Over by Danjirland, it's been around for ever but it seems somewhat anachronistic given EN is open. Does anyone remember the original story and why it's there now?

It was there when I started playing, but it has some nifty locations and service, and if you remember, tree spirit parties were some of the highest level hunting in the game at the time, so kinda made sense to have a base down there.

I still miss the AI office and the wraith hunting in the attic. I made my best friends in GS for a very long time there in Ceranis, Daeffodill and Breeze. All of em gone many years other than Daeffy whos popped in a few times, but that i know of, finally sold the char.

The NPCs around the settlement will answer various questions, from which you can sort of piece together the story:

ask surly elf about forest
The surly looking elf says, "The Red Forest... it earned that name only a hundred years ago when the entire population of the forest was slain by an onslaught of horrible beasts. You could see the blood on the trees from half a day's journey away and the stench reached even farther... The blood has long since faded, but the name remains."

ask surly elf about spirits
The surly looking elf says, "The tree spirits rise from the ruined forest nearby and wander along the trails seeking the destruction of anything that crosses their path. They are a sad legacy of darker times."

ask young elf about Sergha
The young elf says, "He is the leader of our settlement. He found this clearing when long ago we fled the forests and somehow managed to hide all signs of it well enough for us to be safe."

ask sharp-eyed elf about Sergha
The sharp-eyed elf says, "He is our leader. He got us all out of the forest before it was destroyed... I wish we could go back."

ask sharp-eyed elf about settlement
The sharp-eyed elf says, "We hope to one day find safer ground but of course we prefer to stay close to the forest, though returning there may never be possible."

ask surly elf about settlement
The surly looking elf says, "History has not been kind to my people in this forest. So for now, we choose to remain hidden from the greater forest's population." The surly looking elf narrows his eyes. "You would be wise to keep our presence here a secret."

ask surly elf about ilvari
The surly looking elf whispers, "Ilvari... mad creatures with no sense of right or wrong. Do not be fooled by their appearance or ridiculous antics. They are vicious killers who care little for what they do."

ask pherantyr about ilvari
Pherantyr says, "Oh I've never heard of them, cept for what a young trader I met mentioned in passing. Something about enchanter's light, children of fright. Mysteries... Bah!"

Talairi gave a little more information on the elves' relationship to the Ilvari:

Talairi says, "The Ilvari... there was once a settlement of elves.."
Talairi says, "They happened upon a village once.. all there had been razed except for a few helpless children.."
Talairi says, "They took pity on the poor defenceless ones.. and took them to live and care for.."
Talairi says, "Gradually.. they began to notice that unfortunate things were beginning to befall the village."
Talairi says, "The elves were falling to strange, unpredictable accidents.."
Talairi says, "Finally.. they discovered.. it was not children then had taken in. It was the Ilvari."

And the loresong for the Ilvari luck charm that Pherantyr sells tells you this:

You are suddenly travelling through a wall of dense fog. Just as the fog begins to clear, you can make out the shape of small children dancing about a forest surrounded by flame and light... and then the vision ends.

It's odd the things that can stick in your mind, I remember hunting reivers and selling their half plate armor in the village because it paid 100 silver more than in the Landing.

Tree parties were a lot of fun and I also have a lot of fond AI memories. The nice part about taking a long break for me is that outside of three people (Elminster, Rontuu, and Naina) every single person I knew I came back had already gone so I was basically able to start fresh.

Selling half-plate? They better be paying a lotta silvers for that to be worth it

I feel like grandpa here, but "back in the day" a silver used to be worth a lot more.

Nostalgia bump from a RL great-grandpa. The RtCF threads made me think of when I took less than 2k to the Mithril Juggernaut and had a blast, heck I bought a cloak with POCKETS for 800 silver!

Haha. I do remember when I was playing in '99 what a big deal it was to finally get some 4x gear on my rogue. I think he actually topped out at 15 or something before I went back to EQ. God, I miss when games were like EQ and UO. Now we're just spoiled with WoW, Aion, etc.

I think that's one of the reasons I love GS. Psinet & Lich made it playable on a sustainable level and I'm so F-ing glad. Although I do miss the hunting parties in Werebears and stuff. Had some great times with that.

In 1998 a friend and I power hunted Warfs in RR for an entire weekend and pulled out 2m silver. It was damn amazing for the time.

No, you should've loaded up on the fishbone longknives.

I don't remember what my first merchant was. I played on AOL in 1995 or so, but not very much (still hourly) and didn't know what the hell I was doing. The earliest merchant-bought item I can recall, though, was "a well-forged dwarven war helm" which I thought was the most awesome thing ever at the time. :P

I also thought I was a real BAMF when I found the polished metal gauntlets at the elven village.

Loved that merchant, I think I bought at least two of everything because it was my first merchant event with decent coins in the bank.

I wore most of it on for a day and looked like an idiot.

Stocked up on red salve for the warcats, and there was a somewhat padded full leathers (3x?) that were popular.

First merchant event I remember was the first Juggernaut, but I was so new and dumb I didn't understand the significance. I just went on my way killing rats and kobolds.

First merchant I ever found had silver lockpick cases, some other item and a 'mystery' toy. I remember running to get a note from the bank to go buy a silver lockpick case and while I was on the way back to the tent the game crashed. When it came back up the tent was gone....I was so sad.

The Juggernaut came right after I had earned my first million silvers (thank you original titans) and I spent every silver I had, including buying title gifts for my ingame brother and fiance. I got them vultite falchions, they were thrilled. LOL
I must have purchased a dozen oilskin cloaks and pocket boots!!!
