View Full Version : So I'm buying a new phone

My choices are:
HTC Pure
or an
Iphone
Both look good, but this will be my first phone with internet and apps. I don't text but I do want a phone that plays music.
This way I don't have to carry around a phone and a mp3 player.
Any advice would be good.

Iphone
3GS has up to 32G of available memory depending on which one you order.
The only thing that sucks about Iphone is Itunes. :(

Tech person there telling you to go with the iPhone. The HTC doesn't have a standard headphone jack, you can see her fiddling with that weird adapter in the video.

I absolutely love my iPhone. It was very easy to figure out, it has the most apps and it's popularity makes it easy to ask others for help. iTunes does suck though, no question there. The phone is not without it's issues but any phone will be like that. The speakerphone is not very loud even at the highest volume, the touch keyboard can be harder to use for people with bigger fingers (definitely not an issue I run into though) and there are some sound aspects that I wish I could personalize. There are thousands of apps which on the one hand is nice but on the other you sometimes have to dig to find the best app for a particular need.
Good advice, but I'm waiting on some of the tech folks to answer my query.
Who qualifies as a 'tech person'?

Everyone here knows I'm biased but HTC is my favorite phone manufacturer and I hope Apple burns to the ground.

I love and hate iTunes.
I love that I can use the addon Shazam to figure out what a song is and a few moments later, have that song in my library.
I hate that it's a fucking little bitch to configure and you have to do everything perfectly in order for it to work the way you want it to.

I love my iPhone and I don't even mind iTunes so much. I just hate the fracking battery life. No experience with an HTC so I can't compare.

I like my Droid. I can root it if I want to. I can buy apps, with out Apple telling me what I can and cannot buy. I can play NES, SNES, and other emulators with out using a touch screen keyboard. I can download different browsers, sms/mms interface, and other things that I haven't messed with yet. The speaker on it isn't to bad, the sd card can be changed out, comes with 16gb by default. Can read up a lot more on pros and cons at droidforums.net if you want. A lot of the stuff people read on gadget sites about the droid is a few weeks behind the stuff that's posted on that forums. Sure, it doesn't have as many apps/games as Apple, but the iPhone has been out longer, but I haven't seen anything on the iPhone that I can not do on my droid that makes me go omg I want that!...
Oh yeah, another thing you have to consider is the coverage in your area. You might want to ask people you know that have different phones and providers how the coverage is.

I love my iPhone and am mad at myself that I kept my old crappy phone as long as I did. I wanted to combine my MP3 player with my phone too and the iPhone is great for that. iTunes is a bit of a pain to deal with but it's a small inconvenience compared to everything you get with an iPhone.
The main thing to consider is how good AT&T coverage is in your area. Here in the DC area its great but when I travel sometimes I get lousy signals.

The iPhone 3G battery life can suck, but only if you leave all the bells and whistles running constantly. Turn off bluetooth, wireless, location info, push email, and the 3G network unless you're using them. My battery went from 24hrs to 4 days when I did that.

I just leave mine plugged in all day while I'm listening to music at work and that works for me. But yeah if I go somewhere for the weekend I disable all the extra crap.
If you get an iPhone, get some real headphones ASAP. The ones that come with the iPhone suck. These aren't bad for $30: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+Ear+Bud+Headphones/8964864.p?id=1218008398563&skuId=8964864&st=earbud&cp=1&lp=7 They don't include the phone functionality though.
Also get a case, I prefer the ones from incase: http://www.goincase.com/products/category/iPhone+3GS+and+3G

I'm using the HTC nexus one and although it's fucking great if you care about getting music/podcasts etc on and off your phone easily I'd say iPhone is the way to go. The only shit part about that is that a new iPhone will come out this summer and make you jealous.
I put my Iphone on the charger at night and have it plugged into my work computer during the day (playing music as well) thus I have no issues with battery life. ;)

Thanks for the headphone recommendation. Mine just died and I dreaded buying new earbuds, since they (understandably) don't let you test them before you buy.

Uh, yeah. I keep the stuff turned off but I like playing games and the battery life is like 3 hours while gaming. I would keep it plugged in but in the airport, available plugs are scarce and no plugs on the planes yet.
Flying back and forth between NJ and OH, the AT&T coverage has been pretty good. I've only hit problems in specific buildings, oddly enough.

I love WebOS, but I wish they would have built the physical hardware with slightly better quality. Mine has survived rough everyday use with only a clear skin though, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

T-Mobile has some great phones and I love their pricing, but their network is a joke in my area (St. Louis). No 3G plans for us at all in 2010.

Personally I'm torn...
My company will pretty much get me any phone I want, but it has to be on Verizon or AT&T.
Do I get a Verizon Droid, an iPhone, or wait for Verizon Nexus One.
I've so far been waiting to make my decision, but also giving the Nexus One a bit of time to give me a more solid date (is currently slated for 'spring 2010').
In terms of want, I really want the Nexus One (Google can do no wrong after all LOL). I want to avoid Apple on general principle. If the Droid had more of a sleek look, I probably would have had an easier decision.

Lots of blogs around the web peg 3/23 as the release date of the Verizon Nexus One.
If you know what you’re getting into (i.e. NOT an iPhone) you’re going to fucking love the N1, I would definitely recommend it over the Droid at least, which has about half the horsepower and is running on an older Android OS (and may actually already be obsolete—as it’s said it can’t run Google Earth and some of the live wallpapers that the N1 is running now).

If you know what you’re getting into (i.e. NOT an iPhone)
This is the key. I was all anti-Apple and AT&T last year but after playing around with my my friends' iPhones and trying out the ones at the AppleStore, I just couldn't see how a G1 (at the time) or Pre came close from an ease of use and fun factor standpoint. It's possible there are lots of cool apps for the Droid and other new phones now, but back then it wasn't even close, even if the technology itself was more advanced in the other phones.
The main thing I would change on my iPhone is to add a flash. The ability to disable the horizonal/vertical auto-alignment would be nice too but I'll get over it. The battery issue has been mentioned already.

I know it's about the iPad but the points are just as relevant for the iPhone. On the phone front I'm interested in seeing the X10, if it's nice I may switch from Verizon to AT&T.

Since when is this a political thread? I feel like this thread has been fairly pro-Apple so far as well... Do you even read threads before you post?

I don't know what service you're using...but here's what I do. Cheapest cell phone you can find, using it just as a phone. Then get either get a netbook or laptop card. A good netbook owns any phone.
