I couldn't find a pet appreciation post so decided to start one.

Back in October, I found this blood-covered skinny little border collie staggering alongside the freeway. When I got out of the car and walked over to her, she kinda fell over in a heap and just lay there. She had this big bleeding wound on her side and I thought she'd been hit by a car. Once I got her to the vet though, I found out she'd been shot. She was also extremely malnourished, weighing just under 15 pounds, and was very pregnant. I named her Caolie Cu (roughly translates to skinny little dog) and decided to keep her as she was the neediest thing I've ever seen.

Anyway, got her all patched up and she had TEN healthy puppies two weeks later. Unfortunately, she'd been so malnourished and injured that she didn't produce any milk so the puppies had to be bottle-fed and were later fostered out at a friend's mom's kennel where there were a couple of cocker spaniels who'd had puppies that were ready to be weaned.

When I first found her, she was terrified of everyone and everything. She'd cower under the desk or behind chairs and skulk around the outskirts of the room and I was afraid she'd never get over whatever had been done to her in the past. Now, I'm happy to say she's a completely different dog. She'll lay out in the middle of the room, can't be petted enough, and gets so excited to see me when I come home that she literally jumps up to the top of the door. She tosses her toys up in the air and then pounces on them when they land. Sometimes I think she's more cat than dog. She's gained 25 pounds, though the vet says she should gain about 10 more. She's still not entirely healthy as she's got heart worms, but she just recently became strong enough to survive the treatment for those.

I hadn't planned on getting a dog but I'm glad I kept her. Now, tell me about your pets.

I too rescued my dog from the jaws of death. Long story short, I found myself in a war zone once when I spotted the pup cowering in the middle of an intense firefight. I leapt into action. Bypassing a half dozen orphans huddled behind the hulk of a burnt out SUV (because really, one person can only do so much), I snatched the little cur from under enemy sniper fire. Tucking the dog into my jacket I managed to get back to the relative safety of a nearby building by utilizing a pattern of tucks and rolls reminescent of a ninja movie I saw recently. Then, traveling only at night and living off insects and early morning condensation for hydration, we marched hundreds of miles to the nearest airlift location. I'm told that the locals still tell tales of the loco white woman and her vicious purse dog.

I was at the pet store today about to buy a Puggle. Stupid landlords won't allow dogs tough. So, I picked out my fourth bird, "Ghost", sorry no pictres yet. And got my second kitty, Sophie. Still needs another two weeks with its mother, but it's the one with the orange dot on it's head.

Hey, this will let me know who to ship my demonic cats to! Not that I don't like them and I do make sure they're cared for properly...but the husband and I just aren't cat people. Unfortunately, knowing our luck, these two beasts will live FOREVER...and when they do finally die (long after the dog has passed on), the daughter will likely be so heartbroken that she'll convince us to get another cat that we'll be stuck with after she moves out. But they have been really good around her for the last 18 months, with only two incidents of the declawed one swatting at her.

As for the dog.. I have no idea how parents of toddlers get by without one to clean up all the food that gets thrown on the floor. Daughter throws the food down, dog is let into the kitchen to clean it up, and then a pass with Swiffer Wet cloth and it's done. (All the food is probably why the dog tolerates this thing that took his Momma away from him.)

My 14 year-old black cat Mouser was the runt of the litter of a stray cat that had her babies on a Navy base. The sailors fed the momma scraps until there was a huge thunderstorm. The next morning the momma had relocated all her kittens except Mouser. The sailors waited for days to see if the mom would come back for her but it never happened so they captured her and gave her to my girlfriend at the time.

I did not want a cat but I didn't feel like ditching my girlfriend over a cat so... off to the vets. Vet said she had cardboard in her stomach, probably from trying to eat pizza boxes, horrible flea infestation, malnourished and sick etc. She was so small she could sit up in the palm of my hand. So I nurtured her while my stupid girlfriend went on her annual camping trip (I hate camping).

From day one I could not keep Mouser away from me. No matter how many times I shoved her across the room she came trotting right back up to me. When I would leave the apartment she would meow until I returned or she lost her voice, whichever came first. It was so bad at first I actually talked my boss at the time into letting me bring her to work with me so I could gradually get her used to being separated. She slept in a vegetable box at my feet or in my lap while I worked and my coworkers loved her. I still keep a vegetable box with some bedding at the foot of my desk at home for her (and she still curls up in it when I'm on the computer at night).

Girlfriend's long gone... but Mouser remains. She greets us at the door every day when we come home and follows me around like a puppy until I stop and let her climb up on my lap so she can "sniff" where I've been.

I've had all kinds of animals as pets and bar-none Mouser has been the most loyal. I guess I became her "mom" when I nursed her back to health as a kitten (and I wouldn't be surprised if she outlived all her littermates, runt or no).

Oh what the hell.

My oldest pet is Spartacus. I had a cat named Paco before him.. he was a short-haired orange tabby that my parents got only a few weeks before I was born.. Paco died when I was 18 (and he was 18), when I was out in Connecticut visiting my (long-distance at the time) boyfriend over the summer. I was absolutely heartbroken and extremely upset that I wasn't there to hold him as they put him down. I lived in an apartment with my dad, and unfortunately, animal abandonment was not that uncommon. One day towards the end of that same summer some of our neighbors moved out. It wasn't until a month later when a scraggly, malnourished orange cat covered in motor oil followed me from the parking lot up the stairs and to my front door that I realized the neighbors had left their cat behind. Before that point the thought of getting a new pet hadn't even occurred, because I was still too upset about Paco.

I took him in and fed him- he ate so fast that he threw up a minute later. I fed him again and he ate a little slower, called my dad and told him I found a stray. My dad was okay with us keeping him as long as I promised to take him to the vet for shots ASAP. I gave him a bath- it was the first and ONLY time he allowed himself to be bathed without putting up a vicious fight, heh. I named him Spartacus because for being such a little cat, he has a huge personality. He meows and 'talks', and is very stubborn. He's also an excellent fighter- he regularly chases my dog around/smacks him around just to show him who's boss. Despite what he'd gone through he was extremely friendly. Every day when I'd get home from class he'd be waiting for me, and my dad told me he'd sit by my bedroom door and meow when I was gone. The next summer I moved to Connecticut and brought two suitcases of my stuff and the cat on the cross-country flight with me.

He has his issues. When he gets stressed out he eats to the point of making himself sick.. he's terrified of stick-type objects, as well- baseball bats, golf clubs, even stuff like waving a fake sword at him will make him dart under the couch and/or urinate out of fear. Besides those personality ticks, he's a fiesty but sweet cat. I really can't fathom how anyone could have abandoned him- on top of his personality I get so many compliments on how beautiful he is, and he really is.

I love my dogs so much. The first one is my Jack Russell Terrier:

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll165/dexcsl/callsitting.jpg

Yeah, he's got a mohawk. 'cause he's a badass. My boyfriend jokes that he's my witch's familiar because he's so completely devoted. He does anything I ask of him. He's incredibly easy to train. When I'm sick, he has to be dragged from my side. When I'm in the bathroom puking after getting completely wasted, he's sitting in the bathroom with me. Callahan is my boy.

Of course, he's a complete jerk to anyone else and doesn't obey them... I show my co-workers and the kennel techs how well-trained he is then hand the treats to them and he might as well be peeing on their legs for all the attention he pays them.

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll165/dexcsl/calspar.jpg

Sparta's the big fluffy one, half Bernese Mountain Dog, half Border Collie. All retarded. She's incredibly sweet, though, and she's got that extra soft Bernese fur. She's supposed to be my boyfriend's dog. He wanted a dog devoted to him like Callahan is to me so we picked up Sparta at the kennel at seven weeks old.

I told him she'd be big so he'd better train her well or she'd have us off our feet in an instant on walks. I told him he'd have to brush her because she'd have a longer coat. HA. What did he train her to do? Rear up on her feet and box with him. Greeeeeaaat. So I trained her. I also groom her. She's my dog.

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll165/dexcsl/kirinchair.jpg

Kirin, my little pit bull. When Callahan dies (hopefully not any time soon) Kirin will be there to comfort me because she's almost as devoted as he is. She is, of course, quite a bit bigger than this now. This picture was taken soon after we got her.

She was abandoned with a littermate where I work. Some old fart drove down out of the mountains, asked us if we took dogs to sell or for adoption and, when told that we don't do that, threatened to drop the dogs off at a shelter. Pit bulls are illegal in Denver and some of the surrounding suburbs. She and her littermate would have been put down immediately. So I took one and a co-worker took another. Just seven weeks old, no shots, already looking like the pit bull she'd grow up to be.

She's pretty timid and has to be introduced to a person or place several times before she feels truly comfortable. Otherwise she just sticks to my legs. She ran from a chihuahua the other day. A chihuahua! Definitely not a fighter. But she's an exceptional foot warmer and stunning at the agility courses. From a standing start, she can jump over a four foot obstacle.

Ahem. I love my dogs a lot.

Man Found Being Eaten By His Own Lizards

Although meat is not their favorite food, seven lizards were found feasting on the corpse of their owner, Ronald Huff.

Police went to Huff's apartment after he failed to appear at work, and discovered the corpse in the process of being eaten by Monitor lizards. The cause of death has not been determined.

An expert did say the Monitor lizards "can cut you up, beat you up pretty good." One of them has been acting aggressively. Homes with zoos and educational facilities are being sought for the lizards.

God, this story even gives me the shivers:

Mark Voegel, 30, was found dead in his Dortmund, Germany apartment. His body was draped in spider webs and more than 200 spiders, several snakes, thousands of termites, and a gecko were feasting on his corpse.

Proper authorities were alerted when concerned neighbours noticed a horrendous stench eminating from the apartment.

His black widow, Bettina, is believed to have administered the deadly bite.
Voeger's apartment has been described as both a "zoo" and a "jungle" by authorities. He never let people visit.

A police spokesman said: “It was like a horror movie. His corpse was over the sofa. Giant webs draped him, spiders were all over him. They were coming out of his nose and his mouth. There was everything there one could imagine in the world of reptiles. Larger pieces of flesh torn off by the lizards were scooped up and taken back to the webs of tarantulas and other bird-eating spiders.”

The spiders and termites managed to escape when the heating elements exploded and opened the lids to their tanks.

The lizards were allowed to roam.

Voegel also kept a pet boa constricter and several poisonous frogs.
He was dead for somewhere between seven and fourteen days when his corpse was found. Enough time for the creepy-crawlies to make a new home out of his apartment.

I got this guy from the Killeen pound. After a nasty scare of him possibly having distemper(he doesn't thankfully) he's on the road to recovery. Someone lost a great dog, their loss is my gain though :) He's excellent on a leash, loves the water, is learning all kinds of agility training & various tricks & is helping teach my jrt/heeler mix how to behave better on a leash during our walks.

I named him Charlie after the dog my grandpa had when I was growing up.

This is Piper, who I had to give up for adoption about a year ago, and I still feel more remorse about it than I ever thought I could.
On the plus side, I know she was adopted again right away because, although the humane society won't tell you if you ask specifically, you can still check their website and stuff.

http://imgur.com/faTmgl.jpg

And this is Sophie, Piper's life-partner. She was my sisters dog, but she wanted to get two little paris hilton dogs, and poor Sophie was always crated or kenneled, never really got any interaction. She has hip problems and is blind in one eye. She's back at my sisters, but her youngest son is older now and very dedicated to spending time with and taking care of her, so I let her go.

I currently have no pets, but I am willing to accept applications from females about 5'5 to 5'8, weighing anywhere between 110 and 111 pounds, redheads preferred but willing to negotiate.

That's a shitty ass selfish reason not to give a home to one of the hundreds of THOUSANDS of pets sitting in shelters waiting to be euthenized.

But I didnt come to this thread to scold you. :(

....

My giant, reclusive feral cat...25 pounds, 2 and a half feet long.... for the first time ever came and got on my lap today. I was perfectly terrified: *no quick movements, no quick movements*. I just had to sit there for 15 minutes until he decided to go do something else. This is the first time he has ever initiated physical contact with me. I'm feeling rather smug with my feline socialization tactics today.
