View Full Version : Seeking Horror Movie Thrills and Chills

I've decided I want to watch some good horror movies. Other than zombie movies (of which I've seen most), I'm not a real fan of gore so not too interested in slasher type titles unless they are really well done. I'm more looking for ones that really plants itself in my head along the lines of the Exorcist, Paranormal Activity, The Ring, Ghost Story, etc. Also like creature features like An American Werewolf in London, Alien(s), Predator, The Thing and so on.

Any recommendations on some that will totally melt my face? Suggestions for obscure titles would be great because we've usually already watched popular new releases in the theatre. I don't mind older or subtitled movies either as long as they are good. Anything that will make me want to sleep with the lights on would be terrific. Thanks!

Not terribly obscure, but The Shining. The original, not the crappy mini-series.

It's even better if you can visit Estes Park, CO and do the ghost tour in the Stanley Hotel which it was based upon.

30 Days of Night was pretty cool.

And just for you Tisket...

I loved Zombie Strippers. And Redneck Zombies! I was going to suggest Black Sheep as well, which is a critter flick. Zombie and critter flicks are my favorite, although they're funny rather than scary. Not that too much is really scary anymore. Slither is funny/weirdly gross if you're up for that.

Carnival of Souls (aka Corridors of Evil). Probably my all-time favorite. Shows its age a little, but heavy on the atmosphere and just really eerie throughout.

One of the first horror movies I ever owned was a double-feature Carnival of Souls and Night of the Living Dead.

EDIT: I feel I should clarify, this is the Herk Harvey-directed, starring Candace Hilligoss Carnival of Souls. Not the lame Wes Craven one.

High Tension, french film, great flick.
Wolf Creek wasn't bad, intelligent female lead, not just a screaming moron.
Hellraiser one and two (in order), the others are mostly blech.
Nightbreed wasn't bad either, another Clive Barker monster film.
Dead/Alive by Peter Jackson, but it has to be the unrated version, zombies!
I'll think of more later, it's early.

I wouldn't call them scary honestly more fantasy thriller, but I really enjoyed these two movies. Great effects, action, music, nice character development and plot line I thought.

They broke all kinds of records for a russian film. I cannot recall if they were both subtitled or not. I think Night Watch is, and Day Watch isn't.

The Thing. - 1982

In the Mouth of Madness.

Jacobs Ladder.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Beginning.

There are a bunch of old 80's movies I remember being scary but, I doubt they are now. Haven't seen them since I was just a wee kiddo.

For some reason I was absolutely terrified of Silver Bullet and The Gate.

I still have weird dreams that resemble The Gate...

Event Horizon

Last House on the Left (the newest remake isn't half bad)

Also check out 'The Eye (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325655/)', not the American remake. That movie was freaky.

For creature features, check out the Feast movies. The first one is excellent, the second two are campy but funny. It's pretty gore-driven, though.

Let The Right One In didn't feel like a horror movie, more like a.. "Awwwww" movie. I still love it nonetheless.

Rob Zombie sucks at movies, period.

Planet Terror is good, more fun though. Oh, House of The Devil. It just came out recently, but it's pretty good. Whatever you do don't watch Dead Snow, Nazi Zombies and snow are retarded.

I'll think of more..I have a whole goddamn collection. Trying to think of the really good ones.

Edit: I keep making my customers watch The Collector. It's pretty good, I love it.

You better be kidding about the last one before I shoot myself.

The new Freddy Krueger looks like he has down syndrome, in no way is down syndrome scary.

Watched Let the Right One In and Session 9 last night.

Let the Right One In was a great movie and I totally enjoyed it but I wouldn't say it was terribly frightening movie (unless you count my new fear of Swedish children). It was more of a tragedy than a horror movie in my opinion. Great movie though. I can see Hollywood remaking it soon. If anyone else gets it, make sure to order the release with English theatrical subtitles and DON'T watch it with dubbing turned on.

I saw Session 9 recommended elsewhere and gave it a shot. It was pretty scary. Built tension well but the ending was too reminiscent of a slasher movie I thought. Still, it was worth watching.

It's weird, I never think to recommend Session 9 to people. I know a few of the crew that worked on that movie, and it was filmed at an abandoned mental institution near me. The movie was good, although not great, but I love the atmosphere.

Cat's Eye!

I saw that a long time ago. Good scary movie but I was even easier to scare back then. I'll have to watch it again to see if it's held up over time.

Speaking of cats, there is a scene in Let the Right One In where this woman who has been infected with the vampire virus gets attacked by a dozen cats. Apparently cats dislike vampires. Awesome scene.

28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later is a good combo if you watch them together on the same night (which I just did; first time I saw 28 Weeks Later too).

I attached a working torrent for 28 Weeks Later. As someone who makes these kinds of DVD rips.. the quality is good enough that you aren't going to be distracted by poor audio/video so I definitely recommend the download if you're wanting to add it to your collection. Small resolution so it may not be as nice output'ed to a high end TV (but it looked fine 1600x900 on my monitor). My only real complaint is that it's AVI. Wish these guys would focus more on better tech (Matroska) than compatibility.

Anyways, on the movie itself...

There were a number of tension filled moments and one really cringe worthy moment. Not really a gore fest like a slasher flick.. but there is lots of blood and violence.

I totally recommend watching 28 Days Later prior, even if you've already seen it.

Also.. listen to the credits for a minute or two.. that music is really good to wind down with.

Oh.. and.. fucking Dr. Rush.. glad he's in another galaxy! ;)

Has anyone already suggested the Rob Zombie movies?

Not super scary but they can be fun if you get in the mindset. Make a weekend of it, a themed weekend. Call it 'Hillbilly Killer' weekend.

Start with House of a 1000 Corpses. Then do Devils Rejects. In between those two getting snacks and stuff play the music. Start with Pussy Liquor (song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgOisCX5b7g). Then if you guys are still feeling the mood try the album Educated Horses, most of it is consistent with the Hillbilly Killer theme. Litter the place with creepy circus stuff and clowns...sinful amounts of whiskey and moonshine. Best during Halloween!

Hillbilly Killer weekend was fun in barracks. Not sure how it will work in a house with kids. But shit this can be fun. Send them to grandmas!

Watched Pontypool tonight. Fucking great movie. One of the best I've seen in a while. But it left me a little afraid to speak English after the movie ended.

edit to add: It's a zombie movie in which noone gets eaten on screen. As a matter of fact, almost all the gore and action occurs offscreen. And yet it still managed to keep me riveted. Loved it.

You need to see Dead Air now. Search the 500's- DTV. Somehow I managed to catch Pontypool and Dead Air within 24 hours of each other on accident. They are extremely similar but in different locals, different styles and everything. Not sure if one copied the other or vice versa.

The Descent and The Descent: Part 2 are both okay, although not great.

The Descent (first one) is about a few women who go spelunking in a cave... they have a small accident and find their way into an old cave system that's not mapped. While they're down there, these freaky dark-dwelling critters start to attack them... it's very raw and brutal.

The second one... the only survivor of the first movie gets picked up but can't remember what happened to her friends. The police take her back down to figure out what happened, since one of the women was a senator's daughter. Hijinks ensue.

I watched the Descent when it first came out on DVD and it scared the fuck out of me, mostly because it triggered my claustrophobia. I will never understand why anyone would voluntarily go into dark underground caves for FUN. Those women deserved to get eaten by cave dwelling monsters.

I did not know there was a sequel though. I'll have to check it out.

Danvers definitely is (or was, I guess) a creepy place.

They (mostly) tore it down to put in some crappy housing.

I just found this neat snippet about the new construction on Wikipedia, which I was not aware of:

... on April 7, 2007, four of the apartment complex buildings and four of Avalon bay's construction trailers burned down in a large, mysterious fire visible from Boston, some seventeen miles (27 km) away. The mysterious conflagration was confined mostly to the buildings under construction on the eastern end, with damage to the remaining Kirkbride spires from catching fire due to excessive heat. An investigation is underway concerning the cause of the mysterious fire. Avalon Bay provided a live webcam of the construction at the old site of the hospital at their website; however, the pictures cut out at approximately 2:03 AM the night of the fire, and the webcam was disabled, possibly due to the fire.

The underground tunnel leading up from the power plant still exists, blocked off at the top of the hill, however it is uncertain whether the tunnel network on top of the hill was actually removed or not during demolition and rebuilding.
