Anyone else an audiobook fan? I really like them for the Metro to work and occasionally for putting myself to sleep (I did finally get through Too Big to Fail that way) but I'm not sure if I should maintain my membership to Audible.com.

Right now it is $8 a month for two more months, then it goes up to $15 a month. I get one free audiobook per month and a free audio subscription to the NYT and WSJ weekday versions, then I get minor discounts on other audiobooks which run about 1.5x the cost of a paperback and take about 3 months before they come out after a book is published.

Anyone else have a site that has reliably good audiobooks? I'd rather download them than get CDs, but I'm willing to go with CDs if they are cheaper. No pirated stuff, I'm trying to support the economy here.

The no piracy clause kills my suggestion. So many audiobooks.

Before I even got to your piracy comment I wondered how the economics of audiobooks work, is there a kickback to the book author/publisher? Can I just buy a book, read it outloud into a microphone, and sell that tape?

That would be a huge violation of the intellectual property copyright. Books aren't the same as music in the sense that you can reproduce them using your own talent.

My step mother is "legally" blind whatever that means (she can't see shit under her nose... I've walked by her on the sidewalk and she's just smiled and said good afternoon not knowing it's me) and does audio books from the library.

And the library has a shitfuck of them to pick from.
