Facebook is a place to "connect and share" more than pictures
Social networking websites have become very popular over the last few years, especially amongst young adults. While most people use these sites to keep in touch, some people are using them to meet new partners for casual sexual encounters.
Professor Peter Kelly, the Director of Public Health in Teesside, United Kingdom, has claimed that his staff have found a link between social networking sites (http://www.dailytech.com/DoD+Loosens+Social+Networking+Laws+but+USMC+Holds+ Strong/article17938.htm) and the spread of the Syphilis bacteria, especially among young women.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause heart, brain, and bone damage if left untreated. In some cases these effects can be fatal, but many carriers of the bacterium are unaware that they have been infected.
“Syphilis is a devastating disease. Anyone who has unprotected sex with casual partners is at high risk," stated Kelly. "There has been a fourfold increase in the number of syphilis cases detected with more young women being affected.
Syphilis has increased fourfold in Durham, Sunderland, and Teesside, the areas of Britain where Facebook (http://www.dailytech.com/DOD+Allows+US+Military+Personnel+Pentagon+to+Use+F acebook/article17796.htm) is most popular.
"I don't get the names of people affected, just figures, and I saw that several of the people had met sexual partners through these sites,” said Kelly. "Social networking sites are making it easier for people to meet up for casual sex."
Facebook (http://www.dailytech.com/Facebook+Blackmailer+Gets+15+Years+in+Prison+for+A busing+Male+Students/article17791.htm) was quick to respond with the following statement: “The assertion that Facebook is responsible for the transmission of syphilis is ridiculous. Facebook is no more responsible (http://www.dailytech.com/Facebook+Changes+Privacy+Settings/article17091.htm) for STD transmission than newspapers responsible for bad vision. Today’s reports exaggerate the comments made by the professor, and ignore the difference between correlation and causation".
"As Facebook’s more than 400 million user (http://www.dailytech.com/Facebook+CEO+Claims+People+No+Longer+Have+Same+Pri vacy+Expectations/article17367.htm)s know, our website is not a place to meet people for casual sex, it’s a place for friends, family and co-workers to connect and share.”
Facebook has approximately 23 million members in Britain.
DT writing is fucking terrible but I found this rather funny.
