Lich Chat Channels?

I've heard rumblings about Lich getting chat channels on and off for a while. Any news on how close they are to going live? A group of friends and I use Psinet chats to keep in touch, and it might make my job easier to get them to come to Lich if we had channels here, too.

Made the switch a little earlier today. People are slowly moving over to the new chat server. Right now, only I can create channels. I'm debating whether I want to go through with allowing every character to create and moderate one channel as previously planned. 1398 different characters have connected to Lich, and the channel list could get out of control pretty quickly.

Lots of groups of friends like to have their own private channels. On top of that people like to tune to a channel for their town. Back when I used Lich I tuned to "GS Focus" "Icemule" and "Drew". Probably what I would do is have only you create public channels and everyone else can create private ones that don't show up on the list.

That'd be perfect for what I'd like to see. Just the news of Lich getting chat channels was enough for one of my friends to make the jump to Lich (she kept Psinet for the group chat). So far she seems very happy to have switched over. If we had private, personal Lich channels, I could probably get more to make the switch.

How private do the channels need to be? I was thinking about letting some channels be password protected, but would it be enough just to not have the channel name show up in the channel list?

I'd say my group probably would prefer the private channel, though having the option to choose would be a good thing. It'd depend upon taste and what people need.

Personally just unadvertised would be fine with me. Especially if the channel creator had some sort of mod privileges.

I think I came up with a solution. Every character will be able to create one channel. ";channels" will show the 15 most populated channels. ";channels full" will show all of them. When you create the channel, you'll have the option of having it hidden or private or both. Hidden will just mean it's not listed in ";channels" or ";channels full". Private will mean everyone is banned by default. The owner, or anyone the owner assigns as a moderator, will have to unban anyone they want to let in, and they'll have to have a password protected login to tune to the channel. It's in the works now.

I'm apparently running an older vrs of Lnet? It says I need to update. But when I run the updater, it says everything is up to date.

Granted, I downloaded Lich today and am still learning. Am I missing something?
