feel it's appropriate. Sometimes, it can be better for people to read about the issue and decide how they feel about it (care, don't care, piss off) rather than deciding, "oh, she's talking about that buttmunch, sure, let's bash him/her."
In any case, I think the point has been made and discussed about as much as it could be.

It bugs me when people add stuff to get the attention. I have a friend who has done everything better than me and some. If I say something, she's done something silimlar but better.
Conversation is about exchanging stuff and the second person shouldnt be attempting to outdo the first (well not all the time) that is when it gets to be crap. But if one person says I did this, and explains and the other says yeah, I did this..and then they talk on an equal basis thats cool.
And I have no clue what the bitching is thats going alongside this thread.
Ignorance is bliss.

<making this about me>
I know I'm hella guilty of this, Spun.
Quite a few times I've actually started posting replies before and said, "What the fuck, noone wants to hear this about me".
But alot of them get through. I realize that this is irritating and will make an effort to read over my post not only for the typo nazi (Bob), but also to see if the content is in line with what the original poster is asking.

...because making threads when a thread on the subject already exists is either spamming or pointless? There'd be several threads, each with 5 or 6 replies, instead of one condensed thread with maybe 2 or 3 pages of replies.
I'm not going to say that this portion of your post was an attack on someone's posting style, but you were toe-ing that line.
