Any decent training plans for a 2 handed ranger? Anyone out there actually play a 2 handed ranger and have fun with it? Please describe your hunting style and your typical hunt...

No such thing. I do know a couple people who've played two-handed Rangers < myself trying it for a bit >, but in this time and age it would mean Two-handers AND doubling in dodge, which is very expensive for a Ranger.
Make a hunting two-hander Rogue w/MIU if that's what you really want to do.

is doubling in dodge really neccessary? With mobiles on, rangers are effectively doubling in dodge anyway...

Two-handed Ranger? Umm, yeah doubling in dodging is needed. I'm about as physical of a Ranger as it gets, and I'd still get demolished going back to two-handers.
Why take the chance to get messed up.
Well i'm a two handed ranger, and i love it, im actually abou to start building back my hiding skills since i miss that the most, but with a two hander, i wont be needing ambush. So here's my training list and the only thing missing that will be fully doubled in addition to everything else will be hiding, i'll have that maxed out in about 5 lvls or so...?
Ryku (at level 52), your current skill bonuses and ranks (including all modifiers) are:
Skill Name | Current Current
| Bonus Ranks
Armor Use..........................| 145 45
Combat Maneuvers...................| 154 54
Two-Handed Weapons.................| 208 108
Physical Fitness...................| 152 52
Dodging............................| 154 54
Harness Power......................| 152 52
Perception.........................| 50 10
Climbing...........................| 90 20
Swimming...........................| 50 10
Spell Lists
Minor Spirit.......................| 20
Spell Lists
Ranger.............................| 52
Training Points: 16 Phy 0 Mnt (402 Phy converted to Mnt)
(Use SKILLS BASE to display unmodified ranks and goals)
BTW i kill the shit out of everything 10 lvls above me and down. My DS in offensive is about 325 or so and my AS is bout the same. With all that ranger spell ranks my dodging is very good too. Just get yourself some high enchant armor and a decent two hander (either a claid or a for me right now i use a heavy tempered greataxe) and you'll be good to go.

Not bad of a plan for a two-hander. Not bad at all. You take key losses I personally wouldn't, but if it fits your schway, do it, friend.
Thanks, ya it was a bit of a change going from a one handed edged swinger with hiding and ambush and almost singling in spells to going to what i have now. Though as soon as i get my hiding back i think i'll be as happy as a clam. Though the path sure as hell isnt for everyone, id hate to see a bunch of people out there doing what i do, but if you wanna good 2hd ranger plan its pretty slick.

That's gotta be a bitch starting off, to be honest.
Also, your lack of spirit mana control scares me. My Ranger can do without mana on the hunt, but Camo Ammo makes life nice.

Hmm, looks interesting. Do you rely on spike thorn a lot on your hunts? Also, how do you handle swarms? And how the heck do you get an offensive DS of 325 with a two hander?
heh well the spike kicks major ass. I can mess up the ogres, vipers, and boars of the forest in EN pretty well, and they're like 60 or so. So its nice to have when ya need to blast something real quick. And actually its very nice to have when you need to take out some undead.
As far as spirit control goes i dont quite know what its like to have any at all. I have 168 mana right now and with camo costing only 8 and the rare occations that i use spirit strike and how fast i max it all seems to work out, though a little mana control would be nice i guess, jus seems like a bit of a waste with other things you can put point into.
And the best thing about being a ranger when it comes to swarms is the ability to just cast mass calm and you can just pick each critter off one by one if thats what you wish to do.
And with all the training in spells its not that hard to get such a high offensive DS. Make sure you train one in ranger a lvl and get up to 120 for lesser shroud and BAM you've got great DS and dogding abilities. I dont know, i love the way i am compared to the old one hander and a shield ways. But Stunseed did make a good point about it being a bitch early on. It very might well be a pain with very lttle spells but i couldnt say for sure since i migrated as a two hander at like lvl 28.

When I redid Stun, I started off doubling two-handers, and singling edged. It was a really big bitch.

How did you hunt as a 2 hander? As an OHE/ambusher i rely heavily on the DS pushdown from ambush. Do you have to wait for the critter to swing then whack him back?
Oh yes, hows your bolt DS?
Well ya i think almost all one swingers wait for the critter to attack first before swinging. So ya thats what i do, if im going up against something with a high DS in def. You could always use 117 spirit strike if ya need as well but id rather just wait. My bolt DS is about the same (round 325) and actually i think it might be a couple points higher than my normal DS in offensive.
Here's a look at my current stats though with play a pretty big part of in it all:

Personally, my bolt DS was horrid back then. However, with GS4 and EBPW, I wager it's doable.
Why were ya singling in edged Stun, if you dont mind me askin'?

Because before re-allocation Stunseed was a fucking beast with Redux. I wish I had logs, but it was very, very nice.
Hahah badass! i've never had redux but i've seen some crazy logs. But ya if i had to single in a whole nuther weapon class id be fucked too...i mean that just next to impossible in gs4.

Now, at 42 trains, Stun has about 25% redux. If I were in your shoes, I'd kill for some redux. Also, I wear crit padded hauberk, so that can help, too.
Before re-roll, it was much higher.

You should have semi-dux kicking in at 52, what do you mean you dont have it?
Stunseed
03-26-2004, 01:09 AM
Umm, he's got 20 extra spells and no shield use as secondary skills.

I figured hed have something at least...wats the point of him being 1x in Phys then?
Stunseed
03-26-2004, 01:44 AM
In time, he'll get it. Not much of it, mind you. When he's done with spells, Ryku will have it soon thereafter with how physical his Ranger is.
Well i'm not gunna stop actually when it comes to spells, im always going to have 20 extra spells on me, unless of course it gets to the point where i just cant contend without the redux, then i might start to think. But for the time being, i go for maximum DS so i dont even get toughed. But as long as i have more than one spell per train i cant have ANY redux. The 1x in physical is for stamina since i plan on using shadow mastery when it comes out and i get my hiding back, but if it isnt all that great after all i might as well scratch the 1x PT.

Come see me in about 15 trains. Here soon, they's gonna catch up to you, and getting hit will get you fucked. The question isn't IF they hit you, it's when. I helped Tazelhoffe get back on his feet after he changed to OHE from Polearm. The only Ranger I < personally > have seen off the normal is Maygog, and he's a two-weapon edged user, and he's testing out EN with it.

I have been playing around with a two handed ranger using a quarter staff. Yes I am laughed at alot. Frankly...I am having a good time with it.
She's Half-Krolvin and needs to hunt a bit lower than herself...but hey...it's fun with the trip and stance dancing.

WOW that plan looks like its gonna be really hard to train with getting older, just a personal opinion wouldn't it best to specialize in one or the other? And i have seen REALLY REALLY nice masterfully weighted staffs so there not always something to be laughed at.

I went the Ranged/Brawling route in GS4. Its pretty much a beefed up version of what i did in GS3. Ill post my stats/skills if there is interest.

The best thing is....I hardly ever get a character past level 10. No time to title and I am a neurotic reroller. Too cheap to pay for extra character slots.

LOL wow i've always been about discipline in working with my characters, i understand that younger characters starting out can be fun, but frustrating and boring at times as well...but as long as your happy thats all that matters!
