Ha? How do you figure that I am guilty of criticizing people for their taste? I have no problem with Drew not liking runes, Fallen not liking profession titles and Warriorbird not liking bulges. They are welcome to their opinions and more power to them. If they want they can go post all about them in a thread entitled "words that I don't like." However, this thread is roughly titled as words that should NEVER be used in alters. That title implies not only that the posters do not like these words, but also that other people should not like them either. The serious posters in this thread not only state their particular preferences in alters, but also try to impose those preferences on the rest of the community. That is where my problem lies.

This one is more touchy, some people would have no problem with Champagne but Turkish delight would be a problem. Or wouldn't like a cuban sandwich but wouldn't mind a fez. They're all named after towns or countries, but this one is harder.

I'm guilty of it to an extent, mostly because I like to have variety in my items and not just repeat the same term over and over. I also like to play with words for specific images, such as pairing blood agate with sanguine (color related to blood) eahnor.
I'd have to disagree on marbrinus and bourde, though. They're given in the costume docs as being associated with certain races (marbrinus with the elves and bourde with the dark elves), so it'd make sense for them to get used, especially by people from those races. The same goes for chainsil and sylvans, cordetum and dwarves and cameline and halflings.
For the record, marbrinus is a type of marbled silk and bourde is a type of striped silk. Chainsil is very fine linen while cordetum is a coarse cloth (type not specified) and cameline is a very fine wool. All of them are also real fabrics.

I know they are a real fabric and colors. What I'm saying though is that when I "look" at you in game and I can't tell what color something is by reading it then it annoys me. And I think it detracts from the item itself when someone else has to struggle to visualize it.

I can understand that. I've started moving away from using obscure words in my own alters and playing with the design itself. It just takes a while to find the balance, and I still have things I've made before that I love but use those terms. These days when I use obscure wording, it's very much on purpose to create a specific effect, not to show off or whatever.
Yeah, it's nice to have something described exactly how you see it, but if no one else knows what you're talking about, you're often really just playing with yourself.

They probably would get it, true. But as much as I love them, they're not the reason I play. For a time I did try to run with the fashionista group, but now I'm just designing stuff I'll like. There are other people in the game, and I'd like them to get an idea of what my characters look like, too.

THEY ARE STEALING OUR THOUGHTS!!!!!!(well, Tisket's thoughts)
IOI: 5
Have you ever wondered what a chatelaine is? Run into someone wearing something tenebrous? Want to know why there's so much interest in ferronieres? Do you ever feel like any character in The Muppet Movie?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, then boy have we got something for you! If you answered no to all of them, well, we've got the same thing for you, too. If you can't read, you're out of luck. You probably aren't having much fun playing this game, either. Or reading this announcement, come to think of it.
An in-game dictionary, that's what we've got for you! And it has all of two entries! So if you want a definition for "chatelaine" or "ferroniere", we've got you covered.
Oh, you were curious about tenebrous too, you say? Well, that's where your friends come in. We were positive we could never keep up with all the crazy words the linguistic archeologists out there manage to dig up, so instead of writing everything ourselves, we're opening the dictionary up for submissions. If you have a word you really like, or you see something you don't understand and end up looking it up, just submit a definition and we might include it.
All of these new features are accessed through the DEFINE verb. We hope you enjoy them, and we look forward to your submissions.

So then you're comfortable with a peace axe? What makes a claidhmore a war claidhmore? Why is a warsword a war sword?
War claidhmore and warsword are stupid because they both are implements of war. My point is that an axe is a tool just like a hammer so I'm ok if you delineate that you are holding the version built for battle. Swords are only used for battle so the war is entirely redundant. Cloaks can't be made in a "war only" version, so that is also foolish. But the difference between a regular hammer and a war hammer is significant so I don't have a problem with that. The difference between a sword and a war sword is nothing.

Awarded as third prize in Paupers' 2008 Low Fashion Show (look for another one later this year, hopefully). The other two were good, but this one was my favorite.
A fur-trimmed eel-skin badge
This badge is made of the glossy skin of an eel and trimmed all around with an unknown animal’s mangy fur. The image of wounded warrior riding a charging griffon past an angry-looking sorceress on a distant peak under a full moon silhouetting a soaring bird of prey is tooled upon its surface. Stamped beneath the scene are the words, “Trying Too Hard--House of Paupers’ Low Fashion Show--5108.”
I think meticulous descriptions of rockin' scenes should make their way into more alters, personally.

[Town Square, West]
Ahead of you, in the midst of the square, stretches the cobblestoned main bazaar, its serpentine lanes abuzz with traders hawking their wares, bartering, and bickering. The freewheeling vendors in the bazaar provide a welcome alternative to the stylish and expensive merchants whose shops border the square. Before you is the gilded but peeling wood facade of the First Elanith Secure Bank. You also see the Shadowryne disk, a shaggy mutt, a small bird, a badly damaged brass strongbox, a corroded brass trunk and a dried out blueberry cupcake.
Also here: Lord Domitius, Johagn, Czurke, Parro who is lying down, Kyrsche, Omalisp who is kneeling, Lady Daphnine, Raffiky

I need a description! He looked like a mega-magician. All these tacky magician alters.

Huh. I wonder if my halfling's hair is viewed as a "bad alter". I did not even design it, the GM doing the feature alters did.
You see Carblin the Fighter.
He appears to be a Paradis Halfling.
He is short and appears to be young. He has bright hazel eyes and freckled skin. He has short, curly copper red hair neatly styled save for a few stray curls that peek from behind his ears. He has a plump face and a freckled nose.
Why would that be a bad alter? It looks just fine to me.
Edited to add that it would be bad if it were something like: He has short, sun-kissed copper red hair cascading in neatly styled corkscrew ringlets save for a few adorably tousled strands that peek from behind his petite ears.

Because I'm the first to admit I'm HORRIBLE at alterations. I normally hand the item I want altered to the merchant, whisper them a lil bit about Carblin and let them design something. Every alter Carblin has is designed by a GM.
You are wearing a cobalt blue leather greatcloak with a plush leopard fur-lined hood (alter), a tin-bound ceramic Adventurer's Guild badge, an autumn-hued scuffed leather harness trimmed with copper studs(alter), some etched vaalorn double chain, a leather survival kit, a silver-edged sable fur sporran, and a dove grey and cobalt tartan greatkilt.
