I found that rather interesting and thinks it warrants a thread of its own for people who want to take the test and let others know the results.

My own were:

Economic Left/Right: -5.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.87

That put me almost dead center on the direct line between Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama on the international chart.

Your political compass:
Economic Left/Right: 4.25

This quiz was written by somebody in the same quadrant as the dali lama. The questions are worded in a biased manner from an economic standpoint.

The very first question: If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations.

This is not a fair question. I will of course choose to serve humanity over the well being of just a corporation. That is being neither left or right. It is simply being sane.

Word the question more properly to gauge left and right using the following:

If economic globalisation is inevitable, decisions in law making regarding globalization should be made to ultimately serve the masses, as opposed to laws that may adversely affect the masses in an attempt to prevent individualized negative impacts.

I am quite sure I would answer THAT question considerably differently.

And if you're going to word a question in a manner to induce a liberal response, such as: Many personal fortunes are made by people who simply manipulate money and contribute nothing to their society.

Which is basically inviting people to make the assessment that rich people suck, and didnt earn what they have.

Then do the same for questions that could induce a conservative response, such as rewording this question:Protectionism is sometimes necessary in trade, to something of similar effect:

" It sometimes becomes necessary, to protect jobs for your neighbors and friends, to take a protectionist stance in international trade. "

Or something similar to this question:

"Those who are able to work, and refuse the opportunity, should not expect society's support."

Change that to
"Those who are able to work and refuse to do so should not be able to expect taxpayers to support them"

Bottom Line: I am far higher than a 4.25 on an economic scale, but that was not measured because many of the questions were, in fact, written to elicit a liberal response from even the staunchest conservative. Middle of the road/slight negative seems about right for my social stances.

DeV
03-28-2004, 11:30 AM
I felt the same way about some of the questions.. but then again when you take surveys such as this you expect some type of bias.

I don't understand this logic. The supposed leftist site tells you that you are closer to the middle of the economic spectrum than you believe yourself to be.

Why wouldn't that be evidence of the opposite - it's a right wing propaganda machine?

What point would a wacko leftist test have if it validated that those people that perceive themselves as conservative are actually centrists?

Oh, I know - they actually are attempting to be neutral.

anyway, I'm glad to see someone else in the same quadrant
