HOw can you tell if an item is a defender item?

I just bought a runestaff that is supposedly 3x/2x defender but am thinking it is only 3x/1x is there a certain way you can tell?

Try the AI Crystal? If I'm not mistaken the total bonus should add up to the color of light. 3x/2x = blue, 3x/1x = green. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I wont pretend to know how runestaves really work .. but can't you just get a cheap 3x runestaff and compare your DS to see if you are getting an extra 1 or 2x?

i would try the ai but it is a long way away, and i have tried with no rune and with the rune but cant tell a thing......

You're wrong. I'm not sure on what enchant shows up, but I think it's the AS enchant, and then there's a tone for defender weapon.

test it out with a normal 3X staff, make sure the person swinging at you has a blade, brawling DS with runestaves are a bit different.

Maybe a bard? I don't know how those songs of theirs work so maybe not.

What Tijay said, buy a 3x one from shop have someone swing at you test both. Also make sure you're in offense when they're swinging at you.
