Awesomesauce. It'll start airing next Spring.

If you've not read the books, you don't know what you're missing (assuming you like intelligent fantasy novels written for adults and not tweens).

GRRM's propensity to have his character's realistically not always make it out of life and death situations is precisely one of the features that makes his book so good.

When you pick up something derivative and read about the young farm boy finding a dragon or whatever, you know the boy will live, and you know that whatever his mission, he'll finish it. He'll also probably find a hot chick along the way.

With George... well... you don't know that the boy will live, in fact, he might just have his balls cut off and his face eaten by a tiger.

That matters because when the boy is cowering naked in a cage with a tiger you actually worry for his safety, because you know it is truly in jeopardy in a way that wouldn't be true for other fantasy novels.

Now George R.R. Martin has to finish the series. Perhaps this will motivate him to try to release the fourth book so that he can coincide it hitting the shelves with the series airing.

I love how his fantasy world starts out with so little magic, but then, ever so slowly, he incorporates it into the world. I like his writing style more than Tolkien. Martin's character development is unsurpassed.

LOL saying everyone is dead is not a spoiler. Obviously I don't mean everyone. And you have no idea who I mean...And you'll realize quickly that GRRM kills off characters more than other authors. So yeah..relax.

Haha, I wasn't really all that serious. I have no plan to read the series as of yet, so it doesn't really matter to me (though if this thread is any indication, I might have to at some point). It was an excellent opportunity to call someone an asshat that I took advantage of, is all.

He kills off main characters like Stephen King does.

GRRM is one of my favorite authors. :)

I was thinking there is NO WAY GRRM would leave the series dangling into infinity... and then I read his Dreamsong collection of short stories. The man has never finished anything in his life. I am astounded he's gotten this far with a Song of Ice and Fire.

I loved it initially, but I've started to get bored with this series. The whole plotline with the girl in the desert seemed like an excuse for a dirty old man to write kiddy porn.

She's going to be 18 in the series so as not to offend anyone. They've also aged up pretty much all the children characters a few years.

If you read far enough along, you can begin to envision how Daenerys's(sp?) role becomes relevent to everyone else.

Spoiler: One of the ways for instance is that she's Jon Snow's half-sister.

I've read it all so far, I just had trouble getting by it initially because it was just far too creepy. That specific storyline just moved too slow for me at the time. I felt the kiddie porn scenes were just gratuitous and not particularly relevant to the overall plot.

It's still a pretty good read overall, but it needs to get wrapped up soon.

See, I think they were integral to the plot.

The fact that the girl ends up on top, as well as other details (without spoiling too much) shows that the girl was embracing her new life and her sexuality. It is a power thing. It shows that she is not without power in her relationship. Which, of course, sets the course for the development of that character throughout the later books.

It makes her later development as a strong female leader more believable. And her character change from being meek to being commanding happens, literally, in that scene.

It is, of course, no worse than what you might have seen on the small screen in HBO shows like The Sopranos, or especially Rome (in which Octavius screws his sister, peeps on his mom, who encourages him to fellate Caesar, etc etc).

Which, of course, makes HBO the prime location for such subject matter.

Also consider the reason why HBO tends to win awards with everything they produce. It is because they can show a more realistic character portrayal because they can show almost anything without having to worry about a network censor.

Showing the dark side of human nature is only showing the truth, and including it makes the media, quite frankly, better, be it a book, a movie, or a TV show.

I of course wouldn't recommend the books or the TV show to a 12 year old. They are definitely written for adults.

Glad you figured that out too ;)

My personal theory is they'll encounter each other then either fuck or kill one or the other. Then find out the truth.

It'll probably be both.

Drew
03-03-2010, 06:55 PM
Yeah I think they have a kid (which may be further complicated because my guess is Jon also had a child with Ygritte).

crb
03-03-2010, 07:34 PM
If they are related (I assume you mean J being the son of L and R), and yes I know that is the popular theory, it wouldn't actually be abnormal for them to marry, because their family did it traditionally.

I could see them having this nice happy ending ruling the seven kingdoms together, until Arya the sociopathic assassin decends and kills Dany because somehow she made the list.

I could also see Arya killing Sansa. Maybe Littlefinger's brilliant plot works and Sansa goes north, but then Arya finds out her role in you know who's death and...

Of course you still got to figure out what Bran is doing, what is happening in Dorne, fucking Iron Islands, Stannis. Lots of threads running right now.

I read the first two/part of 3rd and wasn't a huge fan... I'm more into books where there is fantasy aka. Elves, Dwarves, Wizards, Intense Sword fighting, Powers with a good counter balance of what you can and cannot do.

I love the deep well thought out plot and the battle for the throne. I just feel it wasn't a true fantasy book, more so historic fiction.

If they had of added a little more fantasy to the novel it would have had me hooked because the only thing that kept me reading was how well thought out the plot was. I loved having to think about moves characters should make.

Who are we talking about here. I can't decide if you are making a joke with the word fantasy.

How can it be too fantasy when the novel is virtually absent of anything that would classify it as fantasy.

Maybe I missed parts of the book. I eventually started to do what I usually do with books that don't catch my interest, especially with books who character switch. I skip pages and descriptive things and I sometimes just skip characters I don't like in general.

Fantasy to me is something that can't be real in our world. A weird environment eh. Magical undead things in the first chapter, yes. I say virtually because that is an exception to basically the whole book.I know there are magic things within the book but they are so minuscule that I feel like without them the book would be the same. I'd like something magical to have a meaning.

Fantasy: Something that takes place in another world that is not or could not be earth.

Science Fiction: Something that takes place either in a future reality or an alternate reality of the earth human civilization.

Star Trek is science fiction, Star Wars, is technically, fantasy.

A world that has magic, dragons, ice zombies, and summers that last for 10 years, is definitely fantasy.

It is understated though. It isn't like RA Salvatore novel where every character has some 10x sword of doom with plasma flares, or an elemental bow, or whatever.

In many ways it is like Tolkien. Gandalf waltzed around confident in the knowledge that he was badass, but he didn't exactly make a habit of tossing fireballs around. Granted Tolkien was heavy on elves and dwarves, magically though, very understated.

In anycase, these books are more about the people than about their world. If you want a really complex magic system read Wheel of Time. Of course you'll have to deal with the glacial pace and annoying characters, and frequent convenient deus ex machina.

GRRM might write slowly, but his books move the action forward when they're finally released.

Different books have different things. Tolkien's books defined the genre, but are also a great example of the standard struggle between good and evil archetypes. The Wheel of Time has a really well defined and complex magic system

A Song of Ice and Fire has the best characters. Gritty, real, multidimensional. The good guys aren't all princes, the bad guys don't all wear black hats. Everything is beautiful ambiguity.

I loved the Tudors for the drama, the costumes and the character development despite how historically inaccurate it was.

I have loved these books for the detail they include in them, it reminded me a lot of GS because I was reading them after I stopped playing. I'm super excited to see how the beauty and ugliness of the world makes it onto camera. Less excited about the plot which wrecked me in the middle of the third book. ;_; STUPID RED WEDDING
