View Full Version : Lich for the beginner

Every time I read information about scripting on this forum, people always talk about 'Lich' as if it is the best thing that has happened to GS since Helga's Bar. I am using psinet right now, but only for the 'goto' command.

I have no background in coding, or scripting (besides very basic GS scripts), so I was wondering, would it be practical for me to switch to Lich from psinet? Is Lich easy enough for a beginner to use, or would I continuously run into problems? :help:

Does anyone have the time to give me a crash course in Lich?

Lich is a step-up from Psinet in terms of complexity, but not by much. You don't need to understand code to use it. It's also far better than Psinet in nearly every regard.

So, what can I do to get started?

So, what can I do to get started?

Uninstall Psinet completely, and I mean completely. Then go to http://lichproject.org/download.html and follow the instructions.

There's also something of a newbie guide on the other Lich site.

http://lichproject.com/wiki/Guide

Just use ;lnet help instead of ;chat help when you get to that section, since lnet was updated after this guide was created. If you don't like the lnet chat, use ;untune lnet instead of killing the script.

There is also the ;help command, which deals with your Lich scripts.

Even you never intend to code - narost and go2 are reason enough.

You don't need to know anything about coding or scripting. There is a repository full of scripts already written for you, with more added every day. Once you get it up and running, people are always willing to help you out on lnet chat.

Lich is not "hard" to use or anything like that. This nonsense stems from the difficulty people have with getting it to play nice with PsiNet which is due to problems with PsiNet. If you don't intend to run it with PsiNet you likely won't have any problems at all.

It's very easy for the baseline user. Tillmen and others have gone out of their way to make it easy for Psinetters to make the switch. Just about everything you're used to from Psinet has a lich equivalent, which is usually better. Atlas, goto, baggage, grab, spellup... They're just called ;narost, ;go2, ;sortit (I think), ;grabit, and ;waggle, but they function as well or better than Jamus' stuff. Just ask for help on the LNet and people are usually pretty good about sharing, or helping along.

;sortit (I think)

is there still an auto looter script?

I think Gibs can be setup for that.

Tillmen wrote ;loot which runs in the background and loots everything for you. I'm not sure how intelligent it is as far as what items to pick up and what items to leave, though.

There are several other scripts like ;lootit which you run when you want to loot something and it will loot and then decide what loot to keep

I think Gibs can be setup for that.

;gibs_looter, which is quite good but no longer available on the repository.

Im going to have to see if my scripts are still on my old desktop. I had some good lich scripts including an autolooter that was fairly intelligent.

Thanks for all the helpful feed back. I'm going to uninstall psinet tonight.

I ran them (psinet/lich) concurrently. It worked perfectly fine.

Where's the repository? I found http://lichproject.sourceforge.net/list.php but can't seem to download any of these script files, including repository.lic

Don't use the sourceforge page. That's the outdated Lich. Go to http://lichproject.org/ instead and install Ruby and Lich to your machine. Then log in and type ;repository in game to access the user-submitted scripts.

Thanks, but I did that and get this:

>;repository
--- Lich: could not find script `repository' in directory C:/Users/...

So uh....how do I get Lich working with Shattered? It loads up fine in Prime, but not with Shattered.

Going through SGE, using Win XP Pro.

EDIT: Nevermind I got it. Stupidly assumed that the Lich launcher needed to be updated for Shattered.
