Question,

Is there a way to ensure you curse an item and take it to -5 or -10?

I have in the past by accidentally by casting Enchant Item before the temper was completed.

Now I want to take an imflass weapon to 0x so it doesn't have that annoying +12 and I can take it to +25 not +22

I've attempted casting Enchant Item right after tempering it.. but it isn't cursing...

Any suggestions? Has anyone else tried this?

I'd just do the opposite of what is recommended in this list:

I believe once a weapon has been cursed by a failed enchant it can no longer be enchanted. At least it was that way in the old GS3 system.

I don't know if that's true. I got a maul a couple of months ago which was made of rolaren, described as "a blackened maul", but had been enchanted to 4x (and retained its superior forging) after a failed enchant.

I took a cursed/blackened runestaff back to 4x last year.

You could try being encumbered and/or injured to get the curse.

Hold 100k in coins.

200k if you're not a hobbit

As others have suggested, I dont think the penalties for encumbrance has a cap, or if it does, it is a sizable one. With 202 ranks of Arcane Symbols I can completely botch a cast off of a scroll with enough weight. I'm sure you could do the same with enchanting. Just make sure if you use coins you have someone on hand to resurrect you. If you use Depart Confirm (or even if you rot, I think) you lose all your coins.

You lose your coins if you rot.

What makes you think it just won't go to -3?

If you're a good enough enchanter, it's basically impossible to fail a minor enchant that badly. I know Raggler was trying to blacken a suit of imflass full plate for a long time and just could not manage a major failure to save his life, even with like 500k in silver. You just have to hope for the 3%, I think.

What i'm wondering if it will still count towards the limit of a 7x enchant to build it back up. Lets say you knock a 5x enchant down to a 4x. Can it still be enchanted 3 more times for a true 7x, or could you only get it at 6x because of the failed enchant?

I knocked my 9lb fullplate to -2x and was able to enchant it back to 7x fine with just mage enchanting.

I'm fairly sure I've seen stuff get knocked back on purpose before.

Maybe they fixed it? But I know I saw atleast a few imflass and invar weapons done a few years back that were full +20 because of this.

I'll have to let you all know if I manage to suceed. It is a little scary though.. playing games with a 5mil silver weapon.

I know this is a really old thread but Stry did you have any luck with this? A friend did it accidentally to a set of imflass chainmail a few months ago and it is really nice that it is now +25 instead of +22 and I am working on on a superior lance that I would like to get to true 7X.

you can guarantee a failure by simply casting before the tempering is set...what happens from that failure is not assured.

I believe this is still accurate. supposedly losing enchants lowers max potential enchant. however, max enchant is still 10x. so if youve failed it twice like the poster on page 1 (sorry, tablet typing), then the max enchant will be 8x. this may only be if you knock it below 0x... but not sure
