Westwood gaming company Turbine Inc. has been scooped up by a California media giant.

The privately held maker of “The Lord of the Rings Online” and other so-called massively multiplayer online games agreed to be acquired by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We have been looking to expand access to our online worlds to more players and more markets,” said Jim Crowley, Turbine’s president and CEO, in a statement. “This acquisition is very exciting because it allows us to expand globally while continuing to focus on creating spectacular online games that our loyal fans and players have come to expect.”

Turbine was founded in 1994 and employs about 300 people. It is also known for its online game of “Dungeons & Dragons.”

Warner Bros. already controlled all “Lord of the Rings” games rights except for the online role-playing gaming rights held by Turbine.

The company plans to release “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North” next year – a game developed at Snowblind Studios, which Warner Bros. bought in early 2009.

This might be good news for LotR, but not sure how this will play out for DDO. Time will tell.

Once upon a time there was a game I really liked called Star Chamber. Sony bought the company that made it, and within 6 months it was dead and abandoned. I am going to be quite put out if the same happens to DDO.

why the need for the "so-called" qualifier? Is mmorpg that subjective of a term?

Is Asheron's Call still around? That was a good Turbine MMO back in the day.
