I'm not entirely sure what the deal is with this guy to be honest, but those are the specs he e-mailed me after a fairly shady (private number) reply to a craigslist ad I posted.
Note: I don't mean free... it's not free.

Probably stolen and being fenced through CL.
He didn't tell you how much he wanted for it is a heads up to that effect. Any dipshit with a notebook like that knows what they want for it.

Actually, he did tell me. He offered to trade it for my PS3 (I have a post to sell my copy of Dragon Age, and he took my number away from that... odd), which on its own seemed shady enough to steer me away. Really though, if I can ensure everything is fine with the deal, why the heck not?
Assuming it's not some oldish specced crap laptop (though I honestly wouldn't know as I'm worthless with hardware anyway), I'm probably just going to shrug it off and ignore the guy.

From the specs you listed it's high end.
Something isn't kosher.

That is all the latest technology (minus an SSD) in mobile computing. That laptop is easily at least $1200 new.
looks like someone went to alienware and checked all the higest price boxes on the m17x
i just went through most of the specs and was sitting at like $5700 or something...

Just going to assume it's stolen, or the guy is hoping to scam via false theft report.
He *67'ed his number when calling me about it, though he did e-mail me from a legit address. Odd stuff either way.

In retrospect, having one of the punchlines in the book be the terrible, permanent mutilation of children is kind of strange.

I got $4,803 when running the numbers for an M17x. Memory was the only thing that wasn't maxed out and the McAfee software is somehow a different version.

The i7 processor is Intel's high end latest and probably worth the cost of the PlayStation alone.

Well... if anyone feels secure enough in their own well being and ability to retrieve their possessions, by all means hit me with a PM and I can hook you up with the guy (via e-mail).
I don't have nearly enough connections to be pulling shady crap like this.

Is this a local trade or an over the mail trade?

I have an M17x, It's a great system, other than the fact that in the month I've owned it, it's been in my possession for three days, the M17x is HIGHLY prone to multiple system failures, and you will probably spend more than it is worth if the warranty is voided in any way/shape/form. Will turn on but the monitor will fail, will turn on and then you will get the message "Cannot find OS.", and such and such, this is probably one with one of these failures, not to mention the audio stutters constantly, due to a problem with the sound card. Basicly, it's a dell. And Dell's suck. So the deal is probably legit, the system is probably just fucked up and not covered by warranty.

Good point. Alienware warranties are non transferable. They have also had a lot of hardware issues since being bought by Dell. (I just picked a M11x up. No issues so far...keeping fingers crossed)

Yeah, Alienware made great systems until Dell bought them out, I mean, the systems are still great spec-wise, it's just the way Dell installs them, I have never once bought a Dell system that I have not had to return at least once, and usually multiple times. I went out and bought a cheap Toshiba laptop about a year back, and it hasn't failed me yet, unlike the M17x, which I've had to return twice in the span of a month. Hands down, if you want to buy a performance laptop/PC, buy a Voodoo, they are GREAT, look great, run great, and are reliable because they are made by HP, rather than Dell, the only issues I ran into with my Voodoo laptop was that it ran a little hot, as most HP system do, but that was easily solved with a $30 cooling pad from Logitech. Sadly, after two years of going strong, I needed a new laptop (It fell off of Niagara falls with my I-phone...), and made the mistake of buying an Alienware.

Dell's quality just leaves a lot to be desired. I've had to return mine twice in the last 6 months because of technical issues. I'd probably die if my laptop and phone fell off of Niagara Falls though. That had to suck. I felt bad enough when I dropped my digital camera off one of the steeper cliffs at the Grand Canyon.
Personally, I'd stay away from anything Dell makes.

I pretty much did die, heh, since going over Niagara falls in a barrel's on my bucket list, I thought that jumping might not be such a bad idea, Good thing I didn't, heh.
